ABC's Eastwick, based on the John Updike novels and the 1987 film (with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer), will not be picked-up, though all 13 episodes will air. It drew fewer than 5 million viewers last week. ABC has not announced its replacement.
Eastwick suffered from numerous problems, but its pacing was foremost. Instead of picking-up where the other works had left-off, it tried retelling the story from the beginning, leading to several initial episodes void of anything supernatural, as well as anything interesting.
Eastwick's curse was bad writing. One of the first things neophyte writers learn is to show the story. Eastwick continually foretold, but rarely delivered. This is such a basic tenet in writing that I find it shocking Eastwick made it to TV! And the show did this with everything, not just the magic - with Darryl Van Horne, sex, the women's friendship and relationships with other characters, et.al. With better writing, Eastwick would have been a better show.
