Acceptable TV and... Other Acceptable TV
Yes, VH1's new show, Acceptable TV, is pretty darned good. If you haven't caught it yet, it's a lot of short skits strung together and the viewers vote for their favorite "episodes." The ones that win show up with new "episodes" next week, along with a host of other new skits to vote on. From executive producer, Jack Black, most of the skits on Acceptable TV are actually pretty funny. Viewers can also upload their own shorts to the website for consideration. Definitely a decent waste of 30 minutes.
Lifetime's Blood Ties, about a comic book-drawing vampire and a hot cop, is actually better than it sounds. I caught the second episode last Sunday and am looking forward to this week's episode just to see how it goes. Now don't get me wrong, it's not Eureka or anything and it definitely holds to the Lifetime sort of sensibilities (a bit on the girly side, one might say), but I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The SFX are good, the acting is good, and the story was decent if a little kitschy. I'd honestly say that the writing reminded me of something a girl who had dated a comic book geek might write, but I'm not calling it "fan fiction" or anything along those lines.
My big weekend thrill now is Sci-Fi's Dresden Files. Like many shows, it started off with a rather blase premiere and went nowhere really fast, but a few weeks into the series, it really hit its stride. The last few episodes have been great! The acting and writing are top-notch, the SFX are really well handled for television fare, and the overall effect is really cool. I'm a sucker for paranormal detectives and anything Chandleresque is right up my alley anyway, so I may be a bit prejudiced, but you should definitely check it out at least once. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
