Nightwish Keyboardist REALLY Digs Scrooge McDuck

The A/V Club reported that Nightwish's keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen, has based his forthcoming solo album on Don Rosa's graphic novel, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. The first track has already been released and is included below. Holopainen discusses the origin of the high concept album in this video.

On the surface, this does sound like a silly idea but apparently, the story, a dramedy originally told in the ongoing series, is quite deep. In fact, it won Rosa the Will Eisner Award the year of its release. Metal also has a long-standing tradition of basing songs and albums on Sci-Fi/Fantasy books and characters, including comic books. Anthrax' "I am the Law" is based on Judge Dredd. They also did several songs based on Stephen King novels and stories, two of which appear on the same album as "I am the Law." The Ramones famously covered the theme song to the 1966 Spider-Man cartoon. Iron Maiden did epic songs about Dune, the Sci-Fi/Horror movie Children of the Damned, and more.

Rosa quit comics in 2012 due to health problems and the fact that the comics industry pays no royalties.
