Artists Suing NBC Over Heroes
A husband and wife artistic team has filed a suit against NBC, claiming that the hit series, Heroes, is based on their original work. The team apparently wrote a story about an artist who can paint the future and showed it along with artwork. They also made two short films based on the concept and showed them in 2004 and 2005. They say that writers from the NBC show, Crossing Jordan, attended at least one of these showings and may have taken some of their work.
Now anything's possible, even though NBC calls the suit meritless and intends to fight it all the way. The funny thing about this is that I actually have a strikingly similar work I have worked on off and on over the years entitled Heroes, which is specifically about a government-created team of superheroes. While the concept sounds almost exactly the same, the execution is completely different and mine is a comic book. The automobile was being developed by different men in different parts of the world at the same time. Still, if the case proves to have any merit whatsoever, the team stands to benefit quite richly, as Heroes is credited for strong ratings on the network, which had fallen seriously behind competition in recent years.
