Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane are still in legal battles over characters in McFarlane's Spawn title which Gaiman says he created and should own. According to Gaiman's attorney, McFarlane "...just took some of the characters Neil was a co-creator of and just gave them different names." Which is not at all what Image founders who previously worked at Marvel did when they established the comics house in the early 1990s.
Gaiman worked with McFarlane on a single issue of the title early in its run, in which several, minor, characters were introduced. In 2002, Gaiman filed suit against the Spawn creator, demanding compensation for the revenue those characters he created. Gaiman won the suit and the two agreed to decide upon a figure, but one has yet to emerge. Gaiman has now filed suit for three more characters, which he claims are based on the characters he created.
