Three Men and a Baby kind of took the world by storm when it was first released. This was back in the 80s, when movies were actually good because they had actual stories. I have tried to figure them out many times over the years, but I can't discern any real formula behind the hits of the 80s... I'm pretty sure there is one, but of the better movies, they mostly did their own thing. Three Men and a Baby was no exception.
While a lot of movies then were actually formulaic, the better flicks tended to go in their own direction, focusing more on character and dialogue than situation, plot, or premise. Consider 9 to 5, which was ultimately about sexism in the workplace and equality for women, etc., but told the tale in a meandering, comedic way. In fact, were I to pinpoint any kind of cycle in the bigger hits, that would be it: 1980s movies were largely left to their own devices and allowed to ramble; they weren't focused to death.
At any rate, news has it that the three stars are reuniting for a sequel to complete the trilogy. Entitled Three Men and a Bride, one has to wonder if there is any way it can recapture the magic of the first one - which even the sequel lacked. One also has to wonder if, 20 years later, anyone even cares...
