Well, the media is having a heyday with all the Hollywood Bad Grrlz and the revolving door on LA County's jailhouse. Turns out Nicole Richie reported to jail for something like 45 minutes, thus serving her time, and Lindsay Lohan (my future ex-girlfriend) is expected to do the same.
Apparently, the trick here is to turn yourself in a few minutes before midnight. Those few minutes count as one day. Then the time it takes them to book you and all that acts as yet another day. I can tell you from personal experience that is not the way things are handled in Decatur County, TN. They can't tell the difference between 12 hours and 7 days.
But even though my experience is an obvious example of small-town corruption gone amuck, what these Bad Grrlz are up to smacks of even more brazen, slightly less-than-criminal legal practices. The entire point of jail is to limit one's freedom and, hopefully, show one that jail is not a place one wants to be. It's a deterrent at this level, and sometimes an effective one - not unlike expensive fines and so forth, which are also used as deterrents. At a higher level, prisons and long-term jail stays are used to protect society by housing dangerous and anti-social people from the rest of us. These dangerous people are often repeat offenders and they are considered dangerous because they just don't learn - or don't care to.
But how effective is any of this when the deterrents just aren't being applied? I mean, even a $1 million fine for any of these chicks isn't going to really hurt them, and that's why they garnered jail time; it may slow them down a bit and make them think (heh - give them the benefit of the doubt, huh?), but it isn't going to put a real dent in their lifestyle - jail time will. And if they are only made to spend a few minutes in jail every couple months, and then a good 30 days in a glorified spa-cum-"treatment facility" or "rehab," they're going to go right back to boozing and doping in no time, flat!
But, let's face it: people that rich and good-looking just don't do no Wrong. Heck, that's why Scott Peterson was innocent!
What? Oh. Oh, yeah. Well...
Well, that's why OJ is innocent! Yeah, y'all said it.

He was. To this day no one can point to any valid evidence that Scott had anything to do with the abduction and death of his wife - even the jurors cannot explain on what basis they voted for guilt. Given the preposterous hypothesis the prosecution offered, Scott's case is just another trial by hysteria.

I don't know that I would have thought to look had this not come up recently, but I just got back from the store, where one of those tabloids had Scott Peterson plastered across the front, claiming he was recently "busted" doing drugs and having gay sex with another killer on death row.
The tabloids are even less trustworthy than the cops, but let's face it: Scott's a pretty, pretty boy.
