When I was around 13-15 years old, I started reading a guy named HP Lovecraft. I first heard about him from Stephen King, who was my favorite author when I was a child, and got his books from the local bookstore. They had just re-released his works in a series of softcovers with Michael Whelan paintings for the covers. For most of my highschool career, I was obsessed with Lovecraft's work.
A few years ago, I tried to reread some Lovecraft and simply could not do it. The writing was strained and the vocabulary simply ridiculous. The concepts were still strong and, once you got into the story, the flaws were easier to overlook, but I have to admit that Lovecraft -- for my money -- is best enjoyed by the young.
Of course, I still have a soft place in my heart for all things Lovecraftian, including Call of Cthulhu, which was the first RPG I became renown for running.
Lovecraft died 75 years ago, as of March 22nd, and the BBC wrote this great article to commemorate his passing.
