Now honestly, with all the stuff going on in this world, how is it that a major nation finds time to cause such a ruckus over a kiss? An Indian judge has sworn out warrants for Richard Gere and Silpa Shetty over their public lip-lock.
Don't get me wrong, I have all sorts of respect for norms and values and I couldn't agree more that America doesn't have [m]any good ones. I know that, coming from a guy who lives in a nation that films over 200 pornographic movies a week, this may sound judgmental, but this has gone too far!
And don't think I don't have some perspective on this. Back in 2003 or around-about, Janet Jackson flashed us all during the Superbowl and caused quite a row. That "wardrobe malfunction" is tantamount to this event in that viewers and onlookers didn't really have a choice of just looking away or changing the channel. I can appreciate that some people were offended. But for goodness' sake! One was a BOOB, the other was a boob kissing a girl!
The Press Trust of India quoted the judge as having said Richard Gere and Silpa Shetty's kiss "transgressed all limits of vulgarity and have the tendency to corrupt the society." Are you effing kidding me? He also called it "highly sexually erotic." Now, come on. Come on.
If this guy finds that kiss "highly sexually erotic," then I really don't think he's qualified to judge what is erotic or sexually-charged and what isn't. This judge, one Dinesh Gupta, then ordered Shetty to appear in his court on May 5th to answer to the charges of public indecency.
Talk about a mountain of a molehill. According to AP, India's legal system is "backlogged" and "crippled" due to such frivolous lawsuits, often filed against celebrities by publicity-seekers. Shetty was the one who appeared on the British Celebrity Big Brother and was in the midst of a racism flap when a housemate made some disparaging remarks many thought crossed the line. Indians took to the streets during that international debacle, as well!
If you ask me, this country is obviously full of knee-jerk reactionary prigs who literally sit around waiting for the chance to picket something. Do they not have any more pressing matters to attend?
Shetty herself is upset that the whole episode has taken focus away from the event where it happened, which was to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and agrees that her countrymen are taking the whole thing too far. Further, she noted that she didn't want a foreigner to leave their country with bad memories.
Well, Ms. Shetty, I appreciate and agree with your philosophy, but this is one guy who has no intentions of ever visiting your country for that very reason.
