Prophet #21 Available, Getting Second-Printing

Prophet #21Image has announced a second printing of PROPHET #21 is being rushed to press as back orders for the first issue of the Extreme relaunch continue to grow.

Kicking off an all-new era for Rob Liefeld's Extreme titles, PROPHET #21 opens with John Prophet awakening from cryosleep in the distant future on an Earth that has been inhabited by alien settlers. His mission is simple: Re-start the human empire. Critically acclaimed KING CITY creator Brandon Graham heads up the visionary new creative team on PROPHET, with up and coming artist Simon Roy (JAN'S ATOMIC HEART) providing the breathtaking visuals. The first issue features a painted cover by Russ Manning Award winner Marian Churchland (BEAST, ELEPHANTMEN), plus a variant cover by Rob Liefeld. The second printing cover will feature an all-new image by Roy.

"This is one of those situations where I hate to say something as glib as 'We told you so,' but in the nicest way possible: We did," said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "There's been review after glowing review, along with rousing endorsements from the likes of Warren Ellis – it's not a secret Brandon and Simon have turned in a brilliant first issue. It's always nice to be able to say orders on a book have continued to climb post-FOC, but personally, I think it's better to actually have books on the stands.

"We're going back to press on PROPHET #21 to help retailers grow their orders on this excellent new series, but I'd recommend taking a second look at orders on issue #22 and GLORY #23, as well. PROPHET only gets better from here, and for it's just the tip of the Extreme iceberg."

Added Graham: "I'm really looking forward to being able to do all the barbarian science-fiction ideas we've got planned for this series. The freedom Rob and Eric are giving us to take this character and run off the board with it has been fantastic."

PROPHET #21 (NOV110358), a 32-page full-color comic book for $2.99, is on sale in stores and digital platforms this Wednesday, January 18th, while supplies last. The second printing of PROPHET #21 (NOV118136) is now available for reorder and will be back in stores the week before PROPHET #22 (DEC110566) hits on February 15th.

The Return of Avengelyne

Avengelyne #1More than a decade ago, Image Comics founder Rob Liefeld (creator of YOUNGBLOOD, Deadpool) introduced a beautiful and vengeful angel to comics. She fought the demons of the 1990s, providing fans a story of good vs. evil on an apocalyptic level. Now, following in the footsteps of Liefeld, writer Mark Poulton (Koni Waves) and artist Owen Gieni (Sore Thumbs) are announcing a relaunch of AVENGELYNE for Image Comics.

"As with any of my creations, I try to marry the right creative team with a character, and after a long chat with Mark Poulton, I knew he was the writer for the gig," Rob Liefeld said of his decision to relaunch AVENGELYNE with an all-new creative team."

Mark has chronicled the adventures of a female lead in his Koni Waves series for the past several years, so he is a natural for AVENGELYNE. Artist Owen Gieni worked up the best samples I've ever seen. Both are ready to treat Avengelyne fans to amazing, daring, and controversial new story lines.

"We are all hard at work on the third issue, these guys are hungry and eager to deliver AVENGELYNE to a new generation of fans!"

"Rob is the reason I wanted to get into the comics business in the first place," Poulton stated.

"To be able to relaunch AVENGELYNE with Rob at Image is a dream project. Owen and I are committed to doing a lengthy run on the series that will define the character."

"Working on Avengelyne is truly a dream come true for me!" exclaimed artist Owen Gieni. "My goal is to do as long a run as I can, get better each issue, and to do it monthly! We hope to touch all corners of the larger Image universe, reintroduce a ton of Rob's classic characters, and create a bunch of crazy new ones. This book is a pure dream to draw. I'm in Heaven."

Poulton further explained: "The appeal of the character for me wasn't the demons or the scary monsters she faced, but the fact that she was fighting for redemption. She had fallen from grace and was paying for her sins. She's flawed. When you combine that aspect of the character with the demons, scary monsters, and supernatural world she lives in the possibilities for stories are endless."

The redesigned supernatural heroine, AVENGELYNE, will return to comics to continue her search for atonement by correcting the wrongs of villains the likes of Torment, an aptly named psychotic serial killer, and Red Dragon, who appears to have found a new human vessel. With this new characterization of Liefeld’s original character, artist Owen Gieni’s depiction of AVENGELYNE is not only sexy, but ready to battle all the plot twists that Poulton has up his sleeve for her.

AVENGELYNE #1 (MAY110432), a 32-page, full-color comic book priced at $2.99, will be available for order in the May issue of Diamond Previews catalog and goes on sale July 20th, 2011.

One Look at Rob Liefeld's Work

I offer up this deconstruction of Rob Liefeld's work for several reasons, only one of which being that it is humorous. I've discussed Liefeld in the past, but only tangentially, because I never liked the guy's work -- EVAR -- but once I learned just how much of a joke the general Web treats him, I kinda felt sorry for the guy.

The truth is that, when Rob Liefeld was at the top of his game (in the early 90s), I was in the vast minority, and I took a lot of shit for not liking Liefeld's work, so I went through 20 years of my life assuming I remained in the minority on this one (remember I only started buying comics again in the last five years or so; there was a solid decade there when I wasn't buying comics, and had no idea what was happening in the industry, titles, et.al.); it was only very recently that I learned how much the Web (as a general assembly) -- maybe "despises" isn't too strong a word, here -- despises his work.

Of course, it being the Web and all, few bothered to constrain themselves or their comments, and some of the "criticism" is aimed more at the man than his work. Although, having never personally met the guy, I have heard numerous stories (both from within the industry and outside it) regarding his temperament, almost none of which are very flattering. Still, that doesn't give me reason to snipe on the guy; his art, however, has always been shit. Sorry, but it has -- always. Again, I don't know the guy, I'm sure I'd be honored to meet him -- and there's a high probability that I will someday, and I would never say these things to his face (even though I know I run the risk of him reading them here, durr) -- but I've never been a fan of his work.

And lest some youngsters get the wrong idea, I was one of the first to be... flabbergasted by his appearance in a 501 Jeans commercial. His work was literally a bad impersonation of Todd McFarlane's, so I always wondered why Todd McFarlane didn't get the commercial. It was only later that I surmised it was due to the fact that Liefeld was probably prettier, and definitely younger. He was one of the youngest in the field at that time, IIRC. (Actually, Rob Liefeld was the first comic book artist to be paid $1 million; that was the real reason behind the commercial and all, but... you get what I'm saying here.)

I am pretty hard on comics and creators when I critique them, but I'm cognizant of the fact that it, like all entertainment in America, is a business, and the hard truth is that, at some point, you have to make concessions; getting a project to market means conceding to it becoming "product" at some point. So I never faulted Rob Liefeld totally. Someone, somewhere, at some point, should have sent about 60% of his work back for proofing/re-do -- or, at the very least, assigned a "finishing" artist.

Back in The Day, it was not unusual to come across "fill-in" issues which were out of continuity, often because the series regulars (the artist, usually) couldn't get the product out the door on time and something had to ship. They don't do that much anymore, thanks to the umpteen-million crossover events, hype, and total bullshit that has blindsided the industry these days, but I -- and everyone else who reads comics, I'm 99% certain -- would rather get a Shatterstar story that "happened sometime ago* - Ed." and wait an extra month for the next, regular installment, than get crap.

And though I haven't followed Rob Liefeld throughout the years, some of his newer work featured in this selection forces me to agree that he doesn't much care for the comics field -- not enough to get better, anyway -- which is a pretty telling comment on the industry itself.

Not for nothing, the post on Rob Liefeld's Messiah CompleX (X-Force) is still one of the most popular posts I've written here.

McFarlane, Liefeld: Spawn #196

Spawn #962 November 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - For the past year, SPAWN: ENDGAME has riveted readers with its game-changing storyline featuring the death of Al Simmons and Todd McFarlane's return to illustrating his seminal creation. In November's SPAWN #196, ENDGAME concludes with a bang as McFarlane shares art duties with fellow Image Comics founder, Rob Liefeld.

"I was looking for good artistic help, and remembered inking over Rob on his New Mutants covers back in the Marvel days, and most recently a little bit of IMAGE UNITED," McFarlane said. "I thought it would be a fun experiment to see what Capullo layouts, Liefeld pencils, and my inks looked like together on a handful of pages."

In the conclusion of SPAWN: ENDGAME, reporter Marc Rosen connects the miracle patient stories to the new SPAWN, Jim Downing, as detectives Sam, Twitch, and Rowand discover the association between Downing's awakening, Bill Winston’s suicide, and the Nortego crime syndicate.

SPAWN #196 (JUL090355), a 32-page, full-color comic book for $2.95, will be in stores November 25th, 2009.

Liefeld's Return to Youngblood Sells-Out in Less Than 12 Hours!

Youngblood #8 - 2nd-Printing25 February 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - Rob Liefeld's return to YOUNGBLOOD with President Barack Obama exploded with a nearly instantaneous sell-out despite a very significant over print.

"WOW! It's very exciting and a great honor to come back and the result be an instant sell-out for the book! I'd also like to thank President Obama for picking such a great new line up for YOUNGBLOOD, obviously he has the magic touch," said Liefeld. "That said, YOUNGBLOOD #8 is just the prelude to a much larger story. If you liked it, you're going to be blown away by the next issue in May. Given YOUNGBLOOD's status as a government sanctioned superteam, you can bet on our nation's newest President being involved from the very beginning!"

The YOUNGBLOOD appearance by President Obama marks the very beginning of Liefeld's return to his seminal creation. Starting in May, Rob will return to the book in full force, full-time, as he takes over the writing and illustrating duties to present a whole new direction for the team. This news comes on the heels of mega-director Brett Ratner (X-MEN 3, RUSH HOUR) announcing he'll be taking the reins of the upcoming YOUNGBLOOD feature film.

The New Era of Youngblood Begins Today

Youngblood #8[24] February 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - The bold new era of YOUNGBLOOD begins today as series creator, Rob Liefeld, takes the reins and reveals President Barack Obama's shocking lineup of the long-running superhero team!

"Since YOUNGBLOOD's very first issue back in 1992, the series has always had a real world, political connection by taking on such issues as the first Iraq war and really exploring just what it would mean to be a government sanctioned superteam," Liefeld said. "Bringing Obama into the picture is a necessary extension of YOUNGBLOOD's history and I couldn't imagine a better way to start my full-time return to the series."

YOUNGBLOOD began the Image revolution in early 1992 and was the first creator-owned comic book to sell over a million copies right out of the gate by bringing a whole new perspective to what superhero comics were capable of. Rob's creations took the medium by storm, influencing an entire generation of creators. It did it again recently, when Brett Ratner, the famed director behind such blockbuster films as Rush Hour and X3, announced he will be taking the property to new heights by kick-starting the YOUNGBLOOD film franchise.

Tomorrow's issue not only features a six-page back up story setting up Rob Liefeld's full-time return to the series with May's YOUNGBLOOD #9, but also an already much-coveted variant cover featuring our nation's 44th president. YOUNGBLOOD #8, a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in-stores tomorrow

Brett Ratner's Youngblood

Youngblood10 February 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - This past Monday, Variety announced Rob Liefeld's seminal superhero hit, YOUNGBLOOD, is on the fast track to the big screen - courtesy of Rush Hour director, Brett Ratner!

"Ratner is an A-list director whose blockbuster movies explode on the top box office charts and, more importantly, relate over-the-top action to the masses in ways no other director can. In other words, he's the perfect director for YOUNGBLOOD," Liefeld said. "It's taken me nearly twenty years to find a director completely in synch with everything a YOUNGBLOOD movie would require and it was definitely worth the wait. I don't doubt YOUNGBLOOD will evolve superhero movies in ways no one will ever see coming!"

YOUNGBLOOD launched Image Comics in 1992 and instantaneously created the creator-owned revolution with it's genre-smashing storylines and explosive artwork. The original series, now collected in YOUNGBLOOD VOL. 1 HC, presented a superteam like no other at the time - featuring superheroes as celebrities who had more in common with pop stars, actors, and product-endorsing athletes. Until now, the team has never transitioned to film, but they're currently targeted to do so by 2012, the 20th anniversary of YOUNGBLOOD and the formation of Image Comics.

YOUNGBLOOD VOL. 1 HC (AUG071974), a 152-page full-color hardcover for $34.99, is available now

Liefeld Illustrates the Apocalypse

Rob Liefeld is illustrating the Christian graphic novel, Armageddon Now: World War 3. Written by a pastor who is "theologically trained expert on interpreting biblical prophecies," Armageddon Now tells the tales of the End Times, beginning with the installment of the Antichrist as the British Prime Minister.

"We've incorporated bold, engaging graphics and a compelling story to entertain and inform readers of the coming days as described in the Scriptures," Liefeld said.

The books incorporate current events into the story, making it hard for readers to distinguish between what is based on "real life" and what is drawn from the writer's prophetical interpretations. But the creative team insists their aim is to tell the events described in the Holy Bible's book of Revelation in a contemporary manner.

Armageddon Now is being published by 12 Gates, a "cutting-edge, Christian entertainment" company formed by writer/pastor, Phil Hotsenpiller, Rob Liefeld, and Michael Gadd.

Pres. Obama Reinstates Youngblood Program

Youngblood #815 January 2009 - Yesterday morning, Comic Book Resources broke the news President Barack Obama will make his first major superhero-related initiative public during a six-page back-up story written and illustrated by comic superstar Rob Liefeld in February's YOUNGBLOOD #8!

"Obama re-instating the YOUNGBLOOD program with his picks is a natural, with SAVAGE DRAGON having featured Obama already," Liefeld told CBR. "And with YOUNGBLOOD having featured George H. Bush in its past, as well as a Saddam Hussein-styled guy, and YOUNGBLOOD featured alongside Dan Quayle in WILDC.A.T.s, and Bill Clinton in SUPREME, Image has a long history of involving presidential figures."

The Liefeld-penned six-page back-up story will see America's 44th President begin his term by selecting the next line-up of YOUNGBLOOD to protect the country after the team's radical changes set forth in Joe Casey and Derec Donovan's fan-favorite run. This leads into May's YOUNGBLOOD #9, in which Liefeld returns to the book full-time and President Obama comes into play as the White House comes under siege.

YOUNGBLOOD #8 (JUL082216), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in-stores February 2009.

Deadpool #1 - Sneak Peek!

To say I was never a Deadpool fan is misleading. Deadpool hit the Marvel Universe at exactly the time I was leaving it. I have the New Mutants and X-Force issues and I was still collecting at that time - but I was just collecting, not reading. The same is true of Gambit.

So, I do not know much about the "wise-cracking assassin," but I was none too impre
ssed with the concept to begin with - let's face it, comicdom is awash with wise-cracking assassins and one more mask does not a difference make. But I am glad to see so many of these characters returning... on the one hand.

On the other, why would anyone ever need to create a new character for the Marvel Universe? Ever again? Ever? I know Liefeld wanted to leave hi
s mark on the MU, but X-Force had already accomplished that, and even a cursory glance at the Marvel Universe would have provided ample wise-cracking assassins for use.

Whatever, just saying. Anyway, here's your sneak-peek at Marvel's Deadpool #1:

Cable #6 - Sneak Peek

Okay, I finally went ahead and checked IMdB to discover that yes, this is the 40th-Anniversary of Planet of the Apes, which explains why everyone is doing the ape-thing lately. Mad Magazine had an entire monkey issue and Marvel Apes hits shelves in September. The new Cable #6 sports a Marvel Apes monkey variant by none other than Rob Liefeld (to left)!

I'll be honest with you: Planet of the Apes is another one of those sci-fi classics I have yet to see. I've see
n bits and pieces of it, but I have never actually sat down and watched the entire thing - none of them! I will one of these days - it's one of those movies I would like to see with friends, anyway. Actually, I hope to catch it at a con one of these days - assuming I ever get to go to another one before I die!

Anyway, here's a little sneaky-peek of Cable #6 for your glorious Monday morning (or Sunday night, if you're up with us):

Youngblood #1 Gets 2nd-Printing, Liefeld Cover!

Rob Liefeld is back in the fold with a return to his freshman Image title, Youngblood. The first issue sold-out quickly and got a second-printing. This is an official Image Comics press release:

18 January, 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - With YOUNGBLOOD's return to Image Comics being reordered at an exponential rate, Image Comics has gone back to press to ensure copies are available for the foreseeable future.

"We anticipated a high level of interest in Joe and Derec's work on YOUNGBLOOD, but we were frankly caught off-guard by the amount of advance reorders the book generated as press time drew closer," said Image Executive Director Eric Stephenson. "We're thrilled with what the guys are doing with the book, though, and want to make sure copies are available for everyone interested in checking it out."

The new YOUNGBLOOD comes courtesy of THE LAST DEFENDER's Joe Casey and GREEN ARROW's Derec Donovan, who previously worked together for a sixteen-issue run on ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, while being overseen and featuring variant covers by series creator Rob Liefeld.

YOUNGBLOOD marks Casey's second acclaimed relaunch of an Image classic. With WILDCATS, Casey was praised for upgrading the original concepts with a post-modern spin. Similarly, YOUNGBLOOD's new direction combines the bombastic beginnings of Liefeld's celebrity heroes such as Shaft and Badrock with the more classic approach developed by Alan Moore, featuring new heroes such Johnny Panic and Doc Rocket and Casey's own sensibilities. In addition, a limited, black and white Rob Liefeld variant cover will be made available on as a 1-in-4 cover for retailers ordering the second printing.

YOUNGBLOOD #1 2nd (DEC078061), a 32-page comic book for $2.99, will be available in stores January 30th, 2008

Messiah CompleX, X-Force, Rob Liefeld

I read a fantastic little missive in this month's CBG about Rob Liefeld. For those who aren't old enough to remember, Liefield came out of basically nowhere in the early 1990s to become the highest-paid cartoonist in history - he even made a Levi's 501 jeans commercial (he ate too well to do Calvin Klein) - and then he and some of his friends told The Big Two to bite it and formed a little outfit called Image.

Anyhoo, this one guy said he went to a con and saw this guy sitting around, doodling, telling kids to bug-off. He walked over to the guy, recognized his work, and said, "I love your comics," the guy responded, "Yeah, I doubt you buy my comics" and walked off. It was Rob Liefield!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Priceless.

Whatever happened to Savage Dragon? That was fun and Liefield had improved by leaps and bounds by then (he always drew really weak hands); I'll buy your comics, as long as you keep treating people like that! Rock right the heck on, Mr. Man!

Anyway, Liefield founded a team called X-Force, which is still going over to Marvel and this here official Marvel press release has some information on that title just for Messiah CompleX fans:

The newly formed X-Force has found their target—the new mutant child—but with a surprising foe in the way, can victory be achieved? In New X-Men #45, featuring Chapter Eight of the sold-out Messiah CompleX, the mutant strike force battles for their very survival, while the New X-Men are tasked with a mission of grave importance that will determine their futures. But with the X-Men’s ranks depleted, X-Force engaged in mortal combat, Layla and Madrox held captive and Predator X on the move, the future doesn’t look bright for the forces of good!

Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on New X-Men #45 and all upcoming chapters of Messiah ConmpleX, as all released chapters have sold out quickly at Diamond. Once the deadly three way battle for the new mutant concludes, each side must deal with the life-changing consequences. Will this new X-Force survive their first mission? Who has the new mutant? There’s only one place for the answers and it’s New X-Men #45, featuring Messiah CompleX Chapter Eight.

Don’t miss a single chapter of Messiah CompleX.
