Quick Comic Book Geek Movie Bits
Joss Whedon (of Angel, Buffy, Serenity, and more fame) has quit the WB Wonder Woman movie, citing creative differences.
Those outside of the creative industries may not understand exactly what this means but, to put it bluntly, he refused to sell-out. In more refined phraseology, WB wanted to go one way with the movie (to appeal to a larger demographic, I'm sure), while the artist in question wanted to go another (staying true to the character, her true values and motivations, and all the other reasons for which she was created, I'm sure).
Wonder Woman was created by a psychologist who wanted to give young women a superhero icon to match those of the boys'. Warner Brothers (i.e., AOL/Time-Warner) owns DC Comics. This is interesting, since many of Whedon's former projects have been handled by the WB megaconglomerate, in one or another of its many, many, many, many, many, many nom de plumes.
Fangoria has thrown their hat into the movie-making ring, with a feature that rings-in at $100 million. This is their starting amount; it will more than likely be exceeded during production. Now, while this does kick serious ass, Fangoria has been the preeminent splatter flick authority for decades so, no matter what they do, their hardcore fans are likely to poo-poo it. I suggest skipping the blogs entirely on this one and checking it out for yourself.
Except this blog. Like, durr.
The only truly cool thing Fangoria ever turned me on to was Lunchmeat, so I'm not going to go too far in either direction based on my opinion of the magazine itself. I haven't even read Fangoria since highschool.
Icons: Frank Miller, March 4th! G4. Watch it, bitches!
