Spider-Man Broadway Musical Broke, Production Halted

The Spider-Man Broadway musical, Turn Off the Dark, is apparently out of money and production has been halted - what's more, this isn't the first time! Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, turned some heads when it was announced that U2's Bono and The Edge would be providing the musical score, but little else about the stage play has cracked the mainstream press until now... and this may be the penultimate story printed about the money-sucking musical, now reported to have a staggering $45 million price tag!

According to The Vulture, production on Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, was halted back in June (when its budget was a mere $40 million) because a bank loan had not come through. Now, Marvel and Sony - much like "The Dark" - are said to be "turned off" by the whole project, though spokespersons for the show deny that. The Vulture lays the blame squarely at producer, David Garfinkle's feet, and report that rumor has it he's on the outs - expected to be replaced possibly by the time you read this. However, the same article says the same spokespeople deny this, as well.

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark is set to begin previews February 25th and open in March, 2010.

Let's hope this little break restores some sanity to the Spider-Man universe http://thebrowntweedsociety.com/2009/08/10/how-to-really-save-spider-man/

I'm a frayed knot:

It appears the Spider-Man musical is dead, as actors are being let out of their contracts.

According to the New York Times and a "capable math source," it would have had to play sold-out shows for five years running just to break even!

Producers are having a sit-down with the director and the production team to discuss the cash-flow problem. They are expected to announce a delay of the show, because it doesn't look like Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark can open on or before April 29 - the cut-off date for the Tony Awards.
