Howard portrayed Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark's best friend and soon-to-be fellow crimefighter, War Machine. According to reports, Marvel wanted to work with Cheadle to begin with and when financial talks with Howard fell through, they approached him with the role.
The Jim Rhodes/War Machine character is expected to have a major role in Iron Man 2.

Terrence Howard told NPR he found out he had been pushed out of the War Machine role in the trades. He does not seem happy.
