Storms and More

As you all know, this area of the country has been battered by storms and tornadoes over the last few weeks. A couple weeks ago, I spent three full days without electricity; about a week later, I spent another 12 hours in the dark; and just the other day, I went the whole day without internet connectivity.

After each of these outages, I had more pressing matters to which I had to attend -- specifically, some non-paying advertisers -- so I couldn't post much. I also had to take a day or so to get my groove back, and because of their timing, I've simply been unable to keep-up as well as I'd have liked to.

Furthermore, this area is expecting storms starting again on Sunday that are forecast to last several days, so we may be down again! However, I'm still here, doing what I can when I can.

Repulse

RepulseRobots are not alive. They have no memories, philosophies, or inner monologues. They are senseless, devoid of feelings, and don't understand what it means to be alive. However, in Image Comics' upcoming dark science fiction thriller REPULSE, Szymon Kudranski presents a scenario in which a robot appears to actually have memories of a past life spent as a human.

"I wanted do something new with robots, but it almost seemed everything had already been done," Kudranski said of his decision to contribute to the canon of futuristic science-fiction stories about artificial intelligence. "There are robot killers, robot cops, robots that wish to be humans or wage revolutions, but the human experience of reincarnation merged with robots was intriguing enough that I felt I should create a story about it.”

Szymon Kudranski is an up-and-coming artist who recently made an impressive debut on Todd McFarlane’s preeminent title, SPAWN. Rather than mimicking McFarlane's signature style, Kudranski brought his own distinct sensibilities to Image's flagship character and continues to attract attention with each new issue. REPULSE was created before he began working with McFarlane and was originally conceived of as a three-issue miniseries, but will now be published as one complete graphic novel in July.

"Readers who are interested in the progression of my art style should enjoy this story as a comparison to what I'm doing on current projects," Kudranksi added.

"From his work at Shadowline to his current issues of SPAWN, it's been really wonderful to watch Szymon's ongoing development as an artist," said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "When he brought REPULSE to us, it was an unexpected gem."

In REPULSE, the robotics of the near future have helped solve the worst crimes and changed the world, but one detective employing the most high-tech solutions must be able to catch a serial kill who preys upon his fellow officers before the technology also brings about his own destruction.

REPULSE (MAY110440), an 72-page, black-and-white, science-fiction thriller comic book, will be available for order in the May issue of Diamond Previews and goes on sale July 6th for $6.99.

Super Dinosaur is Not Extinct!

Super Dinosaur #1Not only is Robert Kirkman a NY Times Bestselling author of comics for adults, but his new all-ages title with artist Jason Howard has exceeded expectations right out of the gate! While the sales for all-ages comic books are typically lower than that of their PG-13 counterparts, SUPER DINOSAUR #1 has out-sold many other titles on the shelf this week before even hitting the shelves. Now, the first new series published under Robert Kirkman’s Image Comics Skybound imprint, SUPER DINOSAUR #1, has sold through its first printing at distribution level and is now being rushed back to press for a second-printing.

Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard previously worked together on the recently-concluded horror/superhero series, THE ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN series. SUPER DINOSAUR is the creative duo’s first crack at creating a comic book their own kids can enjoy. In fact, the original concept behind what later became the modern, genetically-modified dinosaur we see today was first introduced as a character to entertain Howard’s son.

"It's awesome to look back on that first sketch I did with my son and see how it has evolved into a full-blown comic, incorporating a bunch of the things I loved as a kid myself," Howard reminisced. "But beyond the missiles and dinosaurs, Robert is really infusing the characters with heart and making the story something that all audiences can enjoy, I can't wait for people to see what is coming up!"

The two creators are pleased to have provided kids like their own with a new reason to start reading comics. In fact, a free SUPER DINOSAUR ORIGIN SPECIAL, which picks up right where SUPER DINOSAUR #1 leaves off, will be widely available at participating comic shops on Free Comic Book Day (5/11), giving young readers additional incentive to get into the habit of reading comic books. Plus, SUPER DINOSAUR #1 will not only be available in comic shops today in print, but has also been simultaneously released on Comixology.com as a digital comic for the iPad or iPhone through the Image Comics app.

Fear the Reaper

Reaper 2BERKELEY, CA --15 April 2011 – Best known for his work providing gray tones on THE WALKING DEAD, artist Cliff Rathburn is returning to his own creator-owned work this July. REAPER is the second installment of a horror/fantasy tale first published in 2004, as a black and white one-shot written by Robert Kirkman. Seven years later, Rathburn is picking up the threads of that initial story in an all-new full color one-shot that looks even more amazing than the first.

The original REAPER one-shot told the violent and gutsy story of a deadly assassin, Reaper, who had been hired by a mysterious figure to kill a supposedly indestructible tyrant ruler. That mysterious figure turned out to be none other than Death, though, whose ultimate aim was to wipe out all life on Earth. Rathburn’s knack for handily illustrating brutality and dismemberment, however, brought the story to vivid (and often unsettling) life.

"REAPER was the first time I worked with Robert Kirkman, and he really took my creation and improved it," explained Rathburn. "His script kept me driven to penciling, toning and lettering the first volume of REAPER, which is a lot of work for one person to do on their own.

"As of right now in my career, I have done everything you can do in comics apart from writing my own script. Writing the second REAPER has given me the a chance to play to my strengths as a penciler and helped me produce a final product where I can finally say I am proud of my work."

The second installment of REAPER begins 400 years after Death failed to eradicate life. Now, the magical gem that gave Lord Shirak his power has fallen into the possession of our hero, allowing Reaper to become a warlord himself. Unfortunately, as Reaper should know full well, Death is not easily deterred...

"REAPER is a gem from early in Robert Kirkman's writing career, and seeing the story continue should be a real treat, not just for his fans, but anyone who likes visceral, over-the-top artwork," said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Cliff has spent several years now doing gray tones on THE WALKING DEAD and he's inked several issues of INVINCIBLE over Ryan Ottley, but he's an amazing artist and storyteller in his own right. And if you thought REAPER looked good when it first appeared in black and white – just wait 'til you see it in color!"

The original REAPER one-shot (JAN041314) is available now for $6.95, while REAPER #2 (MAY110438), a 48-page, part color and part black & white comic book priced at $4.99, which will be available for order in the May issue of Diamond Previews catalog, with an in-store date of July 21st, 2011.

The Return of Avengelyne

Avengelyne #1More than a decade ago, Image Comics founder Rob Liefeld (creator of YOUNGBLOOD, Deadpool) introduced a beautiful and vengeful angel to comics. She fought the demons of the 1990s, providing fans a story of good vs. evil on an apocalyptic level. Now, following in the footsteps of Liefeld, writer Mark Poulton (Koni Waves) and artist Owen Gieni (Sore Thumbs) are announcing a relaunch of AVENGELYNE for Image Comics.

"As with any of my creations, I try to marry the right creative team with a character, and after a long chat with Mark Poulton, I knew he was the writer for the gig," Rob Liefeld said of his decision to relaunch AVENGELYNE with an all-new creative team."

Mark has chronicled the adventures of a female lead in his Koni Waves series for the past several years, so he is a natural for AVENGELYNE. Artist Owen Gieni worked up the best samples I've ever seen. Both are ready to treat Avengelyne fans to amazing, daring, and controversial new story lines.

"We are all hard at work on the third issue, these guys are hungry and eager to deliver AVENGELYNE to a new generation of fans!"

"Rob is the reason I wanted to get into the comics business in the first place," Poulton stated.

"To be able to relaunch AVENGELYNE with Rob at Image is a dream project. Owen and I are committed to doing a lengthy run on the series that will define the character."

"Working on Avengelyne is truly a dream come true for me!" exclaimed artist Owen Gieni. "My goal is to do as long a run as I can, get better each issue, and to do it monthly! We hope to touch all corners of the larger Image universe, reintroduce a ton of Rob's classic characters, and create a bunch of crazy new ones. This book is a pure dream to draw. I'm in Heaven."

Poulton further explained: "The appeal of the character for me wasn't the demons or the scary monsters she faced, but the fact that she was fighting for redemption. She had fallen from grace and was paying for her sins. She's flawed. When you combine that aspect of the character with the demons, scary monsters, and supernatural world she lives in the possibilities for stories are endless."

The redesigned supernatural heroine, AVENGELYNE, will return to comics to continue her search for atonement by correcting the wrongs of villains the likes of Torment, an aptly named psychotic serial killer, and Red Dragon, who appears to have found a new human vessel. With this new characterization of Liefeld’s original character, artist Owen Gieni’s depiction of AVENGELYNE is not only sexy, but ready to battle all the plot twists that Poulton has up his sleeve for her.

AVENGELYNE #1 (MAY110432), a 32-page, full-color comic book priced at $2.99, will be available for order in the May issue of Diamond Previews catalog and goes on sale July 20th, 2011.

Bluewater's Wave Strikes This Fall

Bluewater WaveThis Fall, Bluewater Productions brings you a brand new world of superheroes. Art Director Gregg Paulson (Judo Girl, Paparazzi) and Line Editor AE Stueve (The Legend of Isis, The ABCs of Dinkology), along with a slew of artists and writers, are launching The Wave #0, Bluewater Productions' take on a shared universe. The line starts with The Wave #0 and leads into four four-issue mini-series revolving around mythological heroes and gods in modern times.

Bluewater intends to grab the serious attention of superhero fans. Though you've heard the names before, this is a brand new take, brand new concept, and brand new world. The upcoming titles include Artemis, Orion, Hercules, and Trident: The Power of Poseidon. Are you ready for The Wave?

"These comics will show the world that Bluewater Productions is not just about biography and property comics, but can produce well-written, beautifully drawn superhero stories as well. I think the coolest thing is that we are using the 'shared universe' formula familiar to fans of Marvel and DC, but right now we don't have a convoluted backstory of characters who, in some cases, have been around for nearly 100 years. That's not to say that it wouldn't be cool to create characters that are so awesome that in nearly 100 years the universe they share will be a convoluted mess. Because that would be cool. But hey, why not mention in our PR announcement one of the best advantages we've got over several other superhero comics these days?" --AE Stueve, line editor/writer, Orion

Bluewater was founded on creating updated versions of different types of mythological characters such as 10th Muse (which launched as the sixth highest-selling comic book) and Legend of Isis and Atlas 10 years ago. "This is just another branch of books we are doing," said Bluewater President Darren G. Davis. "As a kid I was fond of mythology, so I am excited to see what they are going to do with it."

Storms in Area

Sorry for the late start again today. I am feeling much better than I was, though still not out of the woods, but there are storms sweeping through the area. The Internet was down this morning and has been intermittent. It appears stable now, but the forecast calls for more storms through the evening. I have to finish my taxes this weekend, so I may or may not be around then.

Anyway, I tried to pack as much as I could into the remaining hours.

Fame: Ryan Reynolds

Fame: Ryan ReynoldsCatapulted from obscure roles and modest television credits to one of Hollywood’s reigning male A-list stars, Ryan Reynolds is making a star turn in an upcoming Bluewater Productions biography comic book based on his life and career.

Scheduled for an May 2011 release, Fame: Ryan Reynolds follows the actor from his up and coming days in Canada through his 2002 breakthrough role in National Lampoon's Van Wilder to his ascendancy to leading-man status in such films as The Proposal and the upcoming superhero blockbuster, Green Lantern.

"Ryan Reynolds is one of those rare actors who appeals to both men and women. Women love him for his obvious good looks and charm, but his humor and action role turns bring in the men. It's no wonder he's headlining one of the hottest films of the summer," said writer Mark Poulton. "He's definitely proving himself to be a force at the box office."

Poulton, the creator of Koni Waves, teams up with fellow Koni Waves artist Dexter Weeks to showcase People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2010 in a standard 32-page issue.

Graveyard of Empires

Graveyard Empires #1From Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union, war-torn Afghanistan has brought the world's greatest armies to their knees, earning the nation its infamous reputation as the “graveyard of empires." With the debut of this new series from Image Comics, the Marines will not only be in danger from enemy forces, but also from the undead!

Mark Sable, writer of Unthinkable, Teen Titans: Cold Case, and Two-Face: Year One returns to Image with GROUNDED co-creator and Amazing Spider-Man artist, Paul Azaceta, for an all-new series that combines current military events with stark horror.

"Despite the many conflicts the US military is engaged in, there is currently a real dearth of war comics," Sable explained. "I'm honored to return to Image, a publisher brave enough to tackle a comic that literally rips the face off of modern warfare."

"Mark and I researched the hell out of this book to make the military aspect as authentic as possible," added Azaceta. "But don't let that fool you – this is heart-pounding survival horror at its best!"

In GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES, when a young lieutenant arrives at Combat Outpost Alamo, a remote outpost in Afghanistan, he learns a new kind of insurgent math. It's said that in war, when you kill one insurgent, you create 10 more by angering his family and friends. In this story, when you kill one, he comes back from the dead to infect 10 of your fellow Marines!

"Mark Sable and Paul Azaceta got off to a truly auspicious start with GROUNDED, and it's great to have them working together again at Image on GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES," Stephenson said. "They've come up with a fantastic fusion of horror and war comics that's probably best described as Robert Kirkman meets Harvey Kurtzman. Really, really excellent stuff here."

GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES #1 (APR110400), a 32-page, full-color horror/survival comic that will appeal to fans of The Hurt Locker and THE WALKING DEAD, will be available for sale in a comic shop near you on June 15th, 2011 for $3.99.

Gladstone's School Opens in May!

Gladstone's School for World ConquerorsVeteran Image scribe Mark Andrew Smith (AMAZING JOY BUZZARDS, the Eisner-winning POPGUN anthology, and the two-time Harvey nominated THE NEW BRIGHTON ARCHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY) has teamed-up with the clean, crisp lines of Armand Villavert to present a brand new title, GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS. This series offers a new perspective on the villain training process and a fun new story for kids of all ages to enjoy.

"We couldn't be more thrilled about GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS! Creating the story and the characters has been a truly exciting experience," Smith exclaimed. "We're building an entire universe here with GLADSTONE'S and hope the characters will become recognizable icons in the future. GLADSTONE'S has taken on a life of its own. There are so many facets of the GLADSTONE'S universe that we look forward to exploring. Readers are going to fall in love with the universe we're creating!"

Artist Armand Villavert said, "GLADSTONE'S has been a labor of love for more than four years now. I've enjoyed drawing GLADSTONE'S every step of the way, mostly because the characters have a great amount of emotion and fun to them. I love drawing... facial expressions and really conveying to the readers what the character is thinking. I hope those readers will have as much fun reading it as I've had drawing it. GLADSTONE'S is funny, action packed, and dramatic and I hope I continue to work on it for years to come."

GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS #1 takes place at a top secret academy where many children of the world's greatest supervillains go to learn the family trade. Kid Nefarious, Mummy Girl, Martian Jones, Ghost Girl, and the infamous Skull brothers must navigate the trials of Gladstone's as they unearth the school's, and their parents', hidden past. In this action-packed but lighthearted romp, the students find themselves at a time when they must deal with both the problems of growing up as a child of infamous lineage as well as just plain growing up in general.

GLADSTONES SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS #1, a 40-page, full-color, all-ages supervillain/adventure comic book, is in stores May 4th, 2011 for $2.99.

Uncanny X-Men #540
© C Harris Lynn, 2011

No Fear Itself

If you've noticed I'm not covering Marvel's Fear Itself event it's because I don't believe in those things, as I've said time and again. From a publishing standpoint, I understand it, but I don't believe readers should be forced to purchase dozens of titles a week just to follow one character's, or team's, story.

This is nothing against Marvel, which publishes most of my favorite characters; this is a decision I made based solely on the fact that I'm sick to death of these mega-crossover events. These days, there are hundreds of blogs and websites covering the comic book industry, not to mention Marvel's own site, and every one of them are covering the event - which, for what it's worth, I'm certain is only the first of many such events planned for this year.

I don't expect The Big Two, or any other company for that matter, to change the way they produce, publish, or sell their product based on whether or not I choose to cover them or whatever, I simply do not like this approach to business and I don't want to support it. Obviously, as the companies will continue to run these events, I'll continue to cover them; this one simply came on the heels of two of these events (Siege and Shadowland) which burned me financially and creatively. In fact, the very next post is from the X-Men Fear Itself tie-in, because I still love the X-Men (even though I no longer collect them).

I haven't even finished all of the Shadowland titles! The truth is, it simply isn't that interesting, and that makes me feel like I got robbed. I can't overlook that.

Image Eisner Nominations

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards committee has announced the nominations for books published in 2010, and Image Comics is pleased to be the publisher behind 12 of the Eisner nominations. Hot on the heels of an explosion of break-out new Image Comics titles, this announcement verifies that the publisher is leading the way with the most successful and the most critically-acclaimed of new creator-owned comics. In fact, Image has tied for the publisher who has the second most nominations this year.

Two of Image's recent big success stories, CHEW and Shadowline's MORNING GLORIES, will go head to head for Best Continuing Series and Best Writer! Industry veteran John Layman and stylistically-singular artist Rob Guillory have brought readers CHEW, the comic about a cibopathic detective that has been both turning stomachs and quenching readers' hunger for fun, well-told supernatural comedic crime stories. Guillory was also nominated for the Best Penciler/Inker award for his work on CHEW.

Meanwhile, in MORNING GLORIES, prolific young writer Nick Spencer and newcomer artist Joe Eisma, are telling a compelling science fiction story about a group of high school students who attend a prestigious but mysterious prep school, The Morning Glory Academy, with readers finding each page posing more questions than the last. Not only that, but MORNING GLORIES has also received a nomination for Best New Series!

Also nominated for Best New Series, Ian Churchill's effervescent hero MARINEMAN makes us hope for a return to a more innocent time, when good guys do win! Churchill's underwater superhero adventure is written and drawn with such genuine heart and soul that it's obvious why he chose to publish this project as a creator-owned title.

Image Comics anthologies such as COMIC BOOK TATTOO and POPGUN, VOL. 3 have won Eisner awards in years past. This year, the publisher has continued that trend with multiple nominations from three different anthologies, including a Best Anthology nomination going to LIQUID CITY, VOL. 2, edited by Sonny Liew and Lim Cheng Tju. POPGUN, VOL. 4 brought us Best Short Story nominee “Hamburgers for One,” by Frank Stockton. Silverline Books children's anthology FRACTURED FABLES provided two nominations for Best Short Story: "Little Red Riding Hood," by Bryan Talbot and Camilla d’Errico, and "Cinderella" by Nick Spencer and Rodin Esquejo. And to top it off, Esquejo also got a Best Cover Artist nomination for his memorable painted work for the MORNING GLORIES series' covers!

"As always, we're incredibly proud of all the writers and artists nominated," said Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. "It's particularly cool to see John and Rob get nods for a second year running, and more proof that CHEW is one of the best creator-owned books on the market."

Here's the complete list of Image Comics' Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Nominations:

  • Best Short Story: “Cinderella,” by Nick Spencer and Rodin Esquejo, in FRACTURED FABLES (Silverline Books/Image)

50 Girls 50

50 Girls 50Two years ago, LIBERTY MEADOWS creator Frank Cho and The 'Nam and Jungle Girl writer Doug Murray went in search of an artist to illustrate their all-new 50 GIRLS 50. Today, they're putting the final touches on a four-issue miniseries drawn by 50 GIRLS 50 contest winner and new ELEPHANTMEN artist, Axel Medellin.

Working from a script written by Murray, based off a story conceived by Cho and Murray, Medellin has completed the entire four-issue miniseries, now in the process of being colored by SAVAGE DRAGON and INVINCIBLE colorist Nikos Koutsis. In addition to providing character and world designs, Cho is also illustrating covers for each issue.

"It's been a long time coming, but we're finally in the homestretch with this project," said Cho. "We all know how disappointing it is when something planned as a 1-2-3-4 miniseries doesn't ship monthly, so we wanted to make sure the entire miniseries was complete before offering it for sale. This baby's 100% done, though, and you'll be getting an issue a month from June to September, whether you like it or not."

"We're really pleased that Frank and Doug banked these issues so they could ship uninterrupted over this summer," added Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "And everyone who's seen Axel's work on ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1 knows what a great find he is, so it's going to be like getting a double-dose of artwork over the course of this year."

A sexy sci-fi romp set in a far-flung future, 50 GIRLS 50 chronicles the fantastic voyage of the Space Vessel ESS Savannah and her beautiful crew as they fight to escape hostile aliens and exotic worlds, searching for the wormhole that will take them to their ultimate destination: Home.

50 GIRLS 50 (APR110392), a 32-page, full-color comic book priced at $2.99 is available for order in the April issue of Diamond Previews and goes on sale June 1st.

The New 'Breed

Breed IIIThe legendary Jim Starlin is set to conclude his groundbreaking series, 'BREED, and he's doing it at Image. ‘BREED III begins the story's charge to its climactic and pulse-pounding finish, while ‘BREED: BOOK OF GENESIS trade paperback collects the first chapter of Starlin’s long-out of print epic. Both will be released on May 11th.

Although he has contributed to various titles of multiple genres, Starlin is best known as the master of the cosmic comics, thanks to his work on Captain Marvel, Warlock, Silver Surfer, and The Infinity Gauntlet trilogy. He was also an early proponent of creator-owned comics with his long-running Dreadstar series.

"This, I believe, was the best work I ever did," stated Jim Starlin on the upcoming ‘BREED: BOOK OF GENESIS collection. "I rank the ‘BREED series even over my Thanos and Dreadstar series. It's, quite simply, my favorite creation."

The original ‘BREED was a six-issue miniseries published by the short-lived Bravura Comics imprint during 1994. It was quickly followed by ‘BREED II, and now in ‘BREED III #1, the series’ titular protagonist, Ray Stoner, has to face the fact that he can no longer hide from what he is: a monster. He returns to the mystical city Elsewhere to discover much has changed. He finds himself forced into a struggle with stakes far higher than he feels ready for.

"This is a series I've been waiting more than 10 years to finish off,” Starlin explained. “Be warned, after a good fight at the beginning I sneak in some story, but it's okay – the last three issues are one continuous epic battle. By the way, nearly everything you think you know about 'Breed is incorrect, whether you read the original two series or not."

BREED III #1, a 32-page, full-color comic book priced at $2.99 and ‘BREED: BOOK OF GENESIS, VOL. 1, a 176-page full color trade paperback priced at $17.99 will both be in stores on May 11th, 2011.
