Some Quick Technical Notes

We've got a good Rundown in the truest sense of the word (like the old-fashioned ones - we did one a few days back) coming up later today, but I wanted to take a moment to draw your attention to a few things:

You may have noticed the growing list o' widgets in the sidebar. These are not sponsors; these are generally directories and search engines in which The Rundown appears. Though many of them ask for a "reciprocal" link, we like showing them off. If you really enjoy reading blogs, you should take a moment to check some of them out; unlike regular search engines like Google, these engines focus solely on blogs and news sites but otherwise work as usual. We're hoping the additional exposure results in some more activity and discussion, but we'll still be posting whether it does or not. There's like... there's nothing else to do around here.

I still have not figured out what is causing the funky formatting on some posts. I thought it had to do with some of the inline text formatting (HTML coding), but I'm still not certain; it seems to strike pretty randomly, spacing some paragraphs out while condensing others. As some of you who follow the other blogs in our little homemade "network" or "ring" here already know, I am shopping for a new computer (or components for building one) this weekend. Once the new system and all the software and etc. is in place and working correctly, the site - including all the blogs - will undergo a major facelift with the release of the Spring/Summer "double-sized issue." I hope this solves the formatting problems, but I can't make any promises.

Also, some people have complained that, since I switched to the new Blogger Templates, the "Older Posts" link at the bottom isn't working. I'm having the same problem and have to assume it's a Blogger issue. I have found that, if you click on it several times, it will eventually "take," but the page it surfs to refreshes several times before finally loading and being navigable. I'm currently using FireFox 2.0.0.3 under Win98 and I have received this same complaint from people on all sorts of browsers and OS (I also get this error under IE 6.x under 98), so I'm placing a ticket today to make Blogger aware of it.

Finally, if you look to the very bottom of the widgets list in the sidebar, you'll see a button for the RocketInfo Reader. This is an RSS Reader which does not require a download and will automatically load The Rundown when you first login. All you need do is sign up for an account and sign in to the Reader to use it. You can add any other channels, sites, and blogs that have RSS feeds (all Blogger/BlogSpot blogs, most others). This is one of the simplest RSS Readers I've come across and it just also happens to be one of the cleanest and nicest!

If you've put off getting into RSS because you just didn't know what it was or weren't sure what it's all about, it basically allows you to keep up with the blogs, newsfeeds, and sites you enjoy within one reader program. As new posts, articles, and updates are made, they automatically appear as new "threads" in your reader - if you use FireFox, it's basically the same as using Live Bookmarks (I think IE 7.0 also supports these now, as well). Still, a free-standing reader keeps you better organized and uncluttered.

Bloglines is another RSS service you can find in the widgets to the right.

If you have any other questions, comments, or problems regarding presentation, formatting, or any technical issues, feel free to Comment to this post. And, as always, thanks for reading and tell your friends!
