A Floridian mother who claims her child is now in "extensive therapy" after stealing an adult version of a popular manga from the Crestview Public Library stands accused of misleading other parents into signing a petition to have manga removed from the library.
Margaret Barbaree, founder of Protect Our Children, approached other parents and adults at a local Christmas parade and asked them to sign a petition to have pornography removed from the Crestview Public Library. Upon receiving 225 signatures (plus her own), Ms. Barbaree attempted to extort the community into removing manga, which she incorrectly referred to as anime (Japanese animation) in the document. Her deception was brought into question by one of the local librarians.
The Crestview, Florida City Council President, Charles Baugh, Jr., visited the Crestview Public Library the day of the council meeting at which Ms. Barbaree gave her presentation, and assured all present that the manga in question was available only in the adult section, and that "safeguards" are in place to prevent minors from accessing it.
Ms. Barbaree says her son is now in a home, where he is receiving extensive therapy.
