Authoress, JK Rowling, revealed that one of her characters in the wildly successful Harry Potter series is gay. Dumbledore, headmaster of the Hogwarts School (or whatever), is gay and was in love with the evil wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, whom he beat in a battle many years before. Rowling said this unrequited love was Dumbledore's "great tragedy."
The announcement was made at Carnegie Hall in New York Friday as she kicked-off her US book tour - the first in seven years. The audience applauded, prompting the best-selling authoress to declare, "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."
But some have not been so accepting. One gay rights activist said that while he is glad gays and lesbians were depicted in the book, he wished that Dumbledore's sexuality had been made more explicit. Rowling herself said this would give Christian zealots, who often accuse the series of promoting witchcraft, even more fuel for their fire.
Now I don't care on which side of the fence you land when it comes to homosexuality - genetics or life choice, whatever - but I would be remiss if I didn't point out that a name like Dumbledore can't exactly inspire confidence with the ladies, you know? I mean, exactly how secure are you going to be in yourself, your sexuality, or anything else when you know at some point, you are going to have to make the statement, "It's Dumbledore - no, seriously!"?
