85-year-old Edward Kean, former head writer of the children's classic TV show, Howdy Doody, died August 13th from emphysema. Kean not only served as the head writer, he also wrote the Howdy Doody theme song, and is even credited with coining the word, "kowabunga."
One family friend called Kean "prolific" and said "He influenced an entire generation [Baby Boomers] through his writing." Howdy Doody aired on NBC from 1947 to 1960. Edward Kean wrote for the show for seven years, leaving in 1954.
