Happy Birthday, Mike Mignola! (Hellboy)
Mike Mignola, best known as the artist and creator of Hellboy, turns the big five-oh (50) today and The Weirding wishes him a very happy birthday! Mignola started turning heads back in the late 80s with his work on Big Two titles such as Alpha Flight, The Incredible Hulk, and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight and numerous comic book covers. In 1993, Mike Mignola teamed with other industry heavyweights, such as John Byrne and Frank Miller, to create the Legend imprint under the Dark Horse banner, under which he released Hellboy in 1994.
Mike Mignola continues to write and contribute to Hellboy, which now spans several graphic novels and a number of ongoing titles. He has also written a novel and worked on several Hollywood films (including two adaptations based on his Hellboy series).

Hellboy, Umbrella Academy Available on iPhone
Dark Horse is proud to announce that Mike Mignola's Hellboy and Gerard Way's The Umbrella Academy are now available on the iPhone.
At the time of their publication, both Seed of Destruction and Apocalypse Suite were immediately renowned by critics as unique and talented debuts by independent creators. Soon, industry heavyweights joined the chorus. Hellboy: Seed of Destruction is the beginning of the now legendary series Alan Moore calls, "a passport to a corner of funnybook heaven you may never want to leave." Hellboy Tops Box Office
Hellboy II: The Golden Army topped the box office, knocking superhero-based Hancock into second place. Hancock is actually doing quite well, despite almost universally bad reviews.
The Incredible Hulk fell out of the top ten. Mirroring the Ang Lee version, which also fell off the charts in its fifth week, the Edward Norton version also stands at $129 million, just $1 million more than Lee's at the same time of its release.
WALL-E dropped to fourth place and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull rounded-out the list.

Limited Edition Hellboy 2 Weapons
Hollywood Collectibles will release two Gold Edition weapon replicas based on the weapons used in the new Hellboy II: The Golden Army movie.
Limited to 5000 pieces, Hollywood Collectibles will ship the weapons in the fall. Hellboy's sword and Prince Nuadu's spear will be individually numbered and come with a Hellboy 2-themed wall plaque.
While Hellboy II: The Golden Army will almost certainly not meet the heights of Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and other superhero-based smashes being released this summer, the extremely limited run guarantees these will be worthy collectibles investments. The first Hellboy movie was considered a box office "flop," but did great numbers on DVD/PPV sales - enough so that a sequel was greenlighted. And Dark Horse continues to improve the comic book line, adding many new titles and limited series, most involving the series' creator, Mike Mignola.

Hellboy Heats Up This Summer!

With Hellboy II: The Golden Army coming in July, there's no better time to get up to speed on what's happening with the characters in the B.P.R.D. Dark Horse will be releasing three new B.P.R.D. titles by Mike Mignola and B.P.R.D. vet John Arcudi into the Hellboy Universe for summer reading pleasure — with new revelations for Liz Sherman and the origin story for Johann Kraus, as well as a bit of backstory for the Bureau's battle with the infamous frog creatures.
June 5th will see the first installment of War on Frogs — a series of four one-shots that pick up from the March-April B.P.R.D. feature on MySpace Dark Horse Presents. Renowned artist Herb Trimpe (The Incredible Hulk) joins regular B.P.R.D. writer John Arcudi and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, with Guy Davis handling the inking, for the first one-shot story in this series that will feature a different legendary comics artist for each issue. War on Frogs chronicles the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense's fight against the frog monsters, set mostly between the events of B.P.R.D.: Plague of Frogs and B.P.R.D.: The Black Flame. As the frog cult spreads across America, Roger the Homunculus returns to the site of the B.P.R.D.'s first clash with the frog creatures — the ruins of Cavendish Hall, where Hellboy, Abe, and Liz first encountered both the frogs and Rasputin (Hellboy: Seed of Destruction) — to track down the final pieces of the puzzle of the Cavendish family. War on Frogs #2 is scheduled for a December release and will feature art by Eisner Hall-of-Famer John Severin (Two Fisted Tales)!
On June 18th, The Ectoplasmic Man arrives! This one-shot comic tells the origin of Johann Kraus — corresponding with Johann's appearance in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and including previously unrevealed details of how he came to be. Mignola/Arcudi team up with illustrator Ben Stenbeck (Living with the Dead) to round out the creative team! The Ectoplasmic Man is the ideal introduction to one of the most peculiar members of the remarkable Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
Finally, on July 9th, Mignola and Arcudi reunite with long-time B.P.R.D. illustrator Guy Davis for B.P.R.D: The Warning, a five-issue series that immediately follows the events of B.P.R.D.: Killing Ground. The team rushes to track down the mysterious gentleman who's been appearing in Liz's visions, as a slew of old enemies menace the Bureau from all sides in a catastrophic escalation to the end of the world.
"I'm excited," says Mike Mignola. "B.P.R.D. is really picking up speed now. Fans can start girding their loins for big, catastrophic changes to come."
"As many changes as we've already seen take place in the B.P.R.D.," says John Arcudi, "now is when it really starts getting nuts!"

Hellboy BPRD
Mike Mignola is one of my favorite artists of all time. He has this distinctive, chunky style that's both hyper-realistic and cartoonish. It's one of those styles that once you see his work, you know immediately, "That's Mignola!" This is an official Dark Horse press release:
Comics guru Mike Mignola teams up with rising star Josh Dysart (Swamp Thing, Conan and the Midnight God) for one of the most intriguing and revealing tales in the Hellboy Universe. BPRD: 1946 is the story of the early days of the Bureau and the quest for answers that explain, among other things, the enigmatic Hellboy’s apocalyptic origin.
In the wake of the second world war, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm—occult investigator and guardian of the infant Hellboy—founded the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to investigate and defuse the remains of the Axis' sophisticated occult warfare projects and potential Soviet threats. Now, outfitted with a small band of war-weary Allied soldiers, Bruttenholm begins to unravel the mystery of the Nazi Occult Bureau's greatest and most threatening initiatives: Project Vampir Sturm.
“Hopefully this will be the first of several books showing the evolution of the BPRD from a three- or four-man organization to something more like what it is now,” says Mignola “The focus here is on Bruttenholm, looking into the mystery of Hellboy and dealing with the changing occult world, as the Nazi occult projects fall into the hands of the Russians.”
Rounding out the bill on the latest chapter in the BPRD story is the always on-point, indy artist/colorist team Paul Azaceta and Nick Filardi (Potter’s Field, Grounded) on their third project together.

Abe Sapien Gets His Own Series!
I was wrong about not getting press releases from good ol' Dark Horse! Here's one now, in fact:
Hellboy creator Mike Mignola teams up with Eisner-nominated artist Jason Shawn Alexander (Damn Nation, The Secret, The Escapists) for a five-part miniseries featuring Abe Sapien, the second most popular character from Mignola’s Hellboy books, on his first solo assignment. Abe Sapien: The Drowning promises to be chock-full of adventure and suspense in the tradition of the most revered Hellboy stories.
A century ago, paranormal investigator Edward Grey fought and destroyed a powerful warlock off the island of Saint Sebastian. In the early 1980s, the B.P.R.D.’s special agent Abe Sapien was sent to retrieve the warlock’s remains. This simple mission turns to disaster and Abe Sapien finds himself alone against supernatural forces older than mankind.
“I realized recently that while we are learning a lot now in B.P.R.D. about Abe’s origin and the human being he used to be, we know almost nothing about what he was doing in his early years as a B.P.R.D. agent. I thought it would be nice to see his first case where he really has to work on his own, without being in Hellboy’s shadow,” says Mignola, “And I wanted to work with Jason Alexander for years and he’s the perfect artist for the weird atmosphere I needed for this story.”
