With all the hoopla surrounding the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD debate making news recently, it turns out HD-DVD may have the upper-hand when it comes to consumers.
While Blu-Ray seems to be the more widely-accepted format throughout the industry, early versions of the players will not be compatible with new developments. Blu-Ray players were released in "profiles," with the earliest models being Profile 1.0. Most of those on the market now are Profile 1.1, but neither of these can be upgraded to allow users to access the new features, such as connecting to the Internet to download ringtones and additional features.
The new Profile 2.0 players are scheduled to be released sometime this year, but Sony's PlayStation 3 already has the necessary hardware, so those owners will not need to upgrade their player. Playback of DVDs with the new features will not be affected, though the additional features will not be able to be accessed by anyone using a machine other than the Sony PlayStation 3.
