First Grendel Art Sells for $25k

I've discussed before how the anti-hero has taken over the superhero role throughout the industry. I have particularly made mention of the fact that a lot of this came about in the late-1980s to 1990s, but in reading about this, I have to admit I had all but forgotten about Grendel. Grendel, originally from Comico, was certainly at the forefront of this movement, premiering in 1982, it was also Matt Wagner’s first published sequential work. Wagner also worked on the FGU RPG, Psi World, but he really shines in the sequential form. In particular, Wagner’s Grendel/Batman: Devil’s Masque 2-part series was probably his magnum opus (to date).

This year is the 25th anniversary of the release, and Dark Horse has a live-action movie in the works. Private collector, Hari Naidu, bought the cover art for Grendel #1 for $25,000 in money and trade in a private transaction.

If you have never experienced Grendel, I highly recommend the entire series. Wagner is one of the few talents in the industry who not only works in 32- and 64-panel sequences, but does them like no one else. Devil’s Masque is his best work and should be available on e-Bay.
