Jon Stewart has been tapped to host the second biannual "Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education." The show will be broadcast live on Comedy Central, April 13th. Replays of the show will be available via iTunes for $1.99.
The show features routines, sketches, and film clips from personalities such as Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, Conan O'Brien... okay, none of these people - while I like many of them - are really "stars." Maybe Will Ferrell and Conan O'Brien, but let's be blunt: these are just SNL alumni. Moreover, this is to benefit Autistic children - an admirable cause - because SNL writer, Robert Smigel's - creator of the only consistently unfunny cartoons since Minoriteam left the airwaves - son has Autism.
Nothing wrong with that - still an admirable cause - but why not just call it "A Night of a Handful of SNL Castmembers Raising Money for One of the Writers' Sons"? Or maybe "A Night of Too Many B-Listers Trying Desperately to Extend Their 15 Minutes"? I'm just asking. So I'm no marketing genius, but whatever happened to truth in advertising?
Besides that, Jon Stewart is not funny; Will Ferrell is not funny; Adam Sandler is not funny; most of the rest of them are funny at least some of the time, so we can only hope this is one of those times.
And don't think I don't appreciate the sentiment behind this event - I don't - I'm just tired of all these self-important assholes getting together every five minutes to gladhand one another and act like they give a damn about anything other than their careers. If all these people care so much about Autism - or hurricane victims or AIDS in Africa or the environment or anything else, for that matter - why not contribute to their cause without all the fanfare? Why not make a lasting difference instead of just showing-up when the cameras are on?
