Myself and several players have been discussing getting our own guild for some time now. We really want to raid and this was to be the main purpose of the guild, but we wanted to remain casual - getting together once a week or so and not being concerned if we miss an event here and there - and this was not possible with most of the established raiding guilds, who take it very seriously.
Like most things, I wanted to take my time and plot out exactly what I was going for. I also wanted to research how to manage a guild, what was involved, and all the rest. However, someone was selling a guild that already had a few levels and one of the guys with whom I had been speaking went ahead and bought it. I left my longtime guild to assume responsibilities as co-GM.
The next morning, I awoke to find that I had full GM rights. The acquaintance who had purchased the guild was nowhere to be found. I chased him down on Skype where he informed me that, due to personal issues, he'd been forced to close his account so he just gave me the guild.
I was stuck! I had absolutely no idea what to do, how to run a guild, where anything was, and so on. Furthermore, over the weeks we had been discussing this, several of the people who had said they wanted to raid had quit playing. So here I am, stuck with an empty guild I had no idea how to run.
I searched everywhere online for more information on how to run a World of Warcraft guild and found nothing. There were plenty of obvious stories on how to start a guild, what a guild is, and that sort of thing, but no concrete information such as, "You will find the settings for your Bank Tabs in the Guild Control panel located on the Info tab." Luckily, most of these things became evident simply by playing with them.
Also luckily, a few people who had been MIA for a while suddenly returned, so I was able to recruit a small number of guildies. I filled the Guild Bank with all the many items that had been crowding my bank and bags for these last few months and got to work on some of the details no one else bothers with - like a suitable backstory as to why our toons banded together in the first place. I know it isn't necessary but I like little things like that and the game is what you make of it.
So I suddenly find myself up to my eyeballs in guild stuff. The good thing is that I may be the one to write those tutorials on how to run a guild.
