In the previous post I talked about mainstream character comic book movies. Now I'd like to talk discuss the two other summer movies, Wanted and Hellboy 2.
While we've seen some predictable behavior from comic books linked to major characters, the behavior of lesser known characters and comics has been more sporadic.
Take Stardust for example. The movie was basically a flop, and the comic book really didn't move. Usually the comics make a move in advance of the movie premiere. It didn't really occur in this case. Had the movie been more popular the comic may have done better, but we'll never know. We do know there was no pop in price do to hype in anticipation of the movie.
Look at another character, Hellboy, and we see completely different behavior. Next Men #21 (first Hellboy) went through the roof. Copies hit up to $200 in CGC 9.6 in 1994. Now, the same issues are selling for well under $100, so buyer beware. It doesn't look like the second movie is having any affect on prices. In contrast, major characters have seen bumps in price even in their second and third movies (Spider-man comes to mind).
One unusual connection was the performance of Transformers. This wasn't a comic book movie, but the issues of the comic book spin-off from the toys were amazing. CGC 9.8 copies of Transformers #1 (1984 series) topped out at $500+ and CGC 9.6 copies hit just under $300. Go figure.
So where are we now? I'll keep watching Next Men #21 (Hellboy 2) for price info, but I don't have high hopes. I'm watching Wanted to see the behavior of this 2nd Tier book and movie. CGC 9.8 copies of the standard issue are selling for about $42, so use that as a new baseline.
If you're thinking of playing these second tier movies, be careful. The data shows there has been no reliable formula, and after the movie hype fades, prices can fall like a rock.
