Stephen Colbert made an official announcement yesterday on The Daily Show, where he was formerly a writer before getting his own political satire talk show, The Colbert Report.
Colbert said, "the people have spoken" and he has decided to run for President of the United States. But there are some caveats: he will run as both a Republican and a Democrat, and he will only run in his home state of South Carolina.
While this was his "official" Presidential candidacy announcement, Stephen Colbert intimated he might be up for such a run during his appearance on Larry King Live last week.
While obviously lampooning the Presidential campaigning and electoral processes, Colbert's entrance into the race may very well have an effect on the outcome of the election. If fans and irreverent voters decide on Colbert, this takes votes away from serious candidates.
Several decades back, MAD Magazine spokesman, Alfred E. Neuman ran for President. He did not win, but when asked if it bothered him, Neuman responded, "What, me worry?"
