Shout! Factory has acquired exclusive rights to the entire Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) library, including episodes that have never before been released on DVD.
Created by comedian, Joel Hodgson, MST3K ran for a year on a local Minneapolis station before it was picked up by fledgling cable station, Comedy Central. Hodgson left the show about midway through its epic 11-season run and was replaced by head writer, Mike Nelson. The show ran its last three seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Recently, two camps have evolved from the revolving cast and created spin-off companies, sites, and similar outfits. RiffTrax features Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett; Cinematic Titanic features Hodgson, Frank Coniff, and Trace Beaulieu. RiffTrax now has a player you can download to listen to their tracks, synched to your (not so) favorite movies, while Cinematic Titanic is still finding its footing.
Shout! Factory will eventually release all 198 episodes on DVD and/or through other digital distribution channels (read: online).
