Christmas Plans
As you can tell, we're winding down toward Christmas this year because I have plans. As I stated on the blog there, I am not doing a first of the year update on The Weirding this year because I did so many updates throughout 2011.
I'm not saying I'm not going to be posting, just not that often until after the holidays. I have no idea what to expect during the year's taint - that last week before the New Year - but if there is anything to report, I'll probably get it to you sooner or later.
One of my resolutions is to do more reviews in 2012. Now that I'm caught-up on most of my comics reading - at least until this next shipment arrives - that shouldn't be as hard. Even if I can only do one every week or two, it's better than the hit and miss strategy I'm working from right now. Still making no promises, though.

Happy New Year!
Well, here we are in 2010. I know this is late, but I haven't had the time to really get here and do much the past few weeks. Also, I'll be out entirely from tomorrow through at least next Monday. While I may feel well enough (following my surgery) to post some next week, I am forcing myself to stay offline... as far as posting, social networking, etc. goes - I'm still going to watch TV and movies and listen to music.

My New Year's Eve Marathon-athon
Ah, pay TV. Were it not for pay TV, I would literally have a single channel - the local ABC affiliate. And with the cancellation of Boston Legal (see the Popular Content, at the top-right), that leaves only Life on Mars, which I haven't been able to find for about a month now. Of course, there is never anything worth watching on TV during the weekends - I don't care how many channels you have. I literally have 1000+ channels (several are satellite radio stations, but hey - that's entertainment content, so it counts) and never have anything to watch on the weekends - but I digress...
If you have pay TV, you are intimately familiar with the marathon - there's at least one on some channel or 12 every, single day. Holidays bring out the real programming genius in the suits and executives who run these networks; I defy you to find anything but marathons on holidays. And so it is with New Year's Eve, 2008.
I was going to go for True Blood, but I watched every episode like three times when they first aired, and discussed them here (see the True Blood tag on the right), so I'm covered there. Instead, I settled for South Park. It's over at Midnight (Happy New Year, 2009!), at which point the TV is scheduled to switch-over to the Entourage marathon. At the end of that, I will catch the last two episodes of True Blood - if I'm still up - and then it will be something like 7am.
What am I missing - e.g., what else is there to watch?
Well, there's the Elf marathon - that's right: 24 straight hours of Elf, which makes sense because it's New Year's Ev... no, it doesn't make any sense at all. There's the Yard Crashers marathon or the Clean House marathon. I could switch to The Surreal Life marathon, but even if I were being paid, I don't really think I would.
Further up the dial, there's the CSI marathon (there's one of those literally everyday); Sci-Fi has The Twilight Zone marathon, as usual; TNT is playing Walking Tall five or seven times, after which they're going straight into a Law & Order marathon (again, that's everyday programming). TRU has a Speeders marathon, while TBS is showing a Tyler Perry's House of Payne marathon; CHILLER is showing a Freakylinks marathon, while A&E continues its Dog the Bounty Hunter marathon opposite BIO's Ripley's Believe It or Not marathon.
National Geographic has a marathon of Dog Whisperer, while SCI is running a Survivorman marathon against the Military Channel's World's Deadliest Aircraft marathon, a few channels away from ID's Most Evil marathon and PLGN's Living with Ed marathon.
Disney is doing Totally New Year's Eve against [adult swim]'s Moral Orel marathon (right after Cartoon Network's 6teen marathon) - or there's a Spider-Man marathon on Toon Disney. WGN's got a Honeymooners marathon. Someone at SLEUTH screwed the pooch - apparently they're showing James Bond movies all night! Ha! A "theme" - someone missed a meeting.
VH1 only shows marathons.
I'm sure I missed a few, but I have a customized menu to cut-out all the channels I don't watch. Which I'm thinking needs to be updated...
At approximately $80-90/month, what more could one expect?

Some Clarifications for the New Year
As I mentioned, my New Year's Eve was thoroughly uneventful. I drank a bit too much, listened to music a bit too loudly, counted down the new year with my neighbor, then crashed and slept in the new year. So when I got up today, I was reading over the blog and then Dave Sim's Blog & Mail, then sauntered on over to Eddie Campbell's (which is really funny, btw), and I got to thinking about some of the things I have said here and how they may have been misconstrued, so I wanted to take a moment to clarify a few things:
I don't dislike Alan Moore or Dave Sim. I don't dislike Matt Maiellaro or any of the ATHF staffers. I don't really know any of these people personally, even if I have met them (even several times, as in the case of Sim) or corresponded with them. I am not an all-out Frank Miller fanboy.
Okay, yes I am; I'll own that one.
I completely love everything Frank Miller does. He is one of the few people I can think of in whose presence I would literally just be awed -- starstruck, what have you. I am not saying I would perform oral sex, or sex of any kind, on or with him -- that's going a bit far. MAYBE some consensual heavy-petting, but it would take a few drinks to make that happen. Or at least the promise of a few drinks afterward. And then what if he didn't call? I'm just not sure I can handle that sort of rejection at this point in my life, but I digress...
I do think this season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force is exceptionally bad -- I mean downright awful -- and am really dismayed by that. This season is to ATHF what The Black Album was to Metallica; calling it a "nine-inch nail" is an understatement -- it's the death of the art behind the Product and not the Product, itself. I don't even bother to talk about the show with others anymore. I actually feel slightly insulted, which makes me question my priorities and so it has become a sort of albatross, which is really messed-up because like, how shallow am I? What else goes on in my life that I should have the luxury of obsessing over such a thing to such a degree?
I do think Alan Moore is overrated within the comics field. He is great -- of that, there is no question -- but I think that his name value exceeds the value of his work in most cases. He sells books simply by name power and, while that's great for him and I applaud his success, I find myself most often disappointed with his work. It's not a bitter disappointment, but more of that sort of, "That's it?! Is this the lead-in to a new series? Did I miss a page?" Some will say that I miss the point and am possibly incapable of ever "getting it" because they assume I are dum. And I guess that's fair, but that's my opinion of it. I don't think it's his fault; I don't think he set out to do it. I think the industry and the fans did it and I could use a break from it. Like 20 years ago.
I think Dave Sim one of the most incredible talents in the field. He excels in literally every department -- writing, pencils, inks, lettering, pacing, characterization, I could go on for days -- but the guy holds some major views, and a bit of an attitude on paper. Of all the creators -- in any field, really -- Sim is one of the few guys I'd enjoy literally just hanging out with. I've done so a few hours at a time at a few cons, but I was just a kid (really a kid -- like 12-13, around in there).
Still, he had a profound influence on me and my work -- he gave me encouragement, graciously signed all my Epics with his work, talked in-depth about the pieces and told me little inside bits like who this character's face was and so on -- even more now that I have so many of the Cerebus issues and have been reading them. And I will say this: Dave Sim is one of only two, maybe three, cartoonists who has ever made me literally laugh out loud -- full-on, wide-mouthed bellylaugh -- through sequential art alone: no dialogue, no captions, no text (probably some sound effects, but I don't recall), just the deliberate pacing and set-up through the images and sequence of events. (The other was Bill Watterston and I threw Jack Davis and Don Martin a bone there, because MAD cracked me up as a kid).
It gets hard to be critical of others' work sometimes, but it's not just out of pettiness or sycophant..y-ism? or anything like that. I truly love the things I talk about and they often move me, sometimes for the good, sometimes in the bowels. I usually try to remain objective about them, but specifically because I love them so much, I often develop a personal attachment to them. I need a girlfriend or at least a bike or a boat or something -- something to get me out of doors.
At any rate, I just wanted to clear those things up so we can all start our New Year brightly. I have resolved to make no resolutions and I'm sticking to it, so far. (Fingers crossed.)

2007 Sucks Already...
Just kidding, really. It's cold and overcast and I'm smoking my last cigarette, so I already know I have to get out in the middle of this. Not to mention that my balance in my checkbook does not jibe with what the bank has, so I'm scared to write a check. According to the bank, I have plenty of money in there; according to me, I might have $5.00... and I hate that because I mentioned this to someone and she started accusing me of passing bad checks. Which, technically, I guess is true, but it's not like I'm intentionally bouncing hot checks or anything.
I still haven't found the discrepancy and they've had me over for going on three months now, which means
- Someone has a nearly $100 check they have not yet cashed
- I made a deposit I did not record or otherwise made a mathematical miscalculation somewhere along the way
You may have noticed some formatting discrepancies in the entries lately. For some reason, the new Blogger doesn't handle fonts very well. I use Georgia because I like it and it looks like printed text to me, but I've noticed more and more that it's not sticking all the way through the post and even choosing "Select All" and changing it doesn't get everything. Worse, according to things on this side, everything shows up as though it's all just fine, so I don't even really know when it's not right until I see it on the blog.
Anyway, just a little tech glitch I've noticed and thought I'd mention before someone else did.
I missed the freaking Charmed marathon yesterday because I was watching the Ab Fab marathon on BBCA. But, I mean, it comes on like four times a day anyway and I must have seen most of them by now.
