I subscribed to this entire series and loved every minute of it! I kept meaning to review it for you and know for a fact I mentioned it because there is a tag for it, but I had no idea so many others were interested. In fact, I simply wasn't too encouraged to say more on it and now I find out everyone else was digging on it too... dorks.
Lethem is one of those rare authors who had absolutely no problem making the leap to sequential work. Better yet, since he has experience in other forms, his writing was easily amongst the best out there - the best I've seen in a while, in fact! He actually gets that when there is a picture there, you do not need to describe what is happening in said picture. Meanwhile, elsewhere... Lethem goes beyond that simplest of Golden Rules so many established professionals continually break and transcends the usual comic book narrative: he lets the art carry the story (as it should, is this thing on?) so that there almost is no narrative, making the story that much more tense, that much stronger, because of it. Much like the lack of a soundtrack or mood music heightens the tension in a horror film.
Omega: The Unknown is one of the most intense character studies I have ever personally read in comic books. I would honestly put it right up there with Frank Miller's year run on Daredevil (the one with Kingpin - you know the one) in that regard.
Even more impressive was the marriage of the artwork. Obviously crude in that "kid's drawing" sort of way, you realize once you get involved just how highly apropos that concept is - like using watercolors on Aquaman, you know? A sincere artistic expression, I liken it to an actor who is trained in Dance taking on a role where he has to act like he can't dance: it takes real effort to make look doing it bad that good.
Truly a fantastic series I highly recommend and kept meaning to review as I was reading it. Thankfully, this press release reminded me!

Centering on a teenage prodigy from Washington Heights, and his relationship with Omega, a mysterious and silent Super Hero from another world, this epic, nuanced story remains one of the 2008's most critically lauded releases. The graphic novel that has everyone from NPR to Maxim to Men's Health buzzing is available in stores NOW!
Jonathan Lethem commented, ""Omega the Unknown is a great character -- a kind of archetypal Super Hero who's also a blank slate. The original story had an uncanny power over my imagination, and seemed potentially to have the intrigue and complexity of a great novel. I've always been drawn to comics as a medium and this chance to work with Marvel -- and to revive this character and bring his story to fulfillment -- is a kind of a dream-come-true for me."
Don't miss the graphic novel that Amazon.Com named one of the best graphic novels of the year—Omega: The Unknown Premiere HC and it's in stores now!
