DeGeneres, DioGuardi Out of American Idol?

Ellen DeGeneres announced that she will not be returning to American Idol. The last season was DeGeneres' first, but said she told producers and Fox she did not feel American Idol was "the right fit" for her, and that she found judging the participants "hard." Ellen DeGeneres ends her tenure after only one season, but is rumored to have originally signed-on for a five-year stint.

Sources are now saying songwriter and panel judge, Kara DioGuardi is also leaving the show, but apparently this is Fox' and American Idol's decision, not hers. DioGuardi's contract is up and will not be renewed.

All manner of replacements are being bandied about, from Jennifer Lopez to Sir Elton John, but nothing has been confirmed as of the time this post was written.

Troublemaker Pwns @ Comic-Con

Troublemaker SigningJULY 27, SAN DIEGO, CA—Last week, 14-time number-one, best-selling author Janet Evanovich’s first-ever graphic novel, Troublemaker, saw a much-anticipated worldwide English-language release.

Troublemaker is available everywhere, from department stores to bookstores and comic shops across the U.S., making the title one of the most widely-distributed the company has published without any Hollywood tie-ins.

Co-written by daughter Alex Evanovich, Troublemaker is the continuation of the popular Barnaby series, which features the high-stakes misadventures of the main character, Alex Barnaby; NASCAR driver Sam Hooker; and, of course, Beans, the Saint Bernard. The third book in the series, this exciting new volume delivers more fast cars, fast-paced action, and steamy romance.

“I’ve loved comics all my life and it’s really exciting to be working with Dark Horse to produce my very own graphic novel,” said Janet Evanovich. “I’m also excited that I could do this with my daughter Alex (the family comicaholic).”

“This is a groundbreaking project in which Janet and Alex are telling the third chapter of an established prose series in graphic-novel format,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “We feel that this book will open up the characters to a brand-new audience, as well as expanding the authors’ fan base.”

In celebration of the release, both Janet and Alex Evanovich attended San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, appearing on the company’s publishing panel on Friday, and signing in the Dark Horse booth later that day. Janet and Alex greeted hundreds of excited fans, and hosted one of the largest crowds of the convention.

Additionally, the two appeared at the Barnes & Noble in the Mira Mesa Market Center, and drew an even larger crowd of fans who could not attend the convention.

Janet and Alex Evanovich’s Troublemaker Volume 2 arrives in November.

Working on New Mail System

Let me apologize to everyone; we are working on establishing a system for collaboration, and e-mail is an important part of that system. Needless to say, The Weirding does not have the thousands of dollars it would cost to supply everyone with MS Office, and we wouldn't use it anyway unless it were free/shareware. Most of the site and blogs have been created using free/share -ware and we aren't going to turn our backs on that; we feel it's important to support independent creators and programmers, like ourselves. We may eventually breakdown and use Google's utilities, but regular readers already know how I feel about Google -- they have continually abused this blog, and this blogger, and I'm not willing to get re-involved with them (I know Blogger is also owned by Google, but shit... what isn't?).

Anyway, we are testing a program called Zimbra Desktop, chosen for its many collaborative features, including shared calendar. I'll eventually review it on The Cyberculturalist, but it bears mentioning here because I screwed-up a setting which told Zimbra to download all the messages and remove them from the server, meaning it deleted all the messages from the old e-mail program, which I am still using while I test-drive Zimbra. Because it is vastly different from Thunderbird, I'm having a heck of a time relocating the ones I need.

Anyway, we'll get things back to "normal" eventually, but we missed some press releases and e-mails along the way which I am just now finding -- some of which go all the way back to May! I must have had something set wrong in Tbird, so I guess it's a mixed blessing, but we'll get things straightened-out eventually, and once we get a collaborative system down pat, we'll be able to bring you a lot more original content, as well as stay on top of everything else!

What's Up, Doc? Bugs Bunny Turns 70

A Wild Hare is considered by most to be Bugs Bunny's first film appearance, though he wasn't named until the next cartoon short, Elmer's Pet Rabbit. A Wild Hare is also the first appearance of Bugs' arch-nemesis, Elmer Fudd. Both characters' catchphrases were uttered for the first time in this short ("Ehh,what's up, doc?" and "Be vewy, vewy quiet: I'm hunting wabbits!") and the designs for each were established, along with their voices and personalities.

While animators refined Bugs' appearance in later shorts, Elmer Fudd would undergo extreme modifications only to return to the general appearance first shown in A Wild Hare. The short was nominated for an Academy Award, against Puss Gets the Boot, the first Tom & Jerry cartoon, but both lost.

Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd both turned 70 yesterday -- July 27th, 2010.

$45 Garage Sale Purchase of Ansel Adams Photos Worth $200 million

A Fresno, California man who enjoys yard-saling (as we call it down here, or at least my family did) bought a box of Ansel Adams' glass negatives at a garage sale about a decade ago. The man holding the sale wanted $70 for them, but Rick Norsigian haggled him down to $45. The man told him he had bought them in the 1940s at a warehouse salvage in Los Angeles. Experts say these are the Ansel Adams negatives believed to have been destroyed in a fire, and some of them do bear fire damage. But, more importantly (to Rick Norsigian, at least), they say the negatives are worth a staggering $200 million!

Ansel Adams is one of the most important and influential American photographers in history, largely known as the "father" of American photography. The images will be unveiled today in Beverly Hills.

Coca-Cola Accused of Attracting Children with Porn

Coca-Cola was accused of what amounts to corruption of a minor when a Facebook advertising campaign for Dr. Pepper referred to the "2 Girls, 1 Cup" YouTube video -- which is disturbingly pornographic -- on a 14-year-old, British girl's account. When the girl read the message, she searched for the video. When her mom found out about the whole thing, she was "absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust," as she posted on Mumsnet, a social network for parents. She asked Coca-Cola for an apology and full explanation.

The campaign allowed users to sign-up with Coca-Cola (Dr. Pepper), which then sent embarrassing status updates from their accounts. A winner was to be announced and awarded a cash prize. The corporation said it is looking into what happened, but one of the other status updates from the campaign was, "Never heard it described as cute before." Coca-Cola admits that they had approved the offending message without realizing its true nature.

Coca-Cola offered the mom a hotel room and tickets to a live show, which she refused.

Linda Hamilton is Chuck's Mom

Chuck's long-lost mother is coming home -- and she is none other than Linda Hamilton of Terminator fame! That's right: Linda Hamilton is mom to both Chuck and John Connor! Chuck's producers said the decision was largely made by us netizens: "The fans put it out there and she heard about it and was like, 'I heard I'm Chuck's mom,'" Josh Schwartz told Comic-Con.

Hamilton's role is going to be "a huge part" of season four, and she will be introduced briefly in the season premiere, which also features Olivia Munn in a guest role. Chuck airs Monday nights on NBC, and on Hulu for a limited time after it first airs.

Stabbing Halts Comic-Con

Comic-Con panels were halted yesterday while one man was arrested and another hospitalized after a dispute over seating lead to a stabbing. Police say one male Comic-Con attendee stabbed the other in the eye socket with a pen. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital. Police say con-goers had detained the alleged stabber, who was arrested. Police were already inside the convention area.

The incident occurred before Universal Studios' panels on Paul and Cowboys and Aliens. Many con-goers had stood in line all night to attend the panels. Attendees stood on their chairs to watch the events unfold as organizers pleaded with them to take their seats and allow medics and police to come through. They tried showing a reel of previews, but the crowd booed. Comic-Con officials expected panels to be delayed by about an hour, but they were able to get back on schedule fairly quickly.

Dark Horse's Heart Transplant Takes on Bullying

JULY 13, MILWAUKIE, OR– Andrew Vachss has spent his entire adult life on the front lines of the child-protection war. He worked as an investigator/interviewer, went on a mission to war-torn Biafra (now Nigeria), and ran a maximum-security prison for "aggressive-violent" youths. For the past 25 years, he has been an attorney in private practice, representing child and youth exclusively. Perhaps most well-known for his best-selling crime-fiction novels, Vachss also serves on the Advisory Board of the National Association to Protect Children, and consults widely in his area of expertise, including international presentations.

Frank Caruso has spent his adult life communicating through art. He's illustrated children's books for St. Martin's Press, served as Executive Producer for American Public Television's Emmy award-winning SeeMore's Playhouse, and is best known for his work on properties like Popeye and Betty Boop, as the Vice President of Creative Services for King Features Syndicate. Caruso has worked with Scholastic's Alliance for Young Artists and Writers and is a member of New York's Society of Illustrators.

Now the two are collaborating on Heart Transplant, a book that uses images and words to tell a story -- a story meant to change the way we think about, talk about, and deal with the issue of bullying. Dr. Joel A. Dvoskin, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Univeristy of Arizona Medical School, and President of the American Psychological Association's Law Society division, says of Heart Tranplant, "[T]his gripping story gives kids and grownups alike a road map to change, both for individual kids and, more importantly, for the school as a community. This book should be required reading in every elementary school in America."

Dr. Dvoskin's sentiments are echoed by Dr. Bruce D. Perry, Senior Fellow at the ChildTrauma Academy and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine: "Teachers and parents will find that Heart Transplant can be the perfect lens to focus meaningful dialogue about the origins of bullying and the pervasive nature of the exploitation of power in our society. The scope of important, inter-related themes that this work highlights is broad -- so this can be... used for much more than merely addressing bullying."

Heart Transplant is anchored by an essay from Zak Mucha, LCSW, to help readers of all ages understand the important lessons contained within. This is the story of not only one child’s personal experience with feelings of alienation and torment at the hands of his peers, but a young boy's transformation from bullied "outsider" to true manhood. This thought-provoking work speaks directly to bullied children and their parents, providing not only the basis for discussion, but a viable solution.

Personally edited by Dark Horse Founder and President Mike Richardson, Heart Transplant -- a 100-page hardcover -- arrives in stores in October.

David Boreanaz Sued for Sexual Harassment

Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum, David Boreanaz, is no Angel; having just admitted to infidelity, an actress has now filed suit against the actor for sexual harassment. Kristina Hagan, who appeared as an extra on Bones last season, claims Boreanaz attempted to kiss and fondle her numerous times. She also claims that, after she pushed the actor away, he masturbated in front of her.

Interestingly, the actress claims she continued to find herself in private situations with the actor because he promised her a recurring role which never materialized. Boreanaz' publicist said, "The allegations... are totally fabricated and absurd."

Now you know why the show is called Bones. HAHAHAha ha. Ahem.

Comic-Con Nerds Overwhelm Westboro Baptist Church

The hate-mongering Westboro Baptist Church said it would protest the 2010 Comic-Con because convention attendees and comic book readers in general practice idolatry. "Reverend" Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, quoted Isaiah 2:8-9 as the basis for the Church's demonstration. Before the Renaissance, art and inventions were eschewed, as they were "acts of Creation" and God was the one and only Creator; to create one's own work(s) was considered an affront to God. Phelps did not think this through as deeply, and I sincerely doubt he has any measure of historical knowledge; he's just an asshole.

And only three assholes from the Westboro Baptist Church showed-up to protest the 2010 Comic-Con. More than 100 Comic-Con attendees and assorted nerds launched a counter-protest across the street, bearing signs and T-shirts which read, "God Loves Gay Robin," "Superman Died for Your Sins," and similar messages.

The extended Phelps family comprises almost the entirety of the Westboro Baptist Church's congregation.

Darth Vader Robs Bank

Times are tough for everyone, including Sith Lords. Police say a man dressed as Darth Vader robbed a Chase Manhattan bank Thursday. Vader brandished a gun, which he waved around and used to threaten tellers. One customer thought the outfit was a joke and tried talking to the robber, but Vader threw him to the ground. He was the only one hurt.

Darth Vader made a nice score, but police do not know exactly how much he stole. They have no suspects, but say Darth Vader was wearing camouflage pants and a blue cape, in addition to his black helmet.

Death stars are not cheap, folks.

Dark Horse to Unveil Turok, Son of Stone at Comic-Con

JULY 21, SAN DIEGO, CA–Building on the success of the Dark Horse Gold Key line, today the Company announced that it would provide the comic world with the very first look at the highly-anticipated Turok, Son of Stone® comic at this week’s Comic-Con International 2010 in San Diego, CA. News of the line was first announced at Comic Con International 2009, and fans have been anxiously awaiting details ever since.

Perhaps the best-known character in the iconic Gold Key line, Turok has been highly visible in the public eye in recent years, following its incredibly successful video game franchise, as well as the acclaimed feature length animated, Turok: Son of Stone.

Now, Turok returns to the comic book world, helmed by comic book veteran, Jim Shooter, with art by Eduardo Francisco (Mass Effect: Incursion), and incredible covers by Raymond Swanland (Magnus: Robot Fighter, Aliens vs. Predator), arriving in your local comic shop this October.

This is a story about about a fearless man who will find a way. I love this series."

Drokk it! New Judge Dredd Movie in the Works?

Karl UrbanIs Mega City ready for New Zealand actor Karl Urban?

Information posted on various sites yesterday say that Karl Urban will be offered the helmet of Mega City's number one badass, Judge Dredd, in an upcoming film based on the comics. The 3D screenplay is being penned by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and is set to be directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point).

Unlike the 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Karl Urban will not remove the iconic helmet during the movie, just as Dredd himself has never done in the comics.

Judge Dredd will begin filming later this year and be in theaters next year or early 2012.

Wiedlin, Morrison Offer Comic-Con Exclusive Lady Robotika

Lady Robotika #1Lady Robotika's Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Gos) and Bill Morrison (The Simpsons, Futurama) will be on-hand to autograph and discuss their new series, as well as the Comic-Con exclusive, limited edition, Lady Robotika #1 issue (cover by Jim Silke -- featured). Like I said, I'm not posting the entire schedules this year; you can find those on the companies' websites.

Lady Robotika is an existential, possibly absurdist, sci-fi comedy which is more comedic than sci-fi, or sexy, or anything else. Most of the first issue is exposition and it isn't handled very well. Definitely interesting, and recommended for collectors, but your average superhero comics fan probably isn't going to like it very much.

WHO:
Lady Robotika, the inter-galactic rock 'n roll sexy cyborg heroine, is the brainchild of Jane Wiedlin (legendary guitarist for the Go-Go's) and Bill Morrison (Eisner Award-winning creator behind The Simpsons Comics, Futurama Comics, Roswell, Little Green Man, and Heroes Anonymous). The new super-heroine debuted last week to great reviews with Lady Robotika issue #1: "Slaveship to the Stars!"

Grammy Award-winning album art director, and famed comic and pin-up artist, Jim Silke, has created a limited-edition convention-exclusive Lady Robotika cover for "Slaveship to the Stars!," available for the first time during San Diego Comic-Con at the Image Comics booth for $10.

WHAT:
Jane Wiedlin, Bill Morrison, and Jim Silke will be attending San Diego Comic-Con, hosting Lady Robotika autographing/meet & greets, attending various parties/events, and closing out the weekend with a bash at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood.

WHEN & WHERE:

EmiTown

EmiTownIn October, Image Comics publishes the first collected work of fresh new talent Emi Lenox

Berkeley, CA - 21 July 2010 - Emi Lenox has taken diary comics to a whole new level with EMITOWN, a breathtaking series of vignettes that document the travails of daily life, from the mundane to the miraculous. Image Comics is proud to present the first EMITOWN collection, which will be available this October.

"EMITOWN was my challenge to draw everyday and also my way to record all the little moments that made me laugh, cry, or downright frustrated," says Portland, Oregon-based Lenox. "I never thought it would one day be a book, and I am so excited to work with Image to make it happen! EMITOWN feels right with Image."

"One of the things we pride ourselves on here at Image is seeking out new voices and giving them a chance to shine," adds Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Writer Jamie S. Rich turned me on to Emi's work earlier this year, and I'm really pleased that we're able to expose her work to a wider audience. This is just the beginning for an extremely talented young cartoonist!"

In EMITOWN, Lenox brings you into her world with superb cartooning, a brilliant cast of characters, and an innocent perspective often left on the cutting room floor of other diary comics. With a broad range of styles, every day is an adventure, from a morning breakfast burrito to metaphoric tales of superheroes and battlefields of love. Emi proves that life is never dull in her first annual collection of EMITOWN!

EMITOWN, a 400-page two-color graphic novel for $19.99, will be available on October 27, 2010.

Lindsay Lohan reported to court yesterday, about 10 minutes late, to begin her jail sentence, which officers say will be about 12 days, due to jail overcrowding and expected good behavior. Crowds surrounded Lohan as she walked in and a helicopter followed the car that took her to the jail. She was booked at 10:11am.

Once she is released from jail, Lindsay Lohan has 24 hours to begin rehab. Sources say she is still receiving her prescription medicine, including Adderall and Ambien.

Creator, Eric Kripke, Stepping-Down from Supernatural

Series creator, Eric Kripke, says "the timing was right" to leave Supernatural, as it reached the end of its five-year storyline. Kripke says he felt the time was right to "take a step back and focus on new projects." Executive producer, Sera Gamble, is set to take the reins. Gamble has been with Supernatural for several years. Kripke will stay on in an advisory role.

Kripke also said he would definitely be writing at least one episode this season and has been present for the pitches of all the other episodes in Supernatural's sixth season, so far.

Level-Up with Gold Coins

Investing is not easy, and most people leave it to the professionals, but keeping all your money in the bank does you little good. No matter what you want to do with your life or finances -- what you are saving your money for or plan on doing with it -- the money you set aside could be making you more. Stocks generally require more aggressive management, while stocks and bonds keep your money tied-up for long periods of time. Most people are looking for something between the two, and collectibles such as comic books and baseball cards fit that bill for many. However, you could also buy gold coins.

If you are new to the game, the US Gold Bureau's trained representatives are more than happy to help. Gold is considered a "safe" investment, but there is no such thing as a completely safe investment. Still, you are unlikely to lose money on gold ingots or coins.

Baskin-Robbins 26 Flavors

You might know Baskin-Robbins as 31 Flavors; the names are interchangeable because the company was founded as Baskin-Robbins 31 Ice Cream. However, Baskin-Robbins has far more than 31 flavors -- thousands, in fact -- and has decided to drop five from its roster to make room for even more. While this is nothing new, the international ice cream giant's decision to drop their classic French Vanilla has drawn the ire of many customers.

French Vanilla is one of the original 31 flavors and has been with the company since 1945. Also getting the axe: Caramel Praline Cheesecake (1970), Campfire S'mores (1975), Apple Pie a La Mode (1976), and Superfudge Truffle (2007). The flavors replacing these have yet to be announced, but will premiere this fall.

2010 marks the 65th anniversary of Baskin-Robbins. July is National Ice Cream month.

Pink Floyd Together Again

Pink Floyd fans in Oxfordshire last weekend got their money's worth when David Gilmour joined Roger Waters onstage to perform several Pink Floyd songs. It was the first time in five years that the two had played together in public, but it gets better: Some sources are saying the two will reunite for Waters' upcoming tour! Gilmour himself discusses Pink Floyd goings-on on his Facebook blog.

Gilmour and Waters have had their interpersonal problems over the years, but the classic lineup reunited back in 2005 for a charity event. Richard Wright, the keyboardist, died in 2008, prompting former members to say there would never be another reunion, as Wight was irreplaceable.

Pink Floyd's North American tour starts later this year.

FCC Says America 'Anti-Family'

Six years after first imposed, and millions and millions of dollars later, an appeals court has stricken down a proposed FCC regulation making obscenity on TV punishable by insanely high fines. The appeals court said the proposed law was "unconstitutional," prompting an FCC spokesperson to call America "anti-family."

Massachusetts Just Got Hella Dumberer

Massachusetts, the state of retaads what thought an Adult Swim advertisement was a bomb and extorted money from Cartoon Network, has now defied the First Amendment of the Constitution by declaring the Web, comic books, and all artwork (including statues) pornographic in nature and aimed at children. Though the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and ACLU have both challenged the new law, which is Constitutionally nullified from Jumpstreet, Massachusetts officials intend to uphold the law vigorously across the entirety of the Internet.

RIP American Splendor's Harvey Pekar

Harvey Pekar, creator of the notorious, autobiographical comic book, American Splendor, died in his home Monday morning. Police were called to the house by his wife around 1am and found the artist and writer dead in his bed.

Pekar's work, first published in 1976, gained an underground following which catapulted him to fame in Comicdom and resulted in a handful of appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, but Pekar's depression and combative temperament did not mesh well with Letterman's sometimes confrontational interview style and though it boosted sales of American Splendor and helped propel his fame, Pekar famously walked-off/was asked to leave the show.

In 2003, the movie, American Splendor, was released to rave reviews, prompting Pekar to write his autobiography and even start a website where he, his wife, and their adopted daughter all had blogs, but each only made one entry.

Harvey Pekar was 70 years old and suffered from prostate cancer.

Comics Day

Sorry for the late start and all, but it's Comics Day here to The Weirding Central, and I've still got boxes from the last two shipments setting around the living room/Weirding Central, so I'm knee-deep in Scotch tape and baggies, and haven't even started filing.

I know Ernie will be glad to hear fresh updates on my medical condition (ha!), but I wrenched something in my back the other day at physical therapy, and though lifting things doesn't seem to bother it much, walking does, so I have to come up with a gameplan for getting them all downstairs... one at a time seems a bit drastic, and the tape won't stay stuck to the dog, so... I may hire someone.

Atlanta Artist Increases Value of X-Men #1

ROI on X-Men #1Atlanta-based contemporary artist, xenonouveau, finally found a use for 1991's X-Men #1: He cut it up painstakingly -- piece by piece, frame by frame -- and glued it all over a toilet, which he is selling on eBay as a piece (not a working model). This is what is known as "ROI."

X-Men #1, by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, was the first part to Claremont's original end to his X-Men oeuvre, though he has since returned to the series a handful of times and is now writing the Forever series in the X-Men line. It also marked the beginning of the end of Jim Lee's work at the company, as he would soon leave to found Image. Though it was the best-selling comic book of all-time, largely because there were some eleventeen variants, it marked no major turning-point in the team, but it did kill the franchise pretty solidly for about 10 years. It also helped kill the industry for about 15 years.

Marvel just released twelveteen variants for the latest X-Men #1 launch, ominously entitled... X-Men.

Mel Gibson Investigated for Domestic Abuse

We decided to stand-off of this one because... well, it's Mel Gibson: Mel Gibson hasn't been newsworthy to nerds for about 15-25 years now. But it appears that Gibson's tape-recorded threats, and apparent admission of guilt on said taped evidence, has forced police to open an investigation on grounds of domestic abuse. That is all police are saying for now, but some outlets are reporting that Gibson's "camp" is expected to address the matter later today. The recorded messages also include some racially incendiary comments by Gibson.

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva were formerly involved and have a nine-month-old baby together, who is the center of an ugly, and increasingly public, custody battle. Both parties have restraining orders against the other. Gibson was recently cast in Jodie Foster's comedy, The Beaver, scheduled to open later this year.

Back to the Old

That new Blogger editor is just too funky. We apologize for the interruption, but it was a gamble to play with it, and a pretty quick decision to go back to the old one (for now, anyway), and it all took some moments to finalize and so forth.

Also still making those technical and design changes, which you should start seeing in small doses throughout the summer. Thanks again for your patience, and always remember that when we're not actively posting, we have years' worth of posts in the archives which can be found in the sidebar, or by tag!

Don't forget to leave your comments, too!

On Chasing Amy

Apparently, liking Kevin Smith is now... out, or over (given the topic). It's not news to me, as even Smith and his View Askew monkeys revel in their 90's iconography, and have settled on making the Web their home. But while I enjoy the podcasts, I freely admit to enjoying Kevin Smith's older films. Jay and Silent Bob still make me laugh, even if I do so now with an eyeroll -- although Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back does not make me laugh, nor did it ever; Clerks remains one of my favorite films, though not "top ten" favorites, and Clerks 2 is far better than anyone is giving it credit for being (yet -- trust me); and I've watched Mallrats four or five times since it's been streaming. So it was that I went to Cinematical Movie Club to read some chick's review of Chasing Amy and figured out why no one likes Kevin Smith now:

He's a guilty pleasure many feel more comfortable dismissing as part of their errant youth, or the 1990s, in general. Recognizing Kevin Smith's cool as part of a bygone era is one of the steps to becoming an adult, I guess. Well, that and it's still the Wild, Wide Web in which anyone can become Somebody, if they just dream, and Kevin Smith is a threat to many in that regard. But that isn't what this post's about.

In her retro-review, this aging hipster says, as imperfectly as her grammar allows, "...consider Kevin Smith's audience. If not written by Smith and featuring the faces of View Askew, how many of them would have forked over the cash to see a film frankly discussing homosexuality, race, and tolerance?"

I find that derogatory to the point of incitement, but I can't really tell if the writer (is it writress?) meant it as such, or if she's just as clueless as her Engrish teacher most certainly were. Regardless, she does a decent job of pointing-out how sexually immature the 1990's male was, but she's a girl. Besides, her good points would fall flat even if she hadn't lead with such a ridiculous notion, so allow me to provide the real story of sexuality, both male and female, in the 1990s:

Comic books sucked, because all the good artists left Marvel only to learn they didn't know shit about business; movies sucked because Hollywood had developed a solid formula for every genre, brand, star, and idea, and refused to waver from it; and music sucked because some moron shot himself, so everyone on the radio was whining about that, while everyone else was raving til dawn because they might as well shoot themselves -- because life sucked, art sucked, and everything was just a big waste of time, anyway. "Whatever" was the catch-phrase, with the inflection on the first e -- as in, "Whatever!"

"That guy who sings that song about teen angst shot himself!"

"Whatever. I don't even know what that is."

Eventually, it became "Whatev," because life was that short! Kentucky Fried Chicken became KFC and everyone was like, "Whatev." But I digress...

It all most certainly was immature, but everything was -- on every level, and by everyone -- and being gay was nowhere near as "normal," nor as complacent, as even the famously ribald Chasing Amy makes it seem. There was still a lot of prejudice toward homosexuality, but it was primarily aimed at gay men. Gay girls got a pass because it was hot. They kissed on TV and everyone tuned-in. "Whatev! Of course I watched it! What are you, gay?" Sexuality became the de facto way to rebel -- against your parents, against your social set, against society in general -- it's what made porn mainstream (well, that and the VCR). Before the 1990s, people who worked in porn were not bodybuilders and models. But being gay remained something most young people were flirting with well after the WWW made pornography a big whatev, because it was dangerous.

The '90s were a time of extremes and you didn't just do something -- you had to commit to it or you were a "poser" -- and after death metal, the Information Superhighway, gangsta rap, and Faces of Death, there wasn't a whole lot of extreme ground left to cover. But for as deadly as the Compton streets were, extreme sex and sexuality was not for posers; it was the time of AIDS, and all other STDs and sexually-related everything fell, not just to the wayside, but completely off the map.

Being gay wasn't just about flaunting your sexuality or sexual identity, nor about becoming an adult capable of making your own (bad, usually) decisions: It was about daring to be gay with AIDS. It was one way anyone could dare the world and face the worst, even if only in their own minds -- or that of their friends' and family's. This all resulted in a, hopefully, short-lived phenomenon called "bug-chasing." I'll let you look that one up for yourselves.

We can argue political climate, failing educational systems, and bullshit ourselves, but at the heart of it, we were a generation raised to believe we could be anything we wanted to be, if we just dared to dream.

Only to find out we could not.

So? So what!? Whatev! Sexuality became the one way to stand-out, to stand-apart -- you know, without having any discernible skills, talents, or ambition -- and being gay was just as much of a suburban 90's fad as those damn Beanie Babies. Take it from me; I run a blog on pop-culture!

I also happen to have been there (got the T-shirt -- yep, '90s), and I'm a decent critic, and Chasing Amy may have meant whatever that chick says to her, but it wasn't really about those things:

It was a frank discussion about what I've just told you, by way of those things; Chasing Amy was not about a lesbian finding love with a man, it was about a young girl who was confused by her own sexuality, and even more confused by her sexual identity. After all, how could she be a lesbian without all her lesbian friends; if no one recognized her as a lesbian, then who -- or what -- was she, exactly? And why, or to whom, did it matter? And did she still matter if her sexuality didn't?

That's what most of the 1990s was, part and parcel: A generation of young adults who learned that just really wanting to be winners wasn't enough, no matter how much they really wanted it. So we had to learn to be ourselves. The hardest lesson was learning that we couldn't just be astronauts or supermodels, but the biggest part of that lesson was learning that one drug-addict's suicide didn't define us artistically anymore than whom we slept with did socially (or sexually, when you get right down to it), and Chasing Amy was about that.

Cynics will say the 1990s were about "learning to settle," and maybe they were for some, but they were also about learning to let go of everything we'd been taught -- not what we'd been promised, so much as what we'd been told to expect -- what we had been told we could achieve without having the proper skills set, talent, drive, or money (mainly money). And politics, failing social and educational systems, and all manner of other factors most certainly did play into it, but defining what words like "sexuality" and "sexual identity" mean was what most people took from the 1990s -- not because of Anita Hill or Bill Clinton (though those were the headline acts), but because our sexuality was one of the few things we could control, despite lacking the money or ambition needed to develop a skills set.

Unfortunately, it became the thing by which far too many defined themselves; sexual identity soon took on too much weight, too much "meaning," and entire ideologies and social strata were developed around them, with damaging consequences. (Did you look-up "bug-chasing" yet?)

SPOILERS

Chasing Amy is not at all about a lesbian who finds True Love with a guy, then settles for a less compatible (but equally gay) mate; it's about the sexual journey of one girl. Plain and simple. That it ends the way it does is a fitting way of saying that said girl had not, at that point in her life, come to the end of that journey. Alyssa's failure wasn't that she'd found True Love with a man, nor even that she'd let it slip through her... fists; her failure was that she'd allowed her sexuality to become the thing which defined her -- the one and only thing. Her comic book was about gay love, all of her friends were gay, she sang and hung-out in gay bars, and she became a gay icon to her gay fans.

Except that Alyssa wasn't as gay as she was Alyssa, and she lost sight of that.

That Holden and Alyssa's relationship defined the people around them just as those people defined Alyssa and Holden's relationship and, in the end, all of the characters were changed because of it, is a story and structure thing, not a philosophical one. That no one took any drugs was most likely a studio thing, because everyone took drugs in the '90s.

How do you think the whole sex thing got started? Rebellion!? Whatev! How immature.

Florida Mom Says Son 'Lost His Mind' Over Manga

A Floridian mother who claims her child is now in "extensive therapy" after stealing an adult version of a popular manga from the Crestview Public Library stands accused of misleading other parents into signing a petition to have manga removed from the library.

Margaret Barbaree, founder of Protect Our Children, approached other parents and adults at a local Christmas parade and asked them to sign a petition to have pornography removed from the Crestview Public Library. Upon receiving 225 signatures (plus her own), Ms. Barbaree attempted to extort the community into removing manga, which she incorrectly referred to as anime (Japanese animation) in the document. Her deception was brought into question by one of the local librarians.

The Crestview, Florida City Council President, Charles Baugh, Jr., visited the Crestview Public Library the day of the council meeting at which Ms. Barbaree gave her presentation, and assured all present that the manga in question was available only in the adult section, and that "safeguards" are in place to prevent minors from accessing it.

Ms. Barbaree says her son is now in a home, where he is receiving extensive therapy.
