The hate-mongering Westboro Baptist Church said it would protest the 2010 Comic-Con because convention attendees and comic book readers in general practice idolatry. "Reverend" Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, quoted Isaiah 2:8-9 as the basis for the Church's demonstration. Before the Renaissance, art and inventions were eschewed, as they were "acts of Creation" and God was the one and only Creator; to create one's own work(s) was considered an affront to God. Phelps did not think this through as deeply, and I sincerely doubt he has any measure of historical knowledge; he's just an asshole.
And only three assholes from the Westboro Baptist Church showed-up to protest the 2010 Comic-Con. More than 100 Comic-Con attendees and assorted nerds launched a counter-protest across the street, bearing signs and T-shirts which read, "God Loves Gay Robin," "Superman Died for Your Sins," and similar messages.
The extended Phelps family comprises almost the entirety of the Westboro Baptist Church's congregation.
