Detroit artists, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts raise $50,000 to build a statue of iconic cyberpunk superhero, Robocop. But city officials are not sure if they will allow it to become a public fixture, as it may send the wrong message about Detroit. The group has already commissioned the sculptors. A spokesperson said a nonprofit arts group plans to display the statue if the city refuses.
Jeff Pallendorf sent Detroit city mayor Dave Bing a message through Twitter, asking if the mayor supported the idea of a statue of Robocop. Bing tweeted back that there were no plans for such a project and his remark went viral. A spokesperson for Bing's administration said the city is now looking into how it could display the Robocop statue.
