Ticket sales for this weekend's box office were down for the fifth straight weekend, when compared to last year. While some analysts early-on suggested the WGA strike may have had some impact on this, I said then that I doubted that assessment and stand by what I said; I think this continuing overall decline proves that. Weak films are to blame for the drop in ticket sales.
The Golden Compass landed at #1, but New Line Cinema expressed disappointment that the film did not break the $30 million mark it was expected to; Golden Compass pulled in just over $25 million opening weekend. Beowulf, another high-budget fantasy film, fell to 5th places in its fourth week on the charts.
Vince Vaughn's comedy vehicle, Fred Claus, rose two spots to #4. It is uncommon for movies to rise on the charts after their premieres, but it does happen, and has happened twice so far this year (Bee Movie did it a few weeks back). Wes Craven's new classic horror flick, Scream, is one of the true success stories that continued to rise in the charts until it hit #1, several weeks after its debut.
