Spider-Man 3 Breaks Records Worldwide

The ol' webhead done gone and shattered box office records worldwide its opening weekend.

According to various sources, Spider-Man 3 took in an estimated $59 million opening day, beating the previous record of $55.8 million held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (set just last year). The webslinger set records in America, as well as Asia.

By Sunday (today), it had made an estimated $149 million, once again beating Dead Man's Chest, which held the record previously. Company sources are now saying everyone involved is dedicated to making at least three more pictures within the series, even though both Maguire and Dunst have intimated they might not be interested in continuing. As I reported here, that's just how the game is played: they are angling for more money. Both Maguire and Dunst would be silly not to continue on with the franchise at this point.

The box office results far exceeded anyone's expectations - especially since critical reviews were not overwhelmingly favorable, with The Washington Post calling it "plain awful." Exit polls reveal that the audience genuinely seems to enjoy the picture, "and that's what counts," according to Sony Pictures executive, Michael Lynton.
