RealDVD Shelved

RealDVD was described by RealNetworks as a legal way to copy DVDs. The MPAA thought differently.

On the date of its launch (September 30th), six major movie studios filed suit against the software, claiming it circumvents industry rules against copying. The suit was filed jointly by Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, Disney and Warner Bros. The case is set to be reviewed October 7th.

RealDVD is software which claims to turn any PC into a media server, eliminating discs altogether. According to a spokesperson, the company was in talks with studios throughout the process right up to the date of launch and was hoping to avoid involving the legal system.

The RealDVD site has been taken down for now, though a defiant message ensures us the fight is not over.
