Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, has died. The 61-year old musician was found dead in his hotel room in Portland, Oregon. While initial reports indicate his death appears to be from natural causes, an autopsy will be performed. Mitchell was the only surviving member of the trio from the 1960s; Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, and bassist Noel Redding passed away in 2003.
Mitch Mitchell performed on several of Hendrix' groundbreaking albums and single-handedly developed the drumming style for which he came to be known. Throughout his career, he also played for such luminaries as Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Keith Richards, and more. Mitchell was the drummer at Hendrix' legendary Woodstock performance.
