'68: Hardship

'68: HardshipThe next zombie hit comes from none other than Image Comics, the publisher that introduced fans to the international best-selling hit THE WALKING DEAD. ’68: HARDSHIP is a stand-alone story based in the grisly world that horror writer Mark Kidwell carved-out in the first two issues of the ’68 miniseries. Along with gifted colorist Jay Fotos, guest artist Jeff Zornow (TYRANNOSAURUS REX, HACK/SLASH) illustrates the horrific details of this story about what happens to one soldier when he returns home.

"68: HARDSHIP is my return to the zombie/horror genre," Zornow explained. "This is the darkest zombie book I have ever illustrated. Brutal and to the point, this is a detailed description of the American nightmare, which opens the gates to an undead apocalypse!"

"They say you can't go home again," Kidwell commented. "And HARDSHIP proves that old adage in spades. We're giving readers a look at the American heartland invaded by the hungry undead through the eyes of a battle-fatigued soldier who’s seen far too much horror. This book is dark, hardcore and doesn’t flinch."

In ‘68: HARDSHIP, a young soldier comes back home from Vietnam. However, seen through the eyes of one traumatized by battle and suffering from previously latent schizophrenia, Nebraska does not appear to be the gentle place of his memories. In fact, it appears to be a battleground teaming with the threats of enemy occupation… from both ‘Charlie’ and the undead. '68: HARDSHIP is a journey into a psychological realm of hallucination, violence and undead horror!

’68: HARDSHIP (ONE SHOT), a 32-page, full-color horror comic book, will be on sale August 24th for $3.99.

Orange Beach, AL

Orange Beach is just one of the many, beautiful places to live in Alabama. While many coastal regions get most of the press, the American South boasts many wonderful landscapes, and Alabama has a coast all its own. Orange Beach is a nice, family-friendly area where most people are trusting and happy.

Of course, crime knows no regional boundaries. Even in Orange Beach, theft and break-ins occur. Individuals and families can depend on home security orange beach area firms offer, because these firms know the terrain. They are familiar with the neighborhoods, as well as the crime rates in those locations, and their professional installers and patrols need no directions.

But do not think it is all gloom and doom! Quite the contrary -- it just pays to be prepared, is all. Families enjoy all of the conveniences of the larger cities without all of the high crime rates, crowded living areas, and traffic. Direct TV services all areas, and hi-speed internet is available almost everywhere. All in all, Orange Beach, AL is a great place to consider.

Trailblazer

TrailblazerJimmy Palmiotti (THE PRO, Painkiller Jane) and Justin Gray (Hawkman, Countdown to Final Crisis) will bring a new kind of western to comic stands next month. Known for years as one the most respected and prolific writer duos in the business, responsible for such acclaimed titles as Jonah Hex, RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE, and the recent TATTERED MAN, the two have joined forces with the art of Jim Daly to publish an all new creator-owned one shot through Image Comics: TRAILBLAZER.

"There is nothing more fun than getting to do a bit of genre mashing," explained Palmiotti. "With TRAILBLAZER, we got to mix action with sci-fi and throw a bit of western into the mix, and the results are one hell of a fun ride. We also got to work with a fantastic crew putting this project together. The covers alone by Dave Johnson and Amanda Conner are just icing on the cake."

"Image is a vital and essential part of the comics landscape providing an alternative publishing opportunity for people looking to create new and original works," added Gray. "This is exactly why Jimmy and I wanted to work with Image to release TRAILBLAZER."

Palmiotti continued: "Working with Image Comics on this book was a dream come true for all of us and we are really proud of the end result. We hope to do more in the future."

TRAILBLAZER illustrates a modern, western/science-fiction story about a hired killer who turns in evidence against an employer for the murder of the woman who raised him. The government must then shield their star informant by enacting Operation Trailblazer, a witness protection program that uses not only location but time-travel as well in order to keep their charges safe. As the assassin adjusts to his new life in the old west, he soon finds that no matter when or where he is the future is dead set in coming back to haunt him.

TRAILBLAZER (APR110414), a 48-page, full-color, western/science-fiction comic book, will be on sale for $5.99 in stores July 6th.

Haunt Takes a New Direction

Haunt #19Beginning with the 19th issue of HAUNT, Robert Kirkman and Greg Capullo pass the torch to respected comics veterans Joe Casey (BUTCHER BAKER, THE RIGHTEOUS MAKER and GODLAND) and Nathan Fox (BLUE ESTATE, Florescent Black, and Pigeons From Hell). The pair, who previously collaborated on Marvel’s Dark Reign: Zodiac, are prepared to take Todd McFarlane's HAUNT into even darker territory.

"Haunt is a great character and... Daniel and Kurt are really just getting started in the HAUNT legacy and folklore when Joe and I pick up in issue #19," said Fox. "Artistically, I'm beyond excited to transition from where the creative team leaves off in issue #18 and then completely push HAUNT and the series to new extremes. Joe's scripts and vision of where we're headed is pretty rad to say the least, so for me, it is going to be an inspiring and happily busy monthly pace. Stay Tuned!"

"Opportunities like this -- to take over an existing property so early in its existence -- don't come around too often, and we're going to take full advantage," explained Casey. "Todd and Robert created some great characters in the Kilgore brothers and Nathan and I are locked and loaded to put them through hell. So let the games begin...!"

Industry legend and Image Comics founder, McFarlane (SPAWN), who co-created the HAUNT series and will continue to play an editorial role, is confident that the new creative team are more than equal to the task of scaring up some fantastic new storytelling for the series.

"Filling the shoes of Robert Kirkman and Greg Capullo is a hard task, but I feel very fortunate that the new team will keep the book flying high," McFarlane commented. "I see it going down the pathway of the original Spawn book. Haunt is not going away. It’s the second monthly book I've put out of my company in 20 years that I intend on seeing all the way through to the end."

HAUNT began with a story of two brothers: Daniel Kilgore, a priest, and Kurt Kilgore, a dangerous secret agent. When Kurt was murdered, his spirit did not leave the mortal world as it should have, but continued to hover around his brother, speaking to him... haunting him. When Daniel himself was attacked, the sudden trauma led him to discover that his recently deceased brother could join with him to become something else… HAUNT.

There are two previously collected volumes of HAUNT, with more issues available monthly. HAUNT #19 (JUL110423), a 32-page, full-color, horror comic book for $2.99, is available for order in the July edition of the Diamond Previews catalog, and will be in a comic store near you in September.

Near Death

Near DeathCan a near death experience change a brutal killer into a better man? That's the question Jay Faerber will be answering this September with NEAR DEATH, an all-new creator-owned crime series illustrated by up-and-coming artist Simone Guglielmini.

In a departure from Faerber's work on long-running superhero titles like NOBLE CAUSES and DYNAMO 5, NEAR DEATH is a crime series fueled by regret: After getting a glimpse of his own disturbing life after death while clinically dead for two minutes, professional killer Markham vows to do whatever it takes to prevent his return to the hell he saw before he was revived. He vows to save as many lives as possible, in the hopes that he can somehow balance the scales of judgement.

"After spending most of my career working on superheroes, I'm really excited to be concentrating on my other favorite genre -- crime fiction," Faerber explained. "NEAR DEATH features all the things I love about the genre: the grim hero with no first name and a tortured past, brutal action sequences, and characters with shifting morals and loyalties."

Gugielmini added: "I'm having a great time illustrating Jay's story, because it's just so engrossing. Sometimes I really get caught up in portraying the action and tension of these pages. This stuff is intense!"

Still more than two months ahead of its release date, the first issue of NEAR DEATH has already received praise from some of comics most celebrated writers:

"NEAR DEATH is a killer new crime book with a very sharp hook. Jay and Simone have pumped some much-needed new blood into the assassin genre. Get it." – Brian K. Vaughn (Y: THE LAST MAN, Lost)

"Lean, tough, and smart, NEAR DEATH grabs you from the very first scene and never lets go. As far as first issues go, this one is near perfect." – John Layman of (CHEW)

NEAR DEATH #1 (JUL110404), a 32-page, full-color, crime/adventure comic book for $2.99, is available to order in the July edition of Diamond Previews catalog, and will be at a comic store near you on September 21st, 2011.

Lovestruck September

LovestruckThis September, Image Comics will bring readers a love story like no other. Former collaborators on the Gearhead series, writer Dennis Hopeless (HACK/SLASH TRAILERS 2) and artist Kevin Mellon (THIS IS A SOUVENIR: THE SONGS OF SPEARMINT AND SHIRLEY LEE, COMIC BOOK TATTOO, S.H.I.E.L.D.) are now set to debut LOVESTRUCK, an original graphic novel about the manipulations of a greedy modern Cupid who has made love his business.

"Love is such a powerful part of our lives and yet for so many people it’s just an impossibility,” said Hopeless. "We all have those friends who are talented and charming and great in every other way but just can’t make relationships work. They’re always in their own way. Lovestruck is about what happens when these hopelessly loveless folks are given all the powers of Cupid. But how can you control love when you don’t believe in it?"

“Dennis first came to me with the idea as a follow up to Gearhead and we batted it around for a while,” added Mellon. “It was like a light kind of shone on me and it became something I not only wanted to do, but had to do. One of the many joys about working with Dennis is that everything we come up with together, I pretty much HAVE to do. Come hell or high water.”

Along with strikingly beautiful cover art by Erik Jones, Mellon’s clean, detailed line work illustrates the modern setting of Hopeless' unconventional love story perfectly. In LOVESTRUCK, Kali Monroe gets paid to break hearts. When love is a billion-dollar industry and the closest thing to cupid is a megalomaniacal CEO, what’s a girl to do?

However, Hopeless and Mellon's version of Cupid, as Caleb Goellner of ComicsAlliance put it, "...is far from a cherub... and bears more of a resemblance to the theoretical lovechild of Marvel's Wilson Fisk and Akira's Tetsuo than a happy, naked, angel baby dude you'd want shooting infatuation arrows your way."

LOVESTRUCK OGN, a 192-page black and white original graphic novel for $16.99, will be available at a comic store near you on September 7th, 2011.

Epoch: The Greatest Tournament Ever

Epoch #1Berkeley, CA – Image Comics, Top Cow Productions, and Heroes and Villains Entertainment proudly present a dark and intensely kinetic tale from writer Kevin McCarthy (Red Sonja, The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist) and artist Paolo Pantalena (What If?: House of M, War of Kings: Darkhawk). EPOCH, a 5-part miniseries beginning in August, will introduce readers to a whole new reality which pits one supernatural creature against another in a dangerous competition.

"EPOCH meets all of my criteria for a cool comic: murder, mayhem, mythology, mystery, and monsters. And a hero that dresses like Ming the Merciless," explained McCarthy. "EPOCH is the kind of comic I'd want to buy. Where else can you see an angel with inner demons solve the murder of a werewolf, pistol-whip a wizard, and run game on a gorgon?"

"When Heroes and Villains Entertainment presented us with EPOCH, we knew we had a terrifically dynamic, exciting world that comic fans would really respond to," said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. "Kevin McCarthy has really brought the concept to life with a huge cast of fascinating characters and intrigue that will keep readers coming back month after month. And if that's not enough, Paolo Pantalena's art is sure to grab fans by their eyeballs and refuse to let go."

As the story of EPOCH begins, NYPD Detective Jonah Wright’s world is about to change forever. A mysterious murder case that he has been investigating threatens to rip apart his reality, plunging him into the shadowy world of the supernatural. It appears that Bishop is fated to unlock a conspiracy that could tear apart the very fabric of society!

EPOCH #1, a 32-page, full-color, science-fiction/fantasy comic book for $3.99, will be available at a comic store near you on August 3rd, 2011.

Gamehouse

For years now, I have avoided video games of all kind, be they simple home box sets, online MMORPG, or what have you. I have known a lot of people who basically got "addicted" to them - to the point that they lost jobs, girlfriends/boyfriends, and have even been evicted - but that can be said of anything and I do not blame the games themselves. I simply thought of them as a waste of time.

However, I am coming around slowly after living alone for this long. I always enjoyed certain video games as a kid and there is a dearth of truly fun entertainment these days, despite having the Internet. Gamehouse has a huge selection of online games that you can play anytime, from anywhere, with a Fun Pass. And you get a free, seven-day trial to get you going.

For those of you who, like me, are not really gamers by nature, Gamehouse also brings you a free game each day. Everyday, the free game is different, and you can play at no charge. You can also buy games at drastically discounted prices for download. So what are you still reading for? Go ahead and see what Gamehouse has for you!

Written by celebrated author, artist, and digital producer Andrew E.C. Gaska, and adapted from a story by Gaska, Rich Handley, Christian Berntsen and Erik Matthews, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes recounts what happened between the scenes of the classic 1968 20th-Century Fox film, centering on the astronaut John Landon, Chimpanzee scientists Dr. Milo and Dr. Galen, and Gorilla Security Chief Marcus. The book contains 30 full-color paintings and another 19 black-and-white illustrations, including a cover by legendary artist Jim Steranko (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and interior art from some of the top talent in the industry, including renowned book cover painter Ken Kelly (Conan, KISS), Joe Jusko (Savage Sword of Conan, Tarzan), Sanjulian (Eerie, Vampirella), Mark Texeira (Ghost Rider, Wolverine), Leo Leibelman (Heavy Metal), Matt Busch (Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica), Brian Rood (Indiana Jones, Star Wars), Tom Scioli (Godland), David Hueso (G.I. Joe: Storm Shadow), and newcomers Dan Dussault (Critical Millennium) and Dirk Shearer (Mice Templar).

Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes marks an expansion of Archaia's successful collaboration with Gaska, following up on his science fiction comic epic, Critical Millennium: The Dark Frontier, which has received early critical acclaim. Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes also marks Archaia’s first venture into prose books.

The original Planet of the Apes was an immediate pop-culture phenomenon, spawning film and television sequels that spanned decades, including the 2001 remake starring Mark Wahlberg and the latest, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring 127 Hours star, James Franco, Harry Potter's Tom Felton, and Immortals' Freida Pinto.

Storming

It has literally stormed its ass off up here for months now. I have been taking it easy on posting for personal reasons, but the power was off for three days straight a month or two back, then another two days straight like a week later.

Despite unplugging the computer when it storms, I still lost the new one to yet another lightning strike last Saturday and it was Wednesday before I got the refurbished model I'm on now. Honestly, I've lost literally two-three full work weeks to weather alone, just since April!

In fact, it has been storming here since last Friday, though Saturday was the worst of it (so far). It's mostly just been rain since then. That one was a creeper, in that it really was just rain and a little thunder, and didn't appear to be anything to worry about, then lightning just struck some key areas -- just out of nowhere, and there were only a handful of strikes -- that knocked-out phonelines, Internet, and power to people all over the area for several days. It really was like the storm knew to lay low up to the very last minute, then exactly where to strike to cause the most damage.

And, just as soon as it had caused as much damage as it could throughout the area, it was gone. It really was kind of eerie.

At any rate, it took me several days to get this computer up and going. I had to download basically everything, from Adobe to Firefox Plug-Ins and Updates, but it's finally starting to come together now. I also moved it into another room and am using yet another phonejack. The only problem is that the only phonejacks that work in this house are on exterior walls and it costs about $60.00 to have them come out and install another one, so I'm still going to have to unplug the PC whenever it storms.

And it's still raining -- in fact, it forecasts strong storms today through Tuesday, then after a brief respite, storms start back up next Sunday! Lately, my computer's been unplugged more than it's been running, yet I still managed to lose another one.

For those keeping score, that's three -- brand new -- computers I've lost since moving to this house two years ago!

Thriller Jacket Fetches $1.8m

The jacket Michael Jackson wore in the classic Thriller video went for $1.8 million at auction. The winning bidder, a Texas commodities trader, said the jacket was to be sold with some of the proceeds going to help children's charities. Some of the $1.8m goes to a California animal reserve, where Michael Jackson's two Bengal tigers now live.

Michael Jackson is regarded as one of the first black performers to be shown on MTV. His Thriller album became, and remains, the best-selling album of all time. The long-play video premiere was heavily promoted and was critically lauded. It was nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards and won three. Thriller was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2009, the first music video to be included.

The glove Michael Jackson wore to the 1983 MTV Video Awards show also became iconic, and was also sold at the auction.

AD&D Game in the Works

Sorry, but I'll be posting at about the same rate for the immediate time-being, as I'm gearing-up to run an AD&D 1st/2nd -Edition tabletop campaign online. We're in the very beginning stages of the whole thing, including choosing software and virtual tabletop sites and so forth. It will definitely be a few weeks before we figure out what to use and what we're doing, then it will be trial-and-error as we get used to the system(s) we decide to use.

Once we know what we are doing, we will open-up the game to new players. Details will be posted on the site (I'm just not sure exactly where or anything at this point). You will also find campaign notes and information there, if you just want to kind of follow along.

New PC

Sorry for my absence. Lightning struck the phoneline last Saturday, knocking-out the power in two of the rooms in the house, as well as the Internet. Phone and Internet service was down throughout the area well into Monday, when technicians came to my house to check the lines and make repairs. The strike destroyed the motherboard of my new HP-Pavilion, which was just at one year old.

I got the new PC off of eBay for just over $100 and, so far, I couldn't be more satisfied. Unfortunately, it takes a while to update and merge my old data, some of which I won't even be able to access until I get the data retrieved from the old hard drive (which I may try to slave myself sometime in the near future).

moving here to TEXAS!

I appreciate the guest post, Jewel Rodgers

Moving to Texas was the biggest risk I have taken to date, and though it's been quite a roller coaster ride, I feel good about my decision to get halfway across the country to live with my boyfriend. I even opened my own sandwich shopon Broad Street last year, it's done really well thus far! Just last week, I went to texaselectricityproviders.com to make sure we had a good energy rate and I renegotiated some of our vendors to make sure we were paying as little as possible for the high quality meats and cheeses we used to make our product. I'm feeling really confident that moving to Texas was the right decision, even though it has taken me a while to adjust to the culture shock I've been feeling. I can't believe how different things are here compared to California where I came from, but I'm getting used to saying y'all in wearing cowboy boots on occasion. It won't be long before people are confusing me with and Texan!

No Money, Mo' Problems

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but I've had a ton of issues, both medical and household-based. For one thing, the internal wiring in my home is apparently not up to standards according to my phone company, and I've been living with a single phoneline this entire time. A new one was installed the other day, but it interferes with my DSL.

Storms in the area keep knocking-out the power and someone from the electric company is supposed to come out today to look at the connections. But, in my personal opinion, the problem is area-wide. To be honest, I don't much care about the rest of the area; I've fought to change things for everyone -- to make this a better place to live for all of us who are impoverished and disenfranchised -- but I found little to no support; I just want my situation to improve and I'll... pray for the rest of them.

The lights are flickering and going out on occasion here, so forgive me for flooding if I do and enjoy. Thanks a ton!
