Heritage's Illustration Art Auction

The Heritage Auction Illustration Art Auction which closed on June 14th was a record-breaking event on many fronts.

A charcoal sketch by Norman Rockwell entitled, Girl Observing Lovers on a Train, originally done as a study for a Saturday Evening Post cover, sold for $203,150. That's the third highest price ever paid for a sketch done by the legendary American artist, as well as the highest price paid at a Heritage auction in six years.

An illustration by the legendary Dr. Seuss fetched the princely sum of just under $18,000. Haddon Sundblom's End of the Road went for a little over $19,000. Sundblom is the cat what painted the iconic Santa Claus ads for Coca-Cola in the early 20th-Century.

The auction house was so excited by the prices this category garnered that they said they were going to place more focus on this category in the future. A spokesperson for the auction house noted that the original works brought at least $5000 each "across the board."

Other featured artists included Boris Vallejo and Gil Elvgren, among others.
