NPR recently did a story in which it tried to determine what is to blame for the rise of the prep, and it determined (largely) that it is an honest reaction to the trashy, "porno-chic" trend that has gripped the American public (or, at least, most of its younger females) the last several years. At least that's the insight of one guy in the fashion biz, and it sounds about right.
The more interesting thing is how he champions the preppy look as distinctly American -- something I have never really given much thought. Of course, I'm no fashion... maven (can I even be a "maven" - what the hell is a maven)? Still, I like the idea.
I always liked the preppy look, just not the preps, who were -- true to form for the 1980s -- generally buttholes and future fratboys. Still, there is certainly nothing wrong with looking nice, and now that I know the preppy look is full-on Americana, I figure I'll rock it a little more often. And it's about to be winter, so that will be easy (most of my "nice" clothes are winter clothes; I wear comic book and concert Tees in the summer).
