Snap!, Crackle!, and Pop! Turn 80

In 1927, the research and development department at Kellogg's presented the founder with a puffed rice cereal. Rice Krispies were a hit with the public, who enjoyed the sound they made when immersed in milk. The company introduced the cartoon characters - Snap!, Crackle!, and Pop! - in 1932.

Over the years, they appeared on the box as illustrations as well as in sequential form. But it was in the 1960s when they made a real "splash," as the characters appeared in TV commercials. A hit with youngsters, Rice Krispies were already a breakfast staple, thanks in no small part to the recipe for Rice Krispies Treats, which first appeared on the box in 1939.

So technically, Snap!, Crackle!, and Pop! are only 69; Rice Krispies just turned 80!
