Other than that, Gough said they pretty much had free-reign to use any of the characters featured in the Superman comics titles or movies. Gough left the show last season... and Smallville has since picked-up.
Gough and Millar had a lot of "nevers" that impeded the show and many fans were glad to see them go. Smallville had gotten so stale that most expected the seventh season to be its last. And while it remains to be seen if a ninth season is forthcoming, the eighth has definitely reignited the excitement of the earlier episodes.
