If you've only seen Vincent Price do that melodramatic overacting for which he is known, then you haven't really seen him perform. Price was actually a very good actor, but he made his career as a a bit of a cheeseball in a series of horror films. He was somewhat typecast, but you have to admit, he does the over-the-top bit quite well.
And he's rarely as over-the-top as he is in The Abominable Dr. Phibes, showing tonight on TCM's Underground. This is one of his better flicks and is a good show, all the way around. It's suitably creepy, definitely disturbing, and some of the kill scenes are pretty creative even today. In fact, it was one of the first horror movies to do the whole "creative kills" bit and it does it to the hilt. I wondered why I hadn't seen it this past Halloween. Which, as an aside, AMC is showing tonight (someone needs a PDA).
I know I'm getting old, but I wish Underground started earlier. They usually show the better movie last and I hate waiting until damn 4 in the morning to catch a flick. Half the time, if I even make it that far, I end up crashing halfway through the show anyway.
Catch Dr. Phibes, though. Kicking flick.
