Born in Ohio, Majel had a successful TV acting career before Star Trek. When then boyfriend, Gene, created Star Trek, he cast her as a nameless first officer, but she rose to fame as Nurse Chapel. She played the character in the original TV series as well as the films.
She went on to play recurring characters on all of the Star Trek spin-offs, usually as the voice of the ship's computer. In fact, Majel Roddenberry's final performance will be in JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film, where she reprises her role as the onboard computer voice.
Majel and Gene married in 1969. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991, but Majel helped usher more of his works onto the small screen, including Andromeda. She is survived by their son, Eugene Roddenberry, Jr.
