Both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien will return with new episodes January 2nd after two months of repeats thanks to the ongoing writers' strike. Neither will have on-staff writers, so it is unclear how the formats will be different from normal - especially since neither has ever been all that funny.
Conan has his moments, but his show owes much to his predecessor's (David Letterman's), in that the brunt of the "humor" is intentionally stupid; Conan can be funny, but his show is generally just non-sensical. It doesn't matter that it is purposely so; being intentionally stupid is not necessarily funny: look at Adam Sandler.
Jay Leno has never been funny.
Speaking of David Letterman, his show may return soon, as his production company, Worldwide Pants, is set for independent negotiations with the WGA. If these negotiations pan-out, his may be the first late-night talk show to return with new episodes and comedy writers. E! Network's Chelsea Lately has continued producing new shows during the strike, and the fair Ms. Chandler is getting funnier with each episode.
