Last Surviving Silent Film Pianist Passes at 96

96-year old Bob Mitchell was the last surviving silent film accompanist, but that job actually lasted just four, short years - from the time he was 12 to age 16 - the musical legacy he left throughout the rest of his life remained intertwined with the silver screen, and touched lives all over the world.

Bob Mitchell began playing the organ for silent films in 1924, but quit in 1928, when talkies began taking over. He is credited with reviving the art of silent film organ accompaniment in 1992 at Los Angeles' Silent Film Theater and this time, he kept the job all the way up to this summer - he gave his last performance at the Silent Film Theater in May.

Along the way, he started a little choir at Los Angeles' St. Brendan's Catholic Church, where he worked as an organist from 1934 to 2000. That little choir began appearing in films two years later. The Robert Mitchell Boys Choir sang Ave Maria with Bing Crosby in 1944's Best Picture Oscar Winner, Going My Way, and a 1941 documentary on the choir, Forty Boys and a Song, was nominated for an Academy Award. They eventually appeared in some 100 movies.

Mitchell was born in 1912 and learned accompaniment by playing the organ at church services. In 1932, he won a scholarship to the Eastman School of music. Over the years, he continued to work in the church, even while holding down jobs in bars, speakeasies, and the movies (which his mother found "vulgar"). He served as musical director for many churches in and around the Hollywood and Los Angeles areas, and when Dodgers' Stadium opened in 1962, Bob Mitchell was the one playing the organ. He kept that job for only four years. But by this point, Bob Mitchell was an institution - a true, living, local (to L.A.) legend.

Mitchell was renowned as a true artist and even called a "genius" by some, and collected many prestigious awards throughout his career in recognition. His silent film accompaniment performances were widely critically-acclaimed. Mitchell always played published music - a point of which he was proud - he did not "make it up" on the fly, as many silent film accompanists were known to do. Of course, by 1992, silent accompaniment was an art form, not a day job - and, again, an art form Mitchell is credited for pioneering.

A consummate professional, Bob hated missing a performance. One close friend said he tried sneaking out of the hospital to perform at the theater shortly before his death. Bob Mitchell passed away fittingly on the 4th of July.

A Florida woman by the name of Rosa Rio is now the only "original" silent film accompanist (that is, one who actually worked during the silent film era) alive. She still performs regularly at the Tampa Theater. She is 106.

Beckinsale Wins Barbarella Libel Suit

Kate Beckinsale has been awarded some $40k in damages stemming from a libel suit she brought against Express Newspapers. The Daily Express ran an "entirely false" story which said Beckinsale had been dropped from a remake of the classic sci-fi/fantasy movie, Barbarella. Her lawyer said the story caused her "considerable embarrassment," as it suggested her career was "in decline." The story, which was also carried online, contained a line which read:

[The Barbarella remake is] expected to be a big commercial hit so it will be a real blow to Kate

In fact, not only did Mrs. Beckinsale not lose the role to Barbarella star and Charmed alum, Rose McGowan, she was never even considered for the film! Beckinsale was never in talks to appear in the film in any capacity.

The paper offered its sincerest apologies and the editor said they were "happy" to pay damages and court costs for their error.

Kate Beckinsale is fine as fuck, though she's just as married as hell.

What?

Harry Potter Stars All Wet at Premiere

The Harry Potter stars and fans alike got soaked by torrential rains at the Leicester Square premiere of the latest installment in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - the BBC pronounced it "Harry Potter and the Half-Flood Prince." However, the premiere went over quite well, and both stars and fans remained excited, despite the downpour.

While author, JK Rowling, signed autographs in the rain, the stars wore white ribbons in remembrance of fallen co-star, Rob Knox (Marcus Belby), who was stabbed to death outside a pub just over a year ago. Another co-star, Jamie Waylett (Vincent Crabbe), will stand accused of growing marijuana one day after the film's release (July 16th). One was even mentioned in conjunction with a New Zealand burglary! But it isn't as though the cast is "cursed," the way some movies and casts are said to be in superstitious Hollywood; the cast is so large, that it's really just a matter of statistics. "Rob would have loved to be here tonight," remarked co-star, Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown), "it's just a shame that he's not."

Star, Emma Watson, the 19-year old actress who has portrayed Hermione Granger throughout the franchise and made news recently when she announced her decision to leave acting, dispelled rumors of inter-cast romance: "We have grown-up together from the age of 10... we are just like siblings. There is nothing between the three of us. Even among the other cast members, there hasn't been anything like that."

Harry Potter himself (Daniel Radcliffe) expressed remorse over the franchise's conclusion, but also excitement. The final book in the series has been split into two films. And Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) recovering nicely from the Swine Flu, braved the rain like a champ to make the premiere.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is wide-released on July 15th.

Auto Body Work

When people think about collision repair, they are usually thinking about how the automobile looks. Of course, that is important - you want your car looking as close to the way it did before the accident as possible - but there is the more practical matter of structural integrity. I have personally known people who used creative mechanical tricks to make sure their cars looked good, knowing full well they were not safe.

Your mechanic is going to know you want your car to look nice again, but you might want to mention to the auto body shop ontario residents prefer that you are just as interested in safety. Don't be rude - mechanics are trained professionals, after all, and they know their work - but safety should be more of a concern than appearance when it comes to your auto body repair.

More on the D&D Procrastination

I will get to the rest of the D&D stuff soon, but I'm in the middle of something IRL right this minute. Hopefully, it will be resolved by the new week. I have already started writing the material, it's just a matter of doing a little research and editing.

I'm not like "into" failure, though I've become accustomed to it these last few years, but I truly do hold that every experience teaches you something, and this is very true of the D&D campaign I tried to run. It was inarguably a failure, and I certainly deserve some of the blame, but I'll remind you: the theme is how the current generation lacks imagination and is rendered incapable by lack of specific directions, thus they do not enjoy tabletop roleplaying. They prefer computer roleplaying games, where the path they must follow is laid-out in front of them, and no deviation can take them too far from "the right direction."

At first, I thought it had to do with insecurity and the whole roleplaying aspect, itself; many first-time players feel self-conscious trying to "act" in-character. But as the game wore on, I came to agree with one of the players, who told me, "I just don't have an imagination." Interestingly, the other player - who first entered the situation as a Trouble Player - started taking notes, fleshing-out his character and his place in the world through copious written pages and doodles. These notes are now being integrated into the tapestry I am designing for presentation, but it is interesting to reflect on why he felt more comfortable writing it than acting it out and if that is specific to him or indicative of a group his age, with his preconceptions.

The whole Atlantis setting is aimed at serious collectors. I doubt anyone else will have access to the broad range of products it uses. But this discussion entails the gaming side of the hobby, and has industry-wide implications. None of my observations are ground-breaking, and you've heard them before, but they deserve to be coupled with a IRL case to study.

Harry Potter Star in Hairy Pot Situation

Harry Potter franchise star, Jamie Waylett, will face charges stemming (heh) from an April arrest in which police found eight bags o' pot on the actor. A search of his home revealed 10 cannabis plants, along with equipment used for cultivating weed. Waylett will appear before a court on the 16th, alongside fellow stoner, 20-year old John Innis (arrested at the same time and charged with possession of 11 bags of pot and a knife).

Waylett, 19, has appeared in every Harry Potter film in the franchise (so far) as Draco Malfoy's right-hand man - bully, Vincent Crabbe. He also appears in the latest installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which opens Tuesday.

The Monaco Collective

Monaco Rare Coins is probably the leader in the rare coin collecting circles. A member of the Monex family, Monaco not only helps collectors locate and purchase rare coins at low prices, they serve as a resource for the hobby. Their representatives are over-qualified, as members of the Professional Numismatic Guild, the American Numismatic Association, the Professional Coin Grading Service, the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation of America, The National Silver Dollar Round Table, and more.

It may sound like a Dungeons & Dragons set-up, but that is what makes collecting coins so much fun. What with all the guilds, foreign currencies, and rare coins in-play, you can think of yourself as some enterprising merchant-fighter, conquering overland trails and protecting the roads used for trade. You know, or not. I just mean, all the guilds and coins and stuff. Ahem.

Rare coins are not just fun to collect, they are great, hard asset investments. Just by joining Monaco, you get access to an estimated $10 million worth of rare coins immediately available for purchase. Other coins can usually be acquired, even on short notice. Whether your collection plan is based on wise investing, diversifying your financial portfolio, or you follow rare coin collecting as a hobby, Monaco Rare Coins is a source, resource, and ally in your pursuit.

Female Force TPB Includes Palin Epilogue

Female Force TPB, Vol. IIn light of the resignation announcement by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, her comic biography for Bluewater Productions’ upcoming Female Force trade paperback release will include a new epilogue covering this latest development. Palin confused party peers, and left with a few choice parting words for both them and the media: "How sad that Washington and the media will never understand - it's about country."

"We felt this was another defining moment in her career and we would be remiss if we didn’t update her story," said Darren Davis, Bluewater’s president. "Because of the lead-time needed to print the book for its September release, we will try and include any relevant details reported this month."

Female Force Volume I, scheduled for release September 30th, includes the unabridged issues featuring Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Caroline Kennedy. It also includes a foreword from the Center for American Women and Politics.

The new pages will be produced by Female Force: Sarah Palin’s original artist, Ryan Howe. No plans to update any of the other biographies are scheduled. R
eleased in February, Female Force: Sarah Palin is currently in its third printing and is one of the more successful titles of the series. "She is a polarizing figure, but a compelling one," Davis remarked as to why he thought the Palin title has sold so well. "Many scoffed when I said last year we’ll still be talking about Palin long after the election. I think she will be a topic of conversation for many years."

Female Force offers a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. Each woman featured in the trade paperback will include alternate cover drawings. The suggested retail price (SRP) for the upcoming trade paperback is $15.99.

The Walking Dead Meet Chew in New Flipbook!

The Walking Dead #637 July 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – CHEW’s sell-out sensations, writer John Layman and illustrator Rob Guillory, are teaming up with Image Comics veteran Robert Kirkman to bring their sold-out first issue to the masses in a very special, black and white, full-issue flipbook in the upcoming WALKING DEAD #63 - at no additional charge!

"As a creator, there's nothing more satisfying than hearing that a lot of people are interested in reading your book. The flip-side of this is there's nothing more frustrating than hearing how people can't get a hold of your book to read," Layman said. "So, Image and Robert Kirkman concocted this great plan to put CHEW in a lot of people's hands - and for the unbeatable low, low price of free."

CHEW's star, Detective Tony Chu, is a cop with a secret. As a Cibopath, Detective Chu gets a psychic impression from whatever he eats. While it means he's a hell of a Detective if he can stomach the evidence, once his secret gets out, the government makes plans for him - whether he likes it or not. CHEW blends horror, mystery, and the strangest ability of them all in an ongoing series of horrific crimes solved in the most horrific way possible.

Layman added, "If you're remotely interested in seeing for yourself what all the CHEW buzz is about, this is your chance. Of course, the black & white preview does not do justice to Rob Guillory's magnificent colors in the regular book, so if you like what you read in THE WALKING DEAD, you'll have opportunity to buy second-printings of issues #1 and #2 when #3 hits the stores on August 5th!"

WALKING DEAD #63 (MAY090359), a 48-page black and white comic book for $2.99 featuring the entirety of CHEW #1 at no additional charge, will be in-stores July 17th, 2009.

This is not the first time the two comic worlds have shared a cover; CHEW debuted in WALKING DEAD #61.

The Sky Pirates of Neo Terra

THE SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA30 September 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – THE SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA saga begins in a new, five-issue series with BURN illustrator, Camilla D’Errico, FICTION CLEMENS writer, Josh Wagner, and SKY PIRATES creator, Sean Megaw - setting the stage for the upcoming Nintendo DStm racer from Day 21 Studios and Big Sandwich Games this September!

"Normally writing for an established property is a strict creative process, but the flush world of SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA has given us the freedom to have a lot of fun," writer Josh Wagner said. "In addition, since the video game uses Camilla’s art for character conversations, it's very natural to take those illustrations to the next level."

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA is the tale of a fantasy world once devastated by global catastrophe. Through the tradition of Glidewing racing, order is preserved amongst the remaining tribes with an annual Great Race, where the winner of five, consecutive, glidewing races selects a leader for the Great Tribal Council. With the help of friends, an impulsive young glidewing pilot named Billy Boom Boom must stop the Pirate King before he unleashes dark forces that would change existence as they know it.

Tom Corbett: Space Cadet

Tom Corbett: Space Cadet #1Long before Kirk and Spock were schooled at Starfleet, Tom Corbett: Space Cadet trained at the Space Academy. Now, Washington-based publisher, Bluewater Productions, is set to reintroduce a new generation to the iconic 1950's space adventurer with a brand-new comic mini-series.

Tom Corbett: Space Cadet, a staple in the early days of television from 1950-1955, follows the adventures of the titular hero and his friends, Astro and Roger Manning, as they train to become members of the elite Solar Guard.

"Although it's been many years since his last adventure, Tom and his crew are still appealing characters with strong chemistry and a dash of retro fun," said Bluewater president, Darren Davis. "The series is not just for baby-boomers looking for a walk down memory lane, but promises to be a fun, rollercoaster ride for any fan of space opera."

The four-issue mini-series, scheduled for release this September, is penned by veteran genre writer, Bill Spangler (Alien Nation and Robotech - and a 1990 version of the Tom Corbett series), and features a brand new storyline. The dynamic art style by John DeCosta gives the book a 1950s-retro feel, with a spark of modern flavor.

"I grew up in a town in Western Pennsylvania where the original Tom Corbett books by Carey Rockwell made up roughly one-half of the science-fiction section of the children's' library. So I was a Tom Corbett fan long before I saw an episode of the TV show," Spangler said. "I enjoyed doing the Tom Corbett comic for Malibu Graphics, and I'm very excited about writing the characters again."

During its original run on television, TC:SC sparked a craze of novels, comic strips, comic books, lunchboxes, toys, space helmets, and other merchandise. Today, there are several websites dedicated to Tom Corbett.

Tom is the charismatic leader of the team, Roger is the sharp-tongued navigator, and Astro controls engineering. In the inaugural issue, the cadets have their first encounter with a dangerous new enemy with a surprising origin. "As roaring rockets blast-off to distant planets and far flung stars, we take you to the age of the conquest of space with Tom Corbett: Space Cadet!"
