All of the guitarists I ever played with had an effects pedal, usually several. They would spend hours with them, setting and tweaking then resetting, retweaking, rinse and repeat... 2349735475 times! To their credit, I realize how important it is to get the right sound, as well as how long it takes to achieve that sound - that is the point in having the pedals in the first place, right!? To save that sound scheme it took hours to get just right.
I do not know much about the brands nor even the features for which one should be looking but I know that eden effects is considered one of the best. Check out the link!
