Were it not for a certain webslinger, Shrek the Third would have smashed box office records this past weekend. As it stands, the movie still set a new record for biggest animated movie opening and the third biggest opening weekend of all time. Of course, the new Pirates of the Caribbean opens this coming weekend, which is expected to set records as well.
According to several sources, this is the biggest movie summer of all time so far. Also up this season, the new Harry Potter installment is expected to draw huge crowds. With so many big movies this season, it's good to see 28 Weeks Later hold onto the #3 position, with Spider-Man 3 falling to second place. Disturbia is the big surprise, having held onto the top position longer than any of the other big draws that have opened so far, and still remains in the top five.
