Will Smith and Family Top Box Office

Not only did Will Smith top the box office charts this past weekend, his daughter's new flick was the only other new entry in the top 10.

Smith stars in the new superhero-based movie, Hancock, about a scruffy loser of a superhero who always seems to cause more problems than he solves. This is the fifth time Will Smith has topped the charts in North America over the Independence Day weekend. However, reviews are pretty bad for the superhero-outing; most critics say Smith is all that saves the film, while others note that even he can't do that. However, at least one report I read noted these reviews were almost the same as those of his last flick, the Apocalyptic, sci-fi/horror film, I am Legend (based on the classic novel by Richard Matheson), which went on to break records worldwide.

Meanwhile, Smith's daughter, stars in Kitt Kittridge: An American Girl, which debuted at #8.

Disney/Pixar's WALL-E fell to #2, with The Incredible Hulk a #6.

Hancock made slightly less than Transformers did its opening weekend, this time last year. Sony Pictures announced it will release the movie online to owners of its Bravia TV before it goes to DVD/PPV.

I haven't seen it, so I can't say. I'm just going by the reviews, which are mostly bad. I figure it can't be that bad, since it made it to #1.
