Holiday Hangover

I didn't get to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. I'm not 100%, but this may be the first year that's ever happened. At any rate, we weren't going to be able to get together, then we were, and then (at the last minute), we weren't, so I had literally saved a couple pieces of turkey sammich meat just in case and I ate that. Silly, but it was all I could do on short notice and I had an idea it might end-up that way, so it was an ode to tradition if nothing else.

I didn't do anything the entire holiday week or weekend, so there's no reason whatsoever that I should feel so... discombobulated. (What an apt word, that! Not one I get to use often, either... I hope I used it right!)
Yet I do. I think everyone does, a little; it was just too long a holiday vacation and it's going to take us all a day or two to recover and get back into the swing of things.

But, for as nice as it is to have a little time off now and again, I missed the daily routine! I always do. I'm glad to be back in the coffee-needing, Web-surfing, "Nothing's on TV" grind that really went on hiatus a week ago today.

But I'm gonna get drunk tonight.

Showbiz Rundown - A Reason to Like Harry Potter

Buckle up, chirrens:

  • Josh Herdman, who plays the bully in the Harry Potter movies, was scheduled to do a meet and greet with fans at the Collectormania comics and film convention in Denmark, but organizers say he showed up drunk "out of his skull," cavorted with a "half-naked" blonde, and stunned con-goers by drunkenly staggering about, abusing them. When hoteliers asked him to leave, he fell asleep on a toilet with his pants around his ankles, then jetted to a cafe nearby and demanded an ambulance (not necessarily in that order). Police asked him to pay his bill and leave.
Related news: Harry Potter film festival, my house, tonight.
  • Ewan McGregor is holding-up the Trainspotting sequel, Porno, because he thinks it's a poor sequel. Original scribe, Irvine Welsh, and director, Danny Boyle, have all signed-on to the film, along with the original castmembers. Welsh wrote the book as a sequel several years ago. The film apparently will not go forward without McGregor.
  • Kids in the Hall return to Canadian TV in a scripted, eight-part mini-series in which the cast appears as some 15 characters, including several from their original series. Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town airs in January.
  • Burn Notice has been greenlighted for a fourth season.
  • Lost Boys: The Thirst is coming straight to DVD next year.
  • Eliza Dushku has expressed interest in appearing in the Dr. Horrible sequel. Still shows utter lack of interest in appearing anywhere within 50' of me, refuses to lift unwarranted restraining order.
Remember, pregnant wimmins are not to handle The Rundown due to a specific birth defect.

Image United #1 Sell-Out

Image United #1Despite a significant overprinting, the first issue of Image United sold-out and is going back to print. While the second-printing won't be available until just before Christmas (December 23rd), a special, foil edition of Image United #1 will hit stands December 3rd.

Image United is a bit of a double-entendre: not only is it a crossover event establishing the cornerstones of the Image Universe, it is also the first project on which all of the founding members have worked. Generally speaking, each member will draw his own character(s), though the process hasn't worked-out quite that easily, as Erik Larsen tells Newsarama. Also, the majority of the comics are being drawn "the old-fashioned" way: by hand (as opposed to computer)! Though Larsen admits some computers are involved, by and large, all of the members are actually penciling and inking their characters by hand.

This is obviously a big event, and the mainstream press hasn't overlooked it. While we focus on the enjoyment of comic books, The Rundown would be remiss if we didn't point-out the collectibility of these issues! Still, above and beyond that, Image United is (as noted) the establishment of the Image Universe - who exists where in the same, shared "reality." Up to now, the relationships between characters, situations, and locations has been minimized or completely disregarded; while some characters have mentioned others, and so on, that's about as far as it's gone. Now, readers will know that Savage Dragon and Spawn are aware of one another's existence, for example, and that Spawn's Hell is the same Savage Dragon might one day visit.

And, of course, this is also your chance to see almost all of Comicdom's "rock star superheroes" working together!

Golf Champion, Tiger Woods, "Seriously" Injured in Car Crash

I read this a couple hours ago, but the piece didn't seem to make sense; it said golfing champion, Tiger Woods, had been "critically injured" in a one-car crash and "charges were pending." I'm not sure if that means Woods is suspected of DUI, et.al., or what. Later reports, just now surfacing, don't mention anything about charges, and have downgraded injuries to "serious."

According to what I can make from several reports, Tiger Woods left his home early this morning and, before he even got off his own street, struck a fire hydrant then ran into a tree. Woods suffered injury, but was treated at a local hospital and released! Authorities said they consider injuries "serious" if hospitalization is necessary. Further, alcohol was not involved, but charges could be filed (failure to maintain is what I would guess).

That's why I don't rush to "break" news, even though it would be good for hits.

Seth Green Hates Bloggers

"Really people who write on the internet are people who want to be told they're very funny or creative, or be given some sort of job opportunity, so the things that they write are never nice," quoth Seth Green, who was responding to "toxic" blog posts and comments about his becoming Butterfinger's new spokesman.

Ever out-of-touch, I had no idea Seth Green was in a Butterfinger commercial; I've neither seen the commercial nor heard anything about it online. I guess I could say something nasty about what he said, but I'm pretty sure he's on the short list for actors set to portray me in the movie I'm hoping someone thinks is funny and creative enough to greenlight. Or at least good enough that they ask me to write something else - like candy commercials! Cuz that's obviously where the tall dollars are.

Michael Moorcock to Pen Dr. Who Novel

Fantasy author and Elric creator, Michael Moorcock, announced that he will be writing a Dr. Who novel. The novel is the latest in the series which started in the 1960s, just as the show did. Moorcock said there are still meetings to be had and his submission will have to be okayed by editors and producers - which is "of course... understandable," he writes - but it is official.

Moorcock, a fan of the series since its inception, has been approached by the line's caretakers in the past, but for whatever reason(s), he says it only now "feels right." Michael Moorcock has written over 100 novels and his influence on authors such as Alan Moore and Gary Gygax is well-documented.

You Turkeys!

You probably heard that NBC banned the Glee cast from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but you might not have heard that Glee won't be coming back until April! The two things are in no way related, but I'm hoping to stir-up some stuff by reporting them together.

I'll be here; I don't think I'm up to anything this Turkey Holiday. My family's various work schedules prevent us from getting together and I didn't bother to buy anything to eat, so I'll prolly make a turkey sammich and call it a pie. Wha-at?

Well... I guess I should be moseying along. I got a shipment o comics yesterday and I may dig into them while I'm sitting around. I also found a major snafu on the site and have decided to make some sweeping changes which will take a while to implement. I'll be tweaking-around over there for a while, so be sure to check it out!

And Happy Thanksgiving! You turkeys!

Dark Horse Announces Terminator Creative Team

NOVEMBER 19th, MILWAUKIE, OR – In 2029, Kyle Reese will be sent to 1984 to stop a T-800 from killing the mother of the resistance, Sarah Conner. But before his future son will send him back in time, Kyle Reese was simply another survivor in a desolate future.

In a brand-new series, Zack Whedon (Dr. Horrible, Deadwood, Fringe, Rubicon) brings his sharp writing skills to one of the most celebrated sci-fi properties in history to tell the story of a man struggling to live in a world with little food, water, or hope.

Never before has the iconic character from James Cameron’s first Terminator film been explored with such depth and humanity. Readers will have the opportunity to follow Kyle Reese and his closest allies as they face insurmountable odds in a world run by cold, calculating machines bent on destroying the last memory of what it means to be a human being.

In a world wrought with Hunter Killer Drones, T-600s, T-800s, H-K’s, and a host of other, terrifying technology, a small band of friends must find a way to keep the Resistance breathing amidst an eviscerated landscape devoid of nearly all life. Kyle Reese, the father of the future, leads these rebels with only the slightest promise of peace and the most basic of mortal codes: never give up.

The two, three-issue arcs will be drawn by Andy MacDonald (NYC Mech, Punisher War Journal) with covers by renowned illustrator Massimo Carnevale (Y: The Last Man).

"It's an honor to be a part of the on-going Terminator saga, and to have the talents of Andy MacDonald and Massimo Carnevale helping me in bringing this story to life," said writer, Zack Whedon.

The much-anticipated first issue from the dynamic creative team will be released from Dark Horse Comics in March 2010. Dark Horse’s successful Terminator Omnibus Vol. 1 & 2 are currently available at a retail price of $24.95.

On Adam Lambert at the AMA

I saw the "censored scene" of Adam Lambert's performance at the American Music Awards without realizing it. I was in another room and I literally happened to peek-in at the exact "Big Moment," where he ground his crotch into a dancer's face. I wasn't really paying attention, so I don't know how long it went on, but what I saw wasn't really offensive, just silly. I don't know that I would personally have been offended by it, either way, so... whatever.

The controversy revolves around three, specific acts: the "simulated oral sex," Lambert open-mouth kissed his keyboardist, and he supposedly flipped-off the audience. ABC censored the "simulated oral sex" bit when it broadcast the show on the West Coast. Lambert called that "discrimination," based on the fact that no one censored Britney Spears and Madonna's kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Barbara Walters agreed with him when they discussed the matter on The View the following day. He does have a point.

Lambert also compared himself and his performance to artists such as David Bowie and Alice Cooper, and he mentioned "the 70s," specifically. Except that, when those guys did it, they actually were breaking ground. Further, their point in doing it was the show; their androgyny and actions were meant to intrigue - to raise questions, not make statements. There is nothing artistic about homosexuality - it's just a sexual preference.

Lambert admitted his performance was meant to be shocking, and that he thinks that shock factor is part of the entertainment. No one else seems to buy it, and many admitted (and alleged) homosexuals have castigated his nonsense in the comments across the Web. Lambert wasn't breaking ground and acting-out sexually isn't necessarily artistically shocking.

I never thought Adam Lambert could sing; I always thought he was a hack "stageplay singer" - someone who sang "theater-style." I had the lead in several highschool musicals, but I can't really sing, and that's what I have always thought of Adam Lambert. He and the press are eagerly pushing this whole "openly gay" thing, yet most of the homosexual community who bothered to respond online have called his performance and marketing package damaging to the community and "openly gay" movement.

What Lambert is doing would have been HUGE in the 1970s, but it never would have made it to primetime TV. There's nothing laudable about that, that's just history. Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Prince, Madonna - what those people did was break ground and shock through their art; what Adam Lambert does is just... gay.

Bluewater Commemorates Black History Month with Bio TPB

Black History: LeadersIn honor of Black History Month (February, 2010), comic book publisher Bluewater Productions will offer a special trade paperback called Black History: Leaders featuring biographies of leading African-American personalities.

"We live in historic times," said Bluewater president, Darren Davis. "African-Americans have reached the highest levels of government and the highest levels of industry. Our book is simply a testament to their achievements."

The 96-page anthology includes the unabridged issues featuring Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, and Condoleezza Rice. These biographies were previously published as individual issues of Bluewater’s biographical comic titles, Female Force and Political Power.

Additionally, the Washington-based publisher announced two other related titles to be released in February: Political Power: Nelson Mandela and Female Force: Michelle Obama, Year One. The Michelle Obama issue is the first sequel in the Female Force series. The first issue was published in January 2009. Obama, Year One is written by Robert Schnakenberg and drawn by Tess Fowler.

Political Power: Nelson Mandela
is that series' first feature of a non-American politician. This issue is written by Clay & Susan Griffith and draw by Pablo Martinena. "Mandela is a transcendent hero. We are thrilled to present his life story in this format and eager to expand the scope of our biographic subjects beyond our borders," Davis added.

The suggested retail price (SRP) for the upcoming trade paperback is $15.99. The individual issue SRP is $3.99.

e-Mergency

Remember back in the early 1990s, when all those nimrods (the ones who brought us the dotCom Boom, and later, the dotCom Bust) put "e-" in front of everything that had to do with the Internet? It was e-insipid, but so are those e-people. Most of them went on to manage American banks and auto makers. Anyway, that's what inspired this e-post.

If you have tried accessing The Cyberculturalist since, like, flipping Wednesday of last week, you've noticed it goes straight to a "parked" page on the registrar. That's because, for whatever reason, Google thought it was "spam" and suspended it. This happened without notice or warning, like I say, sometime Wednesday or Thursday morning.

About that same time, I received a fraudulent e-mail saying I'd made a purchase from Cartoon Network and needed to send my banking information to confirm. But, if I hadn't made the purchase, then I needed to download the attached program and run it to clear my account. Heh. "Clear my account" it most certainly would have!

I mention this because Google doesn't tell you why, nor how, they came to the conclusion that your site or blog was spam, they just suspend it and they're done. "Fuck you, whores!" Google says before it cracks the whip and forces you back to creating content to which it can lay claim.

However, I was having issues with the domain because it was registered one place and hosted on another. Long story short, that's why you landed on the old man page whenever you clicked one of the old links. I tried like hell to fix it - even called for technical help from my host - but could never figure it out. I had some idea I was going about the whole thing wrong (I was), but... it was just confusing because of the order in which things had been done and the fact that my host didn't want to help me set it up correctly through my registrar and vice-versa. Having worked technical support, I both understand and hate that: OTOH, the tech might not know my registrar's configuration and so forth; however, he's probably just trying to end the call. Like I'm really going to sue someone or whatever... Of course, there are a lot of assholes out there (look at how many people work for Google!), so I'm also certain somebody would.

Anyway, once Google told me I'd done a bad thing, well then figured out I hadn't, it erased all my settings. I tried correcting the whole mess myself, but couldn't figure it out any better at that point than I could before... I had company for the weekend, so I let the whole thing drift until today; I'm working on that right now.

After this, I have to call around to find the best price on DSL. Yay! I already know it's going to cost a pretty penny, though - my excitement is tempered by this knowledge.

Lucky for me Google's spam recognition is just as good as its search algorithm!

Tanta Gotta Lotta Content

Let's face it, I'm not entirely certain what a "Tanta" is. I think it's like a grandmother... or maybe a wooden cigar store Indian figure, but I really just wanted to sound all alliterative with a lotta the onomatopoeia. But all of that is called a "digression..."

Um... oh!

I am steadily adding new content to the site and have been since the Halloween roll-out. What's cooler yet is that a significant portion of it is in an advanced state. That doesn't sound right. What I mean to say is that it actually works, largely works like it's supposed to, and even looks kinda nice! Hopefully, you'll start getting the gist of what I've been saying all along:

While the vast majority of The Weirding is dedicated to tabletop roleplaying games, I'm a cartoonist by hobby and a writer by profession, so even if you aren't into tabletop RPG, I honestly think you'll dig just poking-around and I would love to hear your opinions. Obviously, the more time I spend there, the less time I have to spend here, but it isn't an either/or situation; The Rundown has always been part of the website. It just used to be the weblog for the whole site, where now it covers pop-culture, et.al., and The Wording is all about what I'm doing, what to expect, etc.

So check it out. Like I say, even if you aren't into gaming, I think you'll find there's some good reading and hopefully you'll dig what I'm doing with the design and my artwork. And, even if you don't, I'm more than receptive to discussing it with you. I love doing this stuff, I love making money doing it, and I strive to get better all the time.

Tim Burton's Tragic Technology Skins Now Available!

NOVEMBER 18th, MILWAUKIE, OR–The popularity of skins that both personalize and protect our modern electronic devices is growing by leaps and bounds. Dark Horse Deluxe, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics, and manufacturer GelaSkins have teamed up to launch a new collection of special designs for this contemporary platform, drawing on their longtime relationships with some of today's most interesting and respected creative talents. Dark Horse is pleased to announce that the first designs featuring the original art and characters of director and artist Tim Burton are available now.

Burton's career-spanning retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York opens November 22, 2009, and will continue through April 2010. Consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, the event showcases Burton's widespread influence on both artists and pop-culture.

Dark Horse Deluxe has a long-standing licensing relationship with Tim Burton for his most personal work - the fascinating group of characters created for his book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. The art and story have inspired a range of figures, toys, journals, and other collectibles that bring the characters alive, and have been dubbed the Tragic Toys for Girls and Boys.

The new products take the technological tools that are now ubiquitous—laptops, computers, cell phones, and similar electronics—and turns them into a hip palette for personal expression while serving the useful function of protecting them from wear and tear.

"We have been planning this new platform for some time," Dark Horse vice president of sales, marketing, and licensing Anita Nelson remarked. "We are proud to have Tim Burton's strange and wonderful characters as the centerpiece. We are so pleased he likes the designs and think fans will agree."

Holiday Headaches

Sorry for my absence the past couple days, a lot of appointments were rescheduled at the last minute and I didn't have time to set anything up here to cover my butt. Because of this, I'll work through the weekend to catch-up.

Don't forget to check the site for new content. Not only did I publish a lot of the Chill department on Halloween, I've continued to add new pages which I failed to get hung on time, so there really is a whole lot of new material all over the place. I'm actually going to publish some new stuff for Dark Conspiracy which requires me to update a lot of the existing content, and the newer editions have more links to outside sites, groups, and more.

Like I've said, I've pushed things around to focus on The Weirding more. I have so much content for it that I've never gotten published, in addition to the wealth of materials previously published on the GeoCities site (RIP) I'm tired of trying to "find the time" to work on my website when it's my raison d'etre. Especially since I don't get to actually play anymore, this gives me an outlet for my hobbies in addition to being able to share with everyone.

Hope you enjoy!

Errands

Hi guys, I'll be here soon, I just have a couple errands to run which take me out of the house. I'm taking the new laptop with me, but I couldn't logon to any of the (many, actually) wi-fi hotspots I found around town the other day; it kept asking me for a security key. I don't know if that was because of the networks' settings or my computer's, but maybe I'll get the chance to figure it out today.

Bluewater's Obama Comics Sold-Out, New Editions on the Way

Bo ObamaHe may lead a dog’s life in the White House, but First Pet Bo Obama is receiving star treatment as Bluewater Productions’ featured subject in a special edition of the educational comic, Bo Obama: The White House Tails. The comic book has sold out and the 2nd-printing is an expanded version.

Bo Obama: The White House Tails, a comic adventure aimed at pre-teens and younger, is releasing a 40-page graphic novel version of the comic that not only explains what it’s like to live in the White House as First Dog, but the history of presidential pets, the history of the executive mansion (along with a tour), and an overview of the Portuguese Water Dog breed. The book is written by Paul J. Salamoff and drawn by Emmy Award-winning, Disney and Warner Brothers artist, Keith Tucker.

“This is a book for younger readers,” said Bluewater president Darren Davis. “I don’t expect Bo to fight crime or solve the deficit, but for kids looking a fun read without realizing they’re learning, then this book is for them.” According to Davis, Bo serves as narrator and tour guide. This book hits stores for the first anniversary of Barack Obama in the oval office.

The trade paperback book, which expands the original 23-page issue released last September as Puppy Power: Bo Obama, will be available in book stores, comic shops and online venues in February 2010. Pre-ordering for Bo Obama: The White House Tails is currently available at several outlets and bookstores using the ISBN #: 978-1-61623-925-1

Author Paul Salamoff added,”I am so very pleased to hear that Puppy Power: Bo Obama sold-out its first run. When I originally wrote it, I knew that once people got beyond the perceived kitsch value of it, they would discover that it's packed with compelling educational facts about Bo and the history of The White House.”

In a related story, the special edition flip book featuring the biographies of Barack and Michelle Obama has sold out!

First Family: The Obamas, released last month, included the unabridged issues from Bluewater’s biography comic series Political Power: Barack Obama and Female Force: Michelle Obama. It featured a special wraparound cover and additional artwork not included in the individual issues. No additional printings are currently planned.

The suggested retail price (SRP) for the upcoming, “puppy-powered” trade paperback is $6.99

Ken Ober - Host of MTV's 'Remote Control' - Found Dead

Ken Ober, the host of MTV's classic pop-culture gameshow, Remote Control, was found dead in his home at 52. While the cause of death is unknown, the 52-year old Ober had complained of headaches and "flu-like symptoms" the night before, according to his agent.

Remote Control was one of MTV's first non-musical programs. I did not realize it had run in the 1980s; it started in 1987. It featured many young comedians, including Adam Sandler and Denis Leary, but mostly Colin Quinn. Daisy Fuentas also did... something.

While Ober also produced The New Adventures of Old Christine and Mind of Mencia, Remote Control remains his legacy. It was one of those shows that faded into the background of a lot of our lives; while not a forerunner in any category, it is undeniably part of the patchwork of American pop-culture. While MTV continues to insert itself and its programs into American youth's pop-cultural tapestry, Remote Control was an effortless addition in a time when MTV was still mostly about music.

Our condolences to Ober's friends and family.

WA Sheriff Warns Parents About D&D, Satanic Phrases

The Thurston County sheriff's department posted a warning to parents regarding their use of the computer. Among the many ridiculous claims - and there are at least an even dozen - the Thurston County sheriff's department groups together warnings about Dungeons & Dragons and "...satanic phrases, sexual references or a sudden interest in related hard rock or satanic oriented posters, music, etc."

I have no idea what kind of county Thurston is, but it's obvious from this nonsensical, inflammatory, and reactionary information that the sheriff's office employs stupid rednecks. Those stupid rednecks have since removed the page, but you can view it here.

Needless to say, this misinformation is fueled by 1980's "Satanic Panic." This reactionary propaganda is frightening and the people who create and promote it are dangerous; the Thurston County, WA sheriff's department is a dangerous entity which is attempting to incite the general public. Scariest of all is the fact that this misinformation is cleverly peppered into truthful information, giving it the air of authenticity.

Dungeons & Dragons is not, at all, Satanic in nature. In fact, the latest version is more "game"-oriented than roleplaying! Trade Wars, another "Satanic" game with which your kid might become "obsessed" is a computer game which is entirely different from D&D.

This is highly dangerous, extremely scary, stuff! Corrupt police and officials in Arkansas misrepresented three boys on the basis of a Stephen King book and the fact that they listened to heavy metal music. All three remain in prison for crimes they did not commit. None of the offending officers, "detectives," judges, or attorneys have been prosecuted; they have all achieved raises and promotions due largely to their misconduct on the infamous "West Memphis Three" case.

WA residents are urged to write their local authorities and request the sheriff's office personnel be terminated - immediately - before something awful happens to innocent victims whose interests might include tabletop roleplaying games, computer games, or heavy metal music.

A Little Routine Maintenance

Hi guys. I need to do some routine computer upkeep today (defrag, AV check, et.al.). I meant to do it last night and the electricity went out again - for about the fourth or fifth time since Halloween - so I didn't get to do it then.

Everything's moving slower and it happened quite suddenly, so I'm worried there could be a virus or something, though it's most likely (knock wood) just all the crap I've collected over the last few weeks. I last did maintenance about a month ago, which is unusually long for me (I do it weekly, generally speaking).

Anyway, there are posts coming out, so you shouldn't really notice much. I just thought I'd tell you in case I have to be away for a long time and can't get to your comments.

Female Force: Stephenie Meyer Sells-Out, Second-Printing on the Way

The Female Force: Stephenie Meyer graphic novel has sold out in a single day! The biography comic featuring the author of the Twilight saga, Stephenie Meyer, will be going to a second-printing immediately. "Despite our increased production on this graphic novel, our distributor ordered more than we had or planned," said Bluewater president Darren G. Davis.

Meyer, named USA Today's "Author of the Year" in 2008, is the first author featured in the Female Force series. The series, to date, has published biographies on such influential women as Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Palin, and Princess Diana.

The 40-page graphic novel collector's edition includes the history of Forks, the Washington peninsula town where her stories take place, as well as other bonus material not found anywhere else.

Female Force offers a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. The title has been reviewed favorably by the Los Angeles Times, Ain't It Cool News, as well as Booklist. Bookstores can continue ordering the book. The ISBN number for the Female Force: Stephenie Meyer graphic novel is: 978-1427641847.

Next month, Bluewater will be releasing a graphic novel of Harry Potter writer, JK Rowling. "Bluewater expects the same response. The book is tracking well for us." Davis added.

Cartooning in Stages

I learned something in Art class that I've never forgotten - something that really changed me: the more I learned about Art, the less I liked my own work. But, after a few years away from all that - you know, when all that Art knowledge had found some hole in my brain and secreted itself away from my waking consciousness - I looked back on my work and liked what I saw.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of my early work is exactly that: amateurish and fraught with mistakes, but it has real power - what it lacks in acumen, it more than makes-up for in raw passion. And learning more about Art turned that on its head: I found myself churning-out work that was technically correct, but largely void of power. It still bears a certain passion, but the passion is more for Art and the technique itself than the subject matter.

I never liked Andy Warhol until I saw some of his movies. I really dig his movies - he knew from beauty and strove for symmetry, and it's amazing how much of it he found without manufacturing it (well, it may have been manufactured to some degree, I don't know much about Warhol) - but somewhere down the line, however it happened, it was learning about Warhol that made me appreciate Art in the technique. That is, the process itself as the Art, not the finished product.

Of course, cartooning is all about the product.

So, when I finally picked up a pencil years after I'd turned my back on my cartooning dreams to become a rock star, I was pleasantly shocked by how well I was still able to capture a moment. Don't get me wrong, the first few days and attempts were shit, but within a week or so, I was able to render the postures and emotions I saw on the TV screen before they left my mind (I have lived far away from civilization most of my life, but that's another post) - within another week or so, before they left the tube!

But I jammed it all up by going back to the books to learn more about Art.

The same is true with writing and I've discussed that before. My early writing efforts are bad - technically weak, ranting and all over the place - but they are also imminently readable. In fact,I screwed-up the best piece I ever wrote trying to "fix" it. But now I write gooder. I'm still working on cartooning. Here's my point:

The first stage is all about the passion. Once you learn more about your craft - whatever that may be (though I mean a real Art, not a science or trade) - you will see all the flaws in your early work and self-doubt sets-in. But you need to know those things! Then walk away. Leave the learning behind, because you'll never forget it; in a very real sense, you already knew a lot of it, you just didn't know the terms. Go back to whatever it is that excited you in the first place - those comics you loved as a kid, the museum you loved as a child, whatever it may be.

That latter stage is where you come back to it with all the vigor and passion you had at the start, but now with an arsenal of acumen, real knowledge, to boot. Certain things will come flooding back to you, but for the most part, that knowledge is little more than the terms; instead of wondering what that "something" is a piece is missing, you'll see that the composition is wrong or the perspective is missing, or whatever it is.

The final stage is death.

Warhol Sale Sets Record

Andy Warhol's 200 One Dollar Bills, with a pre-sale value of $8-12 million, stunned Sotheby's auctioneers and set records when it sold for $43.8 million! This is the second-largest amount ever paid for a work by the artist; Warhol's Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) sold for $71.7 in 2007.

All-told, the auction exceeded pre-sales estimates by over 50%.

Cavallaro's Parade (with Fireworks) Nominated for YALSA List Inclusion

Parade {with Fireworks)11 November 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - Image Comics and Shadowline, LLC have announced their critically acclaimed graphic novel, PARADE (WITH FIREWORKS) by Michael Cavallaro, has been nominated for the prestigious Young Adult Library Services Association Great Graphic Novels for Teens Booklist!

"PARADE (WITH FIREWORKS) has received an immense amount of acclaim since its release, but the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens nomination is one we're most proud of," Shadowline LLC Publisher Jim Valentino said. "We've long felt Michael's very personal tale is the perfect fit in any library, and are honored to even be nominated for the booklist. We certainly look forward to any and all feedback we receive from the valued members of the YALSA committee."

PARADE (WITH FIREWORKS) opens in 1923, as Italy is pulling itself from the wreckage of the first World War while unknowingly plummeting toward another. The nation seemed to be holding its breath, and the slightest perceived transgression could result in violence. On the evening of the Feast of the Epiphany, it did, causing one man to choose between political standing and his very own family. The YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens nomination is, in and of itself, a prestigious accolade for a very deserving title.

PARADE (WITH FIREWORKS) TP (DIAMOND: SEP082265 - ISBN: 1582409951), a 72-page, full-color, deluxe tradepaperback for $12.99, is in stores now.

Late-Night Update

What can I say? I'm a night-owl, always have been. This being up during the day thing is a relatively recent development brought upon by my location; living in a town which rolls-up at about 3pm everyday forces one to adapt. But now that that is all behind me (he typed hopefully), my body keeps dragging me back to the late-nights. I'm scheduling entire days overnight now and just checking for comments. That's how I accidentally released a post meant to be published tomorrow (sorry again).

While I have made no real advances in the computer department (have a new computer, no dial-up modem; old computer won't even boot anymore, thanks to yet another one of the all too frequent power surges/outages this area suffers; and broadband this far out costs roughly twice as much as it does elsewhere), I did discover that I'd had the forethought and presence of mind to back-up my data a mere two months before the Vista machine was struck by lightning. So I'm basically back to Square One: I have the data I need, but no way to get it to you right this minute.

This, regular readers know, has happened every year since The Weirding went live and is the very reason I think some Greater Power doesn't want me to do the site. Unfortunately for me, I am driven. I really enjoy webmastering and design and am really proud of the work I've done - especially the strides I've made. I know I'm getting better and that propels me. Technical issues be damne

Cirque du Soleil+Broadway = Banana Shpeel!

Cirque du Soleil's latest outing is more of a story than their previous shows. According to the troupe, Banana Shpeel is not circus, not variety, not even Vaudeville; Banana Shpeel is entirely its own animal.

Of course, if you have ever seen a Cirque du Soleil show, then you already know this is true of all their performances! I have seen almost every one of them (on TV, never live - although I would love to one day see it live) and each is unique. A blend of circus, acrobatics, dance, and more, "performance art" is about as close to truly defining Cirque du Soleil as I can get. So I admit I'm intrigued by this latest show.

Banana Shpeel is the story of a cruel producer, Shmelky, who lures an innocent victim into his clutches with promises of fame and fortune. The audience follows Shmelky's victim, Emmett, as he meets a wild cast of characters, falls in love with the beautiful Katie, encounters the mysterious Banana Man, and tries to escape the evil producer's clutches.

A modern-day fairytale told through intense choreography and zany humor, Banana Shpeel seems destined to become one of Cirque's most polished works. If you have experienced any of the earlier shows, then you really must see this one. A new direction for the troupe, Banana Shpeel may shape the course of things to come for Cirque du Soleil. Imagine being able to say you were there!

Spidey Goes Rogue

Hollywood police were called by a victim who claimed Spider-Man beat him up! The cops gave chase, only to find no fewer than four Spider-Men milling about. They collared the first one, who said it was not him. The second proved to be the assailant. Though the victim did not wish to press charges, the man was arrested on outstanding warrants. The victim and his assailant knew one another.

Many people dress as superheroes, celebrities, and icons and work the Hollywood strip for tips from tourists. It is not unusual for the competition to lead to turf wars and violence. A few years back, the police called a "superhero summit" to quell tensions.

Oh, Bother: Disney Sued Over Pooh

Attorneys representing the estate of Stephen Slesinger have filed a case against Walt Disney for "improper business practice." Go figure. According to the suit, the late Stephen Slesinger signed a licensing contract with Winnie the Pooh creator, A.A. Milne in 1931. Slesinger gave Pooh the now famous red shirt and developed products based on the children's fiction character, then sold the rights to Disney in 1961. In September, a federal judge ruled that Disney owned the property. A spokesperson for the Slesinger estate says the family is owed hundreds of millions of dollars.

The first official book featuring Winnie the Pooh and the characters from the Hundred Acre Wood since 1928 was just released.

Dollhouse Canceled

I'm afraid the time has come, Whedon fans: FOX has officially canceled Dollhouse. While we reported just a short time ago that Dollhouse had been renewed for a second season, more recent word had the network's programming director committing to showing all 13 episodes, but not to another season. Most of us had shortlisted it for cancellation even before then.

I've tried to get into everything of Whedon's since Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it just hasn't happened. It may be that Whedon put his all into Buffy and... just didn't have much else to give? It isn't unusual; many bands have one amazing album, then slide slowly into mediocrity - each successful album having fewer and fewer songs worth hearing. But most of them continue booking gigs and making good money off that first, great album, and few have many regrets. It's very possible Joss Whedon has the opposite problem the writers of Eastwick have. It's happened to much better artists/creators, after all.

Whedon himself didn't seem too surprised to hear the news, posting on his blog that he was "grateful" for the chance to air the series and that he was off to pursue internet ventures and binge drinking.

Eastwick Canceled

ABC's Eastwick, based on the John Updike novels and the 1987 film (with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer), will not be picked-up, though all 13 episodes will air. It drew fewer than 5 million viewers last week. ABC has not announced its replacement.

Eastwick suffered from numerous problems, but its pacing was foremost. Instead of picking-up where the other works had left-off, it tried retelling the story from the beginning, leading to several initial episodes void of anything supernatural, as well as anything interesting.

Eastwick
's curse was bad writing. One of the first things neophyte writers learn is to show the story. Eastwick continually foretold, but rarely delivered. This is such a basic tenet in writing that I find it shocking Eastwick made it to TV! And the show did this with everything, not just the magic - with Darryl Van Horne, sex, the women's friendship and relationships with other characters, et.al. With better writing, Eastwick would have been a better show.

Update

Sorry guys. I thought I'd scheduled some posts to come out today, but they came out last night by accident. My new computer finally arrived... and it has no modem! The reason I haven't had broadband hooked-up is because we're so far out; installation and monthly payments are significantly higher than they are in-town. While I can write them off on my taxes, I'd still have to worry with paying it right now. Not to mention the fact that I spent all this money on a new computer with the express intention of getting the data off the old one and getting online properly, so I'm out all that dough without having solved either problem.

I'll probably just buy a modem card for the new laptop, but it will be several days before it arrives. I've got a lot to do before this surgery in January, and (obviously) things are determined to not go my way, so I'm still fighting, I just keep losing.

Haunt #1 in Third-Printing

Haunt #1 - Third-Printing Variant10 November 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - HAUNT, the sales record-breaking new superhero series conceived by Todd McFarlane and Robert Kirkman, faces yet another sell-out with both its first and second issues completely sold-through on a distribution-level.

"Getting this reception a second time around has us all very excited," Kirkman said. "HAUNT is having a tremendous launch at a period in time when the economy doesn't really lend itself to people taking a chance on something new. Not only did the first issue set a recent sales record for Image, but as of last week, the reprint and second issue are both gone despite very significant overprints. Todd and I are very appreciative of the fans and retailers supporting HAUNT. We hope to reward them back with years of stories to come."

HAUNT centers on a pair of brothers, Kurt and Daniel Kilgore, who act more like adversaries than family. Kurt, a secret agent, and Daniel, a less than holy priest, bond in a way neither of them expects after Kurt's untimely death. A surprise fusing of Kurt's ghost with Daniel's body creates a chain reaction, turning the brothers into the character, Haunt. While both distribution-level sell-out issues will return with new printings in December, earlier printings may be available in small quantities at your local comic book store.

HAUNT #1 3rd-Printing and HAUNT #2 2nd-Printing, both 32-page, full-color comic books for $2.99, will be in stores alongside HAUNT #3 (OCT090361) on December 2nd, 2009.
