Updating Posts and Maintenance

It's been five years since I even looked at Blogger, so it's going to be some time now while I go through and clean-up. This means RSS feeds are likely to be jammed, old posts are going to rise to the top as I try to organize old content, and so on. I meant to post this warning earlier, but got caught-up in the holiday fervor and forgot

Actually, to those ends, I rescheduled some content because I really am doing a lot of updating, and needed you to know that; it's not on your end. They didn't have as many features nor were they organized the same way even five years ago, much less 10 and 15. And we've definitely been here that long! I still have to go through old photos, too, and there are several thousand of those, so pictures will be disappearing, along with old posts, links, et.al.

To make things even more confusing, a lot of the content I cover and will be covering henceforth is also pretty old (maybe not 20-years' old, but close). Because I've lost a lot of e-mails and insider access to comics stuff, I'm covering TTRPG until I get some things resituated; I've always covered RPG, just not always here. I'm also going to review some of the stuff I'm consuming, and I'm several years behind on everything. NOTE: You need both Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG to play the game, although Army of Darkness, WitchCraft, et.al., are supplementary.

As ever, I apologize, and am eagerly working to bring things somewhat up-to-date. Just because a company sponsors us or we like a product they produce, promote, or sell, does not mean they are in any way affiliated with us or The Weirding, et.al. All links open in their own windows and the labels system was a mess five years ago.

No Apologies (*)

In going through old posts, I realize that I have, at times, been particularly hard on some people (mostly celebrities) and projects (mostly shit).  No, it's true.

My views on a lot of things, especially political and social issues, have changed a lot, too -- some entirely. But I'm not taking down those posts and I'm not "updating" or whitewashing them to reflect the changes in my opinions.  I'm only updating them to cash-in on recent developments and popular opinion.

Those posts were written by a different person in a different time; a time which, in retrospect, may have been Big Media's Last Gasp:

MySpace was bigger than Facebook, which wasn't even available to the public until 2008 or so; YouTube had only been online for one or two years; I don't think Twitter had even launched yet.  Hulu didn't launch until 2008 or 2009 and Netflix still sent DVDs to your house because DVDs were still A Thing.  Blockbuster was still bigger than Netflix back then!

The 24-hour cable news cycle was in full-swing; streaming media wasn't even A Thing until at least 2008-2009 and didn't become a serious contender until 2015 or so; tabloid blogs were all the rage (remember Perez Hilton?); people still went to the movies because Hollywood made more than just superhero films; and chicks like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and (the real) Paris Hilton were fucking crazy!

I'd forgotten how nucking futs Britney went!  It wasn't just an off-color, or "tone-deaf," remark or two -- like the ones that kill careers today; she went off the rails for a while there.  Remember when they sent a chopper to Paris Hilton's house -- and broke into regular programming to show it in real-time?  Like it was an earthquake or 9/11.  They're Impeaching the sitting "President" right now and I don't think they've interrupted regular programming for that!

I don't feel bad for reacting to those things like they were the end of the world -- that's how they were presented!  TV, movies, and even cable TV were huge parts of American pop-culture, and our daily lives, which is how (and why) tabloids and sensationalized news stories about famous people got started in the first place.  I still largely believed things the talking heads on TV told me about war, politics, health, and other important issues, and few of those outlets had a notable online presence (and none of them should).

Those posts were written 10+ years ago and everything was different then -- including me.  I can't apologize for those things.  I started to apologize for piling-on to Britney Spears, for example, but I'd entirely forgotten about her skipping court appearances for custody of her children and serving her mom with papers on the set of her little sister's TV show.  Shit, I'd forgotten her little sister ever had a career (in entertainment)!

The things I felt, thought, and said back then were shaped, not only by the events themselves, but by the media, the constant coverage, the proliferation of tabloid websites, the mainstreaming of it all, and a thousand other things -- most of which I've all but forgotten!

I certainly did go too far sometimes, but who didn't?  That's not an excuse, that's just the way things were back then.  Remember Perez Hilton?  I was in competition with major players who had major backing from major corporations, all of whom went much further.  And, again, a lot of that was some unprecedented shit and the drama was ramped-up by the traditional media by at least 1,000-fold.

Hell, I sometimes go too far today and I'm okay with that.  The world's a fucked-up place and the morons running it are War Criminals with zero oversight.  Most days I wake up, I'm (pleasantly) surprised that people aren't running wild in the streets -- which would hardly be an "overreaction," should they start.

For those who weren't around then or haven't noticed, the "news" cartels have simply replaced pop-culture celebrities with politicians.  And blogs have largely been replaced by social networks.  Traditional media is still as toxic as it ever was and its effect on viewers is evident on social networks today.

Keep this in mind when, five or 10 years from now, you re-read people railing on "Cancel Culture" and "#[everything]SoWhite," because these things, too, will be forgotten.  Not the events or people, but the context in which they are taking place, and the things that are said in the midst of the fray will read entirely different once removed from that context.

So, if I hurt anyone's feelings or upset them, I didn't get their Twitter account removed or break into regular programming to show my chopper hovering over their mansion.  That's an important distinction.  Blogging, the Internet, TV -- everything was entirely different in 2008, 2010, 2012, et. al., and the context in which those things were written and those events took place matters.

I take full responsibility for the things I have said but I feel no responsibility to apologize for being fooled, swept-up by current events or my emotions, nor anything like that.  All of that just makes me human, and I can't really change that.

Adjustments

I am clearly playing with things, and likely will be for some time now.

Aside from new sponsors, I have a lot of settings and content to update.  I haven't been able to access the backend of the site(s) for several years now, and a lot has changed in that time.

I may well redesign the entire lot, including everything here, from scratch.  The Weirding comprises a number of properties, several of which remain unrealized to date.

Did you know that?  Were you aware of that?

A lot of the elements -- gadgets, widgets, apps, or whatever they'll be called next -- go back 12-13 years or more, so I have no idea if they even work for visitors with their FBCDN-Twitter-enabled, Chrome on Rails logins (even though I've tested them on several systems over the years).  I've also been considering putting together a (very infrequent) newsletter.  I don't know how far I'll get with any of this, so... that's a hell of a lot of work, and I don't ask you for shit.

Plus, I'm really glad that I don't.  I love this place.

You should stop your automatic contributions to such entities, who are wholly separate from The Weirding.  I run this entire website at a deficit, and have for longer than you've been around.

I never did a Newsletter because I have so many blogs.  Just follow the blogs via RSS or, better yet, visit The Weirding directly to stay apprised of any changes.  Besides, I haven't done anything to the site in years because I couldn't access it, so.

But I absolutely talk a lot of shit.  You'd sign-up for that, right?  Who wouldn't sign-up for that?

I would like you to check out the Living Greyhawk stuff I did several years back -- I'm actually quite proud of that, and I'm always surprised when I come across it (every few years).  It should be a breeze to adapt to newer d20 editions or other RPG engines.  Greyhawk is a really decent Fantasy campaign setting, in general, and I love that they opened it up to outside contributions.

A really long time ago...  I have a fuckload of original material for both Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms.  And also Chill, CoC, Space 1889, and a bunch of other shit.

Hopefully, everything looks and behaves correctly on your end.  Tell me if it doesn't.

Bumps in the Road

Regular posting may be spotty this month (maybe even into next month).  There were several big storms in the area, and some folks I depend on got landlocked due to a flooded road.  Because of this, my plumbing problems are still ongoing, and I had to shut off the water in my home entirely.  I'm turning it on once, maybe twice, each day to get everything done that I can, and it's very time-consuming.

I'm out of a bunch of stuff (not food, but things like batteries for my mouse, for example), and have appointments through this week that I can't reschedule.  I may be able to get things done, hopefully making this post pointless, but that all depends on things that are entirely out of my hands.

So, just in case posting gets spotty, I'm up to my eyeballs IRL at the moment, and things will return to normal once this is resolved.  Thanks!

New Laptop

I had to get a new laptop and it had issues right out of the box. I have to take it to a local area store but the closest store is about an hour from here. Still, I have to get it repaired or replaced and soon.

I am doing what I can with what I have but it isn't easy. I am having to use an external USB keyboard to type this, since the internal keyboard is malfunctioning. Right now, I am working with videos and there is a lot of downloading and uploading, which eats up my bandwidth.

I'll try to post a few things along the way, but it's touch and go for the next week or so, at least.

New Digs

I forgot to ask everyone how they like the new digs?

Blogger has introduced a lot of new features since we began and I'd been using the same template for at least the last four or five years, so this was a very long time in coming. I, for one, love the new look but that's just me. I'm terribly interested in hearing what others have to say.

I'm still tweaking things here and there and, like any living document, it is always changing but this is the look to which you should become accustomed for the foreseeable future. So be sure to drop a line and let me know what you think!

Bloggerdom

I am still around, you guys, I just haven't been posting much because visitors have dropped-off so sharply over the last few years. I've actually tried working social media a little here and there, hoping to bring a few more readers to the fold, but not only found that I was spending so much time doing that it left me little time to post here but also that people just aren't that interested in full-scale blogs anymore - or right now, I should say.

I also had some setbacks with my health over the last year or so, resulting in having to go back to the doctor's on a very regular basis, so that has been taking up a lot of my time as well. In fact, this cold weather hurt me so badly I'm thinking I may have to see a specialist.

Either way, when I have something to say, I'll be back around. The Internet World changes rapidly, so here's to hoping blogs come back into fashion sooner than later - I believe there's room for more than just soundbite-style status updates.

Introducing Me to You

First of all, I have to thank my absolutely fabulous friend. Thanks MOD, you still rock Babe.

Now to kind of tell everyone a little about myself. As ManoDogs said in his post, my name is Christine. I'm a writer, blogger, wanna-be goddess. I'm an old broad with a young heart, and a middle-aged woman with an old soul. I love life, look for the good in most things, and get a kick out of inventing weird theories. Oh, and I'm a total geek!!!

One of the things that most people don't realize about me is that I'm a huge fan of the old school Marvel Universe. I was reading comics before it was really a cool thing to do. But I remember the heroes from the 70s. I always wanted to be one of those hot females drawn in those pages. I was even Cat Woman for Halloween one year because I thought she was prettier than Bat Girl or Supergirl.

I believe in angels, aliens, and ghosts. That doesn't mean I've ever seen any of them, just believe in them. I think everything in this world has a purpose. I'm one of those tree-hugging hippies, believe in natural remedies and look for ways to save the planet, even if it's just in the smallest of ways. I believe in the power of love and think good music is the key to world peace.

I have a warped sense of humor, I usually have a strange outlook on the world, and I believe that many of the world's ancient legends have something real behind them that got the stories started in the first place. I talk to my writing muse on a regular basis, but she's kind of a snag and doesn't listen to me very often.

I'm a dork. I'm a dreamer. I'm a dingbat. But above all else, I'm me!!!!

New Blogger, New WoW Patch, 31 Days of Horror Returns!

Hi guys (and gals and all permutations thereof)! As you might have noticed, I've been kind of busy behind the scenes here, reexamining some of the communities and directories to which we belong(ed) as well as some of the sites, podcasts, blogs, and resources to which we link; I have high standards even if I'm lax in enforcing them.

I have also decided to do 31 Days of Horror again this year since I actually completed it last year. Any longtime readers still left around these parts may recall the lengthy list of failures there. I tried to do this unsuccessfully several years in a row then finally managed to get it right last year, despite writing reviews at a fevered pace right up to the last minute. That was kind of fun, actually. So I decided to do it again because I am apparently a glutton for punishment or something. And I actually want to see how well I perform under pressure again.

However, not quite as stupid as I come across in print or on the phone or IRL (let's face it: That would be impressive!), I have recruited some help this year - and for the rest of the year, to boot!

Christine Senter has been a personal friend of mine for several years now. I first met her on a defunct blogging community site and we hit it off. I also really enjoy her writing and think you will too. So, when I asked her if she'd like to review some horror titles for 31 Days of Horror and she told me she didn't really like horror flicks, I said, "Why don't you just write about whatever you want?" And she said, "Okay."

So please give her a warm welcome and get ready for a much-needed female perspective around these parts while I pick up my clothes, get all these food-laden plates off the floor, and turn off my World of Warcraft.

Oh! Which, by the way, just released the latest patch, meaning I will be away for a bit.

New Tools

Hey guys,

Blogger released a new interface last night and I'm trying it out today. I guess I'm switching to it, if I can get it to work right for me, because you can still use the old interface. I'm giving it a test-drive for the moment, but it's all minimal and everything's moved, so it takes a while to get used to and to find everything and it's slowing me down.

I'm also working hot and heavy on the website, which is looking so much better than it ever has in its entire history that I sometimes tumble through it just to check it out. I still haven't seen the whole thing under anything other than Firefox, so you may get mixed results, but it really looks great. The content is largely the same, but there is some new stuff there. Just because the main pages haven't changed (much) doesn't mean the interior pages haven't! Come to think of it, there's quite a bit of new material there, a lot of it has just been added to pages that were already present.

Anyway, if you're a gamer, you really do owe it to yourself to spend an hour or so touring the joint.

Okay, so I'm still figuring this thing out...

Sorry. I meant for this to post later, but the time and date is screwed-up on my scheduler and I hit "Post" anyway - 12:57pm on this thing is 10:57am over here. I'm not sure where to change that, but it should have been changed already, I guess it just didn't "port over" to the new service...

UPDATE

I switched back to the old interface and this is why:

I wrote this yesterday and accidentally posted it too soon, so I drafted it and tried to reschedule it for later in the day. I thought it had posted yesterday, but it obviously didn't. The time was off on the scheduler (it was two hours ahead of my time), and I didn't notice a big "draft" notice beside it.

Some of these issues are definitely just an issue with being used to the old interface, but some of them are real issues with the new one, and I don't have time to figure out this whole new layout and setup right this minute. I'm going to play with it over the weekend, but for now, I'm sticking with the old Blogger interface so I can actually get some posts out the door.

From the Vaults: Jeff Bridges on Tron Sequel, 2008

Here is what's cool about checking-out our archives: I was doing something completely unrelated when I came across this post on Jeff Bridges, talking about how excited he was for the Tron sequel that came out this year. Of course, we all know how that turned out, which makes the post all the much better a read.

I already know the problem is the tagging and Blogger's ironically bad search capabilities, and I've done a lot in this regard. I admit I've been lax about maintaining the whole thing, but it's an extremely large and daunting project, so please forgive me. I am trying to develop a system incorporating the new Pages function, but it is slow-going because it is not as high a priority as other projects on my table.

For example, I updated the Entertainment page over the weekend. Which is a great example: Though I screwed it up; you can see where the title is supposed to be before the text block... I am going to fix it, but it isn't that big a deal, so who knows when I'll get to it, meaning I'm likely to forget it then come across it weeks, even months, later and ... well honestly, probably do nothing. But I'll make a NOTE of it, which I will quickly lose... You get the idea.

Anyway, however you do it, I promise there's some crazy shit in here -- I come across it all the time -- so do yourselves a favor and poke around.

Time Away

I apologize for this week, guys. This blog, all of the blogs, have been my #1 priority for several years now, and I've let a lot of things go in order to maintain them, including my health. This week has been a weird one, weather-wise, as it's remained overcast and should have stormed several days (though it did not). As regular readers know, this kind of weather bothers my neck, which - although I had surgery earlier this year - still bothers me. In response, I've had to take more of my medicine than usual, and it knocks me out.

I've also had some bad congestion. The doctor prescribed me some sinus/allergy medicine, which also knocks me out, but I think the weather made it worse this week. It was 88° last Thursday or Friday, and didn't get above 65° the entire weekend. I rode the bike about 10 miles in the "cold," and though it really wasn't that cold, once you get to sweating... it's cold. I may have aggravated the whole congestion thing, and/or gotten a cold.

Anyway, I'm congested and my neck hurts, and I have put-off doing a laundry list of things around the house, as well as here, and I had to force myself to literally just relax, take my medicine, and sleep for a few days. Truthfully, I am not feeling much better, but I am back to work.

Seth Green Hates Bloggers

"Really people who write on the internet are people who want to be told they're very funny or creative, or be given some sort of job opportunity, so the things that they write are never nice," quoth Seth Green, who was responding to "toxic" blog posts and comments about his becoming Butterfinger's new spokesman.

Ever out-of-touch, I had no idea Seth Green was in a Butterfinger commercial; I've neither seen the commercial nor heard anything about it online. I guess I could say something nasty about what he said, but I'm pretty sure he's on the short list for actors set to portray me in the movie I'm hoping someone thinks is funny and creative enough to greenlight. Or at least good enough that they ask me to write something else - like candy commercials! Cuz that's obviously where the tall dollars are.

Blogger Burp

Sorry for the late start today, folks. It happens from time to time (yesterday, for example), but today was Blogger's fault!

I was up at 7am and was posting for later in the day (scheduled posts), but Blogger told me the "autosave" failed, then the picture would upload, but return an error whenever it was "finished." So I was going to add a note, informing you as to how I would come back in later and include the art, but then Blogger gave me an error as to how it could not publish my post. I got the message.

I tried to open Blogger in another window and it gave me an error message...

Needless to say, I was trying, but I was unable to do anything... So again, I'm just here to apologize for the late start. I think it's going to be kinda slow today, anyway; new comics arrive today, so everyone has their hands full with other things.

Kanye West Thanks South Park Writers for Chastisement

On his blog Thursday, rapper Kanye West thanked South Park writers and creators (Matt Stone and Trey Parker) for chastising him in their latest episode, Fishsticks. Kanye blogged that the South Park episode "hurt [his] feelings" but that he needed to "just get past [him]self."

West agreed that his ego has become a liability to his career, but explains that he used it to boost his ego "when nobody believed in [him].

NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

West's trademarked all caps posting is a good indicator, but he mentioned that he was sure there were grammatical errors and that's how fans know it's really him posting.

Kanye West explained that he is working on getting his ego under control and said he was sure the South Park writers "ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE." He then thanked them for the episode.

Avalanche!

I know. There have been more posts these last two days than some of the last few weeks! But I wasn't feeling well at all yesterday and slept as much of it away as I could, and - of course - that's when literally everything happened! I got to some of it last night and more of it throughout today, but I still have more.

So long as everything goes like it should, you'll get stuff throughout the week, even though I will be gone. This means it may take longer than usual for me to approve comments. I will be checking-in when, and as, I can while away, and should be back no later than Saturday, but I'm just reminding everyone.

Nightblogging

Last night may have done it; by not fighting and just going with the flow (Circadian rhythms and all that), I think I may have finally gotten my days and nights switched back around. I woke up a little after 9a and didn't feel like going right back to sleep, so that's a good sign.

Oh, but I really wanted to know if you liked the overnight posts or preferred them to be released throughout the day like normal people's. I mean, there will be occasions where I will be forced to blog whenever I happen to have the time and etc., but I mean just in general.

The Downside to Semi-Success

It is far from accurate to say, after some 10 years, I am finally a "success," but with the recent traffic both The Rundown and The Weirding have seen, I find it fair to say there has been a small surge of interest, as late. And that is not without its downside.

Last week, I had a 22-hour day followed by an 18-hour day. I have not been eating very well, as I have not taken the time to actually cook anything, and I haven't showered since the weekend... That's not "TMI," that's the reality I'm facing!

I was asked to guest on a popular blog, am putting together a contest so I can share some swag with all y'all this Spring, am trying to keep up with the other blogs, and try to finish the original content for the site while simultaneously tweaking what's already in place. And keep up with the quickly sinking ship what is my personal financial position! Further, having learned that the template we have in place here may be hurting our standing in the search engines (due to coding errors - it was ported from a WordPress template), and wanting to take advantage of Blogger's new "gadgets" feature, it look like I'm going to have to spend some time dealing with all of that, as well.

I'm also thinking of changing the name. Just for the record, we had this name since at least 2003 and most of the rundown domains (which were already taken) started appearing only after we became a (very) modest hit back in 2006 or so. Still, it wasn't like I put a whole lot of thought into the whole thing; when I first started "blogging," I used bulleted lists to "rundown" stuff I found interesting - that consisted of basically every entry up to a certain point, when I did a full review or rant of some kind and gravitated away from that format. Unlike the talentless, cutthroat businessmen who scavenge the Web, I'm not about fighting over "keywords" and crap like that, but no matter what I change the name to - regardless of how original - it will soon be seized-upon by (butt)pirates and squatters, so it's not a major priority. Never has been and that's why I "settled" on this one.

Always remember the original Rundown has two things you will find almost nowhere else online: originality and talent. So what's in a name?

I sincerely wish I could afford to hire someone else or knew some tech-savvy someone who was as passionate about Nerdery as I am - and is reliable. Unfortunately, there is only me to handle all of these things, and I only have so much time. This is not just a lamentation; I'm saying you're just going to have to deal with things being kinda slow for the time-being. More Technical Difficulties

Well, I was working on a particular post which led me to another article, which led to another (as such research often does). To make it as short as possible, I was going to bring you a story when I saw that I could possibly bring you better coverage by reading the supporting links within an article I was reading, and when I got to it, I realized there were actually two stories there, and was deciding whether to run them separately or make one, rambling piece of them, when I crossed something else which got me to wandering... and I wandered upon a blog which had scraped my entire Boston Legal post!

Understandably (from my POV), I take such things quite seriously, and I know how to fight and report them. Unfortunately, many of the original watchdogs I once depended on have long since folded-up, and the methods already employed obviously didn't dissuade this piece of shit, so I had to stop what I was doing and research this new development...

I will have more on this over to Weird Ink (probably Monday), but for now, I have already tried contacting this little bitch, but she cleverly disabled all comments, hid her e-mail, and so on. I can find out precisely who she is and where she's from, etc. (which I plan to do following this), so she's fresh out of luck if she thinks her highschool hack3r ski11s are going to save her accounts, but it's a lot more than that - it's the point of the whole thing as much as anything else.

Anyway, this is just how my days typically are. You can see why I rarely accomplish much.
