Ip Man Wins Big Prize at Hong Kong Film Awards

Alright, so this is a blog about Americana, but what's more American than kung-fu? Oh. Well, we cover entertainment in general, if you will recall. I think this is a fantastic time in which we live - one of true hope and good intentions. I only hope those good intentions don't put us in a bad position, but I'm trying not to think negatively. It's wonderful that we get to hear more about China and its culture these days, and that's why I wanted to bring you this post:

The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) are awarded annually and have been since their inception in 1982. Like the Oscars, the awards have many categories and the event is to honor Chinese filmmakers. Unlike the Oscars, voting is open to all registered voters, as well as critics, and a select group of "adjudicators." Much like the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys, those who deserve to win don't always get the trophy: Jackie Chan has been nominated 10 times and has yet to win!

This year, a film about the man in whose shadow Jackie Chan might forever had been (Bruce Lee, of course), Ip Man, won for Best Picture. John Woo's big picture, Red Cliff, did very little, though it won big in technical categories (including Best Visual Effects). A mockumentary about life in an average village, The Way We Are, swept the main categories, including Best Actress and Director.
